Has anyone thought about picking this bloke up? Has dominated VFL as a late bloomer, and have been seeing some rumors that Geelong might have a crack.

The kid is only 21 so isn't going to increase our average player age. Has excelled in the past few seasons winning a JJ Liston Trophey in 2009, beating out the likes of Barlow and Pods (2 of the best mature age trades for a long time).

He is primarily an in-and-under player with excellent hands which makes him a great fit for a team that wants a ready-made centre-square player for next year.
He has good height (185cm), but he’ll need to put a little more weight on (roughly 79kgs) to play his in his most effective role as an in-and-under midfielder though, but a pre season with an AFL club will help.

Im assuming GC will have a look, but should Geelong?

Wells has already stated they are looking for quick running mids with good foot skills. So i'd say no!!!

Ive seen a couple of Sewell's games, he is no Varcoe, but he has got a descent sprint on him and his foot skills are very good. He has played as an in and under Midfielder but could quite easily fill our need for an outside mid. I think he is exactly what we need.

Not sure how to respond to that, have you seen him play, the kid is a gun. He is tough and can be groomed to play most mid field positions. He is quick enough to play out side, but tough enough for an inside role as well. He has good hieght for a mid but need to put a few kilos on, which can be done easily with a full pre season.

Sorry MM, I was punning on your descent word, I know you mean decent, just my strict spelling upbringing, so it's deleted. Not funny at all.

If he is so good why did no one pick him up last year after his Liston? Not even as a rookie?

Calling Jpod anyone....

I have not seen enough of him to make a comment but if I was him I'd try to get a gig for our VFL side. We have a history of list players from our VFL side once we have seen them up close. The one thing I like at about all these guys who have done it hard. They all are very grateful for their chance and if he didn't make it probably wont be because he has Motlopitis

I'm not saying he isn't good enough, I am genuinely wondering why he has been overlooked multiple times.

Because club recruiters have no clue. If Fremantle had not picked up Barlow last year he would never have played AFL football. Even Fremantle didn't pick him up in the actual draft.

The AFL has an unhealthy obsession with children, something the American sports don't have. You practically need a Uni degree and be ready to play in Round 1 before you'll get looked for the NBA.

Given that Pods has worked out well and Sewell is only 21, why not take a punt.

Cant be any worse than a draft pick in the 100 range can he.. and if he won Liston Medal...surely he's got some talent.....

I think its a combination of issues.
One is pack mentality. I heard some comments thru the season when in debate over Barlow etc . The line of thought was "if he hasn't been picked by someone else now then there must be something wrong with him"
Another is opportunity cost. In days of old when there were no list limits , the like of Pods, Barlow and perhaps Sewell would have got an invite then played themselves into the side. Now with limited spots , everyone of these guys on your list is another kid you can't have , its another year you are behind if he fails , so the norm becomes going for fresh kids. Pick a kid and if doesn't pan out. Thats the way it goes. Pick a 23+ and its a scrub , you risk looking incompetent. Look at Voss now , he looks like an idiot for trying something out of sync but I suspect in the next 5 years his approach ( not execution) may well become far more normal. The advent of FA will change things again.

Now maybe he's not up to it.Maybe he is too short, too slow, poor dispossal etc. But he has been playing against and beating the kids that are getting picked up , just as Barlow was.Pods only get his chance due to a change in the Rookie rules. Imagine a rule like "any club can have 5 guys over 22 that have never been on lists outside of your normal list".You still get your kids and give late bloomers a chance. I suspect him and several other would get their chance.

being from sa i have never seen him play, but from what ive heard on here and with him winning the liston at a pretty young age i cant see any way the gold coast wont pre list him. at worst he'll play some games over the next couple of years just while the kids they get this year develop, at best he turns out to be the next barlow.

id be surprised if he makes it to the draft, but if he does i'd say someone will at least give him a shot with the success of the mature rookies last year

He's a good player and worth looking at with our last pick or in the rookie draft.

I would be interested to know whether he's one of the players GC have pre listed, since they've pre listed a few state competition players.

Sewell will probably be taken by GWS at the start of the rookie draft if he doesn't go late in the ND.

Greater Western Sydney assistant coach Alan McConnell said the club has plans to recruit ''a few'' mature-age recruits in this year's rookie draft in which it is likely to snare some VFL talent.

Port Melbourne midfielder and ex-Demon Shane Valenti and North Ballarat midfielder Myles Sewell head the wish-list for the newcomers, who begin pre-season training on November 15.

Sounds like he's got the attributes of a good tagger. If we can snare him, i wouldn't mind.:thumbsu:

haha fair enough, didn't click to what you were talking about, it went straight over my head. I'll try to watch my spelling next time to avoid these situations.

That comment could apply to Michael Barlow, too. He didn't get picked up in the National Draft but that doesn't mean he couldn't play. It just means that the AFL club recruiters all got it wrong.

I would give Myles a go as he has shown he can play the game also another player would be Ian Callinan from central districts, that way allows the kids breathing space and not so much pressure to perform.

Yeah I have heard some really good things about him, GC were sniffing around earlier in the year according to Central Districts FC. He also did some pre-seasons with North and Richmond in 08' and 09' but apparently had a few body and fitness issues, which have now been resolved. He was one of the favourites for the Margery Medal for the bulk of the year as well. All reports seem to be adament he would make it at AFL level.

I think Callinan is in his late 20's though now isn't he?

I would certainly look at Sewell though.

Yeah I think he is about 27, but who knows, we took Pods to fill a position so maybe we could take him as well. Highly doubtful, but who knows. Much more of an upside to Sewell though.
