^^ You must lack stimulation in your life if you're pumped up over a new train ticket :p ;)

It quotes $410 for a yearly Victorian Student Pass, allowing unlimited travel on all trains, trams and buses operating wholly within Victoria. It is $9 for the concession card.

I assume the Student Pass turns out to be a lot cheaper than paying a daily travel fare every day of the year for most, even on concession prices.

Right, cheers for that! Both options sem reasonable (although I still wonder why jobseekers get free concession and students don't, but eff it 9 bucks isn't much).

I won't be. I will only scan it if it is needed to be scanned.
Isn't the price of trip dependent on where you scan on and off?

If so, I wouldn't scan on without doing the same when disembarking.

I do not support this piece of shit system at all. $1.3b is a load of shit.

EDIT: If this is going to be the only ticket system, what happens to people that don't live here/don't have a Myki card?

How is it going to work scanning on at the G after a game of cricket or footy?

apparently (re the neil mitchell interview with kerr-walsh about a month ago), at richmond, EVERYONE will have to scan on, scan off, no matter what. i'm pretty sure that's the case (hopefully i didn't hear it right and discretion will be used by staff at richmond/jolimont). if so, 90,000 at Anzac Day or pies-blues-ess-rich and there will be chaos.

All it will take is one blockbuster game to bring this system down. Just one.

exactly. it's just asking for everyone to experience problems. the public, the operator, the government. they'd gain more respect if they wrote it off now, imo.

and just imagine after a close game, a packed crowd, a night match, and tension already in the air. add dodgy myki gates into the mix and we have a big talking point for the week ahead.

It'll be just as bad after a game at the Dome.

With a lot of stadiums, it's already bad enough trying to get tens of thousands of people through a dozen validators when they don't have to validate. There will be mayhem when the same amount of people will have to touch onto the system (and in some cases, try 3-4 times).

Got my card in the mail today. Only jumped at ordering it because they threatened you would have to pay for one later.

I can see some benefit going on here - you can buy trip credit online. No more buying tickets ever is epic convenience. They need to get this shit in all forms of transport working asap especially buses.

if the world wasn't full of idiots, we wouldn't need a bloody myki card.

in 2010, why do we not have a simple smart card that you can transfer money to and use for public transport, parking meters, vending machines, coffee shops, etc etc?

Well because if that card is stolen/lost some dude is going to rob you blind while drinking coffee and parking his car at the train station in order to use your card to leave the state and you'd be paying for it.

Of course you could put a PIN number on this super card, but every single card scanner for all these applications would be a target for skimming crooks.

Got mine yesterday and used it for the first time this morning.

Worked on the second scan at my station. But when got off at Parliament I tried 6 different exits and it didn't work on any of them after 15 tries all up. The Metro guy just laughed and said it's happenning all the time and waved me through.

Will be interesting to see if I get overcharged as I never scanned off.

You have to ring Myki and tell them you got off at Parliament, so they can make note of your card not scanning off and not overcharge you.

Pain in the arse, yes.

How would they know though?

"I hope you're telling me the truth of where you disembarked. Can you give me a description of your person so that we can match you to the security cameras at the station or those operators working during the listed time so that we can see you there please. Otherwise you're so getting overcharged you fare evader you!"

Honesty on the rails, you'd think fare evasion is a thing of the past simply because you have a card now instead of a ticket.

Then of course you have general wear and tear of any "strip" on the card itself if poorly manufactured (and currently since they're screwing up names, card types and amount to send to people chances are high they'll screw up most things associated with the cards physically) I do not get why we moved from a system of;

Buy ticket type
Validate ticket
Use public transport

to

Sign up for card (Is the card the correct type?)
Does the card have enough money on / attached to it?
Swipe card
Use transport
Swipe card

Why choose to purposely complicate a system for the sake of a goddamn card?

And on V/Line, I would be utterly godsmacked if all rural stations had readers that were properly maintained 24/7, mainly because they can't even maintain proper boom gates and they're going to maintain the integrity of a billion $ system in the same places?

Pull the other one.

There should also be a system where all receipts go on a card.

You would never have to worry about losing a receipt again.

My manager and I were talking about something like this last week. It would make taxation a lot easier, but some people could have privacy concerns. You purchase a good or service, it uploads to your online profile.

Will be interesting to see if I get overcharged as I never scanned off.

I was about to say check your balance online, and then I saw:

I used mine today. Worked fine. My only problem is I can't see my balance, or top up, on the website. It keeps saying "This function is currently unavailable".

Same thing happended again this morning.

Scanned on fine, with a charge of about $4.90 from what should have been a 2-hour charge yesterday, but again didn't work when I tried to scan off.

Called up, was on and off hold for 26mins. First the guy told me my card had no balance so I couldn't be using it. Then he said my card wasn't registered (WTF he meant I have no idea), then he couldn't view my travel history, and finally told me to call back early next week. I asked him why he can't just put a note in the system saying I was overcharged yesterday and am sure to be today as well but he honestly had no idea what he was doing.

What a debacle!!

I think i read there will still be machines at stations where you can buy day passes but i'd say it would be at an inflated price or something.

Still have that problem when i try and log into my Eastlink account sometimes. That thing's only been up and running for about 18 months at least. ;)
