"I think Shannon Hurn was a bit upset watching Trent launch those 80m bombs. He'll probably work on it at training!" @andrewgaff03

Brilliant "*May not have actually happened" moment included in there.

Yeah I didn't think Shannon Hurn would be all that upset about McKenzies long bomb either

My thoughts on the game

What I liked:

-Gaff, picked up exactly where he left off from an all Australian year. Ran hard, looked dangerous, set for another big year ahead
-Jackson Nelson: Someone has lit a fire under this kid, plays like he is desperate for a round 1 spot, worked hard
-The Gov: If Eric Mackenzie is healthy this year, Gov would be my pick for starting center half forward. Always looked dangerous and his marking is superb. Darling ought to be a little nervous (I will get to him shortly)
-LeCras: Just pure silk
-Jetta looked good this week until he got injured

What I didn't like:

-Lycett: Just no real impact around the ground. This kid has talent and the club keeps giving him opportunities to cement his spot but he keeps wasting them. I would give him a chance again in our final NAB cap game but if the status quo remains the same then Giles would be getting my nod for back up ruckman to Nic Nat
-Darling: After his stinking finals series that culminated in that putrid grand final effort I kind of expected he would come out with a point to prove. Instead, what should have been his first possession was a dropped chest mark inside 50m. Welcome back Jack. No urgency, no real impact. Gov to me look the far more dangerous of the pair in the forward line, maybe worth considering moving Jack across to the half forward flank?
-Duggan continues to do very little during the NAB challenge games and isn't exactly pressing his claim for a round 1 start.
-Karpanny: Someone must really, really like this kid for him to have remained on our list.

The boys will undoubtedly be better for the run, looking for to more midfield and defensive cohesion in our final NAB cup game to come

Gov should play CHF. JK full forward, Darling third tall. He's too small to play CHF, and has struggled on the better defenders. Giving JD the 3rd best defender from the opposition, will give him the chance to have the impact he had in his early years, when we still had Lynch playing CHF. Darling is not a mid option, and he shouldn't be a CHF either.

I would love for us to emulate the hawks 2012 forward setup

Franklin > Kennedy
Roughead > McGovern
Gunston > darling
Bruest > Lecras
Cyril > ?????? Hill ???
Puopolo > cripps
Hale > lycett

Darling third tall not including resting ruck .
We don't have a talented small forward like Cyril . Makes me wonder if we should have chased Jeff garlett a couple of years ago .
I suppose you can't fault hills last season

Good list, agree on all counts. Although I think Duggan has been doing his best to get involved and it's worth keeping in mind that he did miss quite a bit of time. Think he needs to get better at reading the play and positioning himself at the stoppages but that will come with time.

Possibly Bennell as our Cyril. Obviously nowhere near the same talent, but playing forward is probably his only chance of not being delisted by seasons end. He has been overtaken by others in defence

No they weren't

WBD under Eade:

2008 - 2nd highest scoring team
2009 - Highest scoring team
2010 - 3rd highest scoring team

3 consecutive prelims. They were ****ing electric to watch.

You are wrong :)

Lecras is better than Breust and to even compare Darling to Gunston is an insult to the Hawks. Darling is a poor mans Chris Mayne with some acrobatic tricks, very disappointed with him and how he just hasn't stepped up.

Not sure we stack up against that line up but against the current Hawks forwards we stack up ok:
Gunston - Kennedy
Roughead - McGovern (still think he is more valuable at CHB this year though)
Shiels - Darling
Breust - LeCras
Puopolo - Cripps
Rioli - Jetta
Unfortunately I think we'd still be a bit behind overall but not outrageously.

Pretty harsh on Darling. He lost the entire pre season and first half of last year to serious stress fractures in his foot. His fitness and form dropped off as the year rolled on, which was to be expected.

His first few years were awesome for a young key position player, albeit playing as the third tall. When Lynch left, Darling struggled to play the true CHF, or second tall forward role. He is slightly undersized for that role, and got beaten by the 1st or 2nd best defender from the opposition. Even so, in 2012 he performed prretty well when it was just him and Lynch, after JK missed almost the whole season.

He still kicked 20+ goals in 2015 from about 12 games, not a bad return for a bloke who had no pre season, or fitness base due to missing the first half of the year.

If he can play almost the entire year as the 3rd tall, taking the 3rd best defender, he will have a big year.

If it makes you feel any better, just pretend he misspelled "Tom Lamb" when he wrote "Darling". Then the analogy should work perfectly for you as well.

That first game he come back for last year after missing the preseason he was sensational, just went missing after that. Time for him to not be an auto pick I think, give his spot to the Gov.

Both should play. Gov at CHF, JK FF, JD 3rd tall/flank

I am not worried at all about results from the preseason. We aren't trying to win games, we are playing players to a set rotation/position/fitness goal. This is what good teams use the preseason for. Bad teams try and win games to build excitement/sell memberships. We don't need to do that, we'll come out firing round 1.

The way Gaff played the GF showed how much he loves the club. It was him and shep that played with heart on their sleeves that day. cant believe how much hate this kid got. I have a feeling Darling will turn around like Gaff did and all the haters will have eat some humble pie.

Needs to be in the side, Can play as the third tall (I would prefer)

Last year was a tough one but limited pre season and still has a few chances in my book.

Not even 24 yet, has played over 100 games and by the end of the year will be a top 10 goal kicker in the history of our football club. He was poor yesterday and in the GF so has plenty of things to improve on but give him more than one NAB game before you write him off for the year

I like Bennell as that small forward option. He has looked really good in patches so far in this NAB series IMO, obviously fading in and out of games but i think he will be very close come round 1
