Just a thread to give thought on todays game.

Midfield was sensational, looked quick composed and very disciplined.

Schammer was great in his new role.
Crowley and Dodd tough and hard at the ball and man.
Lukey and co working well up forward.
Peake and Walkers pace good to watch and very creative.
Schofield looks suprisingly good.

On the downside, I thought Warren was too slow for AFL footy in his first hit out. Johnson was a bit iffy too. Not enough game time for a few guys like Gilly and Haines.

I liked seeing McPharlin float around half forward though! I'd actually prefer him and Pav to swap, play Pav closer to the goal square and McPharlin roaming around half forward. It's a more natural game for the 2 of them I think. I'll be bashed for this comment though! :)

Spot on!!

Medhurst was a highlight for mine.

Was impressed to see crowley and peake pick up from where they left off last season, to be honest I wouldn't have been surprised to see them drop off around the fringes of the team but I think they both deserve their spots.

I think we still lack the bursts of speed that west coast has but was well impressed by the way our ball movement lead to open runs.

The positives no doubt were Sandilands in the ruck and Haselby and J.Carr in the centre. Some of the handpasses from these 2 were amazing.

Also it was good to see all the backline huddle around Harvey very quickly when he came into the huddle.

Having only just seen the highlights on afl.com (as i'm currently sitting at a computer in a helsinki hotel) the thing that seems the most encouraging are the great individual performances. Ive always tried not to read too much into the pre-season (which has been a necessity given our woeful pre-season record), but its always encouraging to hear of good individual displays, especially by guys that have talent but havent lived up to it yet, i.e Medhurst and McPharlin - the latter mainly due to injury.

But I reckon we shouldnt underrate winning the cup - it would probably do more benefit to our club than any other. Shame I cant be there next week either, but I have my tickets to round 1 in Launceston. :D

I wouldn't mind winning the NAB cup, give our boys confidence to run into the season.

That said, I wouldn't mind losing the NAB cup, get to play more relaxed "regional series" games.

Winning the cup would keep the WAFC off our back for a while with some funds in our bank account. 1 game at a time though!

Centrebet has Freo second fav to win the NAb cup after last nights performance..

well the forecast is for another stinker - based on prevoius years collingwood are likely to go into meltdown

2 much time on my hands....

Bell - superb running, seemed to be loose man in defence alot of the time, & drifted down forward to bag 2 goals
Black - DNP, calf strain, likely to play this week
Browne- DNP, injured (still!!!!!!!)
Campbell - DNP, still along way away in pecking order
J Carr - Great running game, looked as good as he did in last years pre-season, did ankle late in game, but shld be right for Pies
M Carr - Superb game, looks a bit lighter, supremely fit
Cook - DNP, not selected, signs not good
Copping - DNP, no chance at the mo
Crowley - Superb game, supremely fit, 190cm, great height for midfield, one to watch this year, slowly becoming my 2nd fave to sobber
Dodd - Good game, spent 1/2 on the bench, but was an angry young man when playing
Drum - DNP, a chance this week
Dunn - DNP, again a chance this week, apparently alot fitter & stronger than last year, lost kg's
The Wiz - Brilliant & stupid in the 1 game, typical Wiz game
Gilmore - Played CHF, led good, great precision kicking, played well, still circumspect in his tackling & commitment
Grover - Superb game, very fit & looks bigger in for a great year, marked everything that came his way
Haddrill - DNP, hammy, back for Round 1, probably with perth at this stage
Haines - Not much game time, & didn't get much of the footy, probably will make way this week
Hasleby - 29 possies, all superb, looks incredibly fit
Hayden - DNP, Slowly, slowly with Roger, may start pressing for game nearer Round 1
Headland - Again incredibly fit...played mostly midfield but got hurt, some sort of leg injury, not serious, 5050 this week
Ibbotson - DNP, will play all year with Woewodin
Mundy - Superb game at HBF, put on some weight, this guy will be an All Aust in next few years
Murphy - Incredibly stupid mohawk, with some sort of shaven puzzle on side of head, but has bulked up considerably. Played CHB on Pauline (Hansen), broke even, did some nice things, but more importantly was an angry young man
Johnson- Played FB on McDougall, & I think McDougall had 1 kick, a real chance to step on Haddrill's shoes & take over FB after that game, also did alot of the kick ins
Longmuir - Predominantly played in a FP, kicked 3 goals in typical lazy JLo fashion, bulked up a bit too
McManus - DNP, will struggle for a game this year
McPharlin - will push for ALl australian full Forward this year. kicked 6, missed 2 easy chances, also had a run at CHF in last quarter, very fit, could kick 80 this year if he stays healthy
Medders - What a difference 6 months makes, has lost 4kg, & also 2cm in height, x Connolly he is the fastest player on their list 7 the fittest in terms of beep test etc, looked a million dollard on a HFF, kicked 2 or 3, handed of 5 or 6 goals with his precision passing to all australian & the wiz, now wears modra's old number...or Dions old number 6...in 4 a big year
Parker - Typical game, quite achiever, held Staker well
Pav - DNP, will play this week, wouldn't expect 2 much 2 soon from pav, will probably play in a pocket 1st up
Peake (SOB) - Superb...very fit, very fast, put on some kg's of muscle, in for a big year, played off a wing mainly, gr8 game
Polak - DNP, late withdrawal, should play this week, but where?
211 - 125kg's & counting, looks to have gained pace, kicked well, & finally he has been told when he is clear at a hit out to smash the ball 40 metres down the ground...THE KEY to freo's chances
Schammer - Superb, very fit, played BP/HBF, must have got almost 30 touches, was everywhere
Schofield - Probably his best game for Freo, came off the bench & every touch went to a player...still soft though
Thornton - DNP, has a groin strain, looking to Round 1
Walker - Played midfield/HFF, kicked 2 great goals, very fit, great kicking...looks the goodes
Warnock - DNP, 208cm, about 80kg's, has got alot of Double Whoppers with cheese to get thru
Warren - Spent some time in the ruck as relief, some time down back, some time up forward....was ok in the ruck, kinda Cam Mooney sort of size, has put on considerable bulk in arms over summer, was ok down back, didnt touch the ball in forward line
Webster - DNP, Might struggle for a game this year

Work off the ball was superb. Running, tackling - I enjoyed his game if not reflected in terms of possessions. reamed byt he umps - but taken with a cheeky glint in his eye I thought. Gave as good as he got but I thought this was a good sensible performance on the mentally-instability ratings!

Led to an argument(discussion) with a female docker friend of mine because she started going on about how he looks like a mad-man and she thinks he will explode and is a liability to the team. But I love him and rekon while he is a flawed genius, he is still a genius. The discussion turned into her saying she couldn't respect him as he bashed his missus, to which I said that a lot of men make mistakes and she took that as me condoning domestic violence, and me suggesting that she reads the west too much and if not for his skin colour he'd get a lot more respect as a fair but tough man of footy. Led me to recalling the tears forming in my eyes when he put that Torrie through against Sydney after having a very very rough patch with the media.

I couldn't agree with you any more, I love Jeff when he pulls on that purple jumper.
