He had very limited options in most cases.
re: astbury - i agree his only option was the kick down the line. it was so static it looked like under 14s. - i thought we played better football in the 2nd game. mixed it up a bit. overall i didn't mind astbury's game, and rance's for that matter and i'm not a huge fan of either. against the blues we got killed in the midfield. but I likerd the look of derycxz

I thought you guys looked good. you guys are a young side even when you play your guns so last night looked OK.

Point 1. It was a NAB practice game.

Ok, with that out of the way, I am interested in why people thought Astbury was so good. he seemd to drift around the backline without a man (maybe this is the new zone) and pick up cheap kicks. The few contests he was in, he was beaten more often than not.

In no way am I writing the kid off - I think he has a chance at a good future. I just wonder if some of you watching were judging him based on his stats rather than his actual work.

There is no such thing as a "cheap kick". Players getting what look like cheap kicks are often simply executing the innate ability to be in the right place and read the game.

Tidily racking up good stats is often criticised but poor players do not rack up decent stats.

Edwards had an absolute shocker
I think players such as him, Tuck and White seem to start slowly every season and come good by 1/3 or 1/2 way though the season. So I think they may have to play every preseason game to speed up their form. We would usually rest them for 2 or 3 preseason games.

Average games played for game 1: 33.4
Carltons average games played: 49.49

Average games played for game 2: 24.76
Pies average games played: 61

Kind of puts things into perspective doesn't it. Anyone who was expecting to see us emerge from last night with a win or 2 is seriously kidding themselves. We were always up against it. The only thing that should be taken out last night is that we didn't suffer any injuries and that we gave just about every kid a taste of what playing at AFL level is all about.

As far as last night goes I liked the look of: Batchelor Conca Contin Derickx Helbig Jakobi & MacDonald. I'm hoping we get as many games as possible into them this year.

...only saw the collingwood game and was pleased that we were competitive for most of the first half with such a young side...considering some of our supposedly more senior players that were playing were disappointing...

...whatever it was...structures...so many new players...or mental toughness...pies first hitout for the year....it did not all go collingwoods way in the first half...i think we caught them a tad of guard....i liked that we were competitive and didnt fold easily...

...liked the new recruits...all of them...:thumbsu:...

Still looks like we haven't worked out a kick in play other than Whitey playing on and either bombing long to a contest or being caught with the footy.

We didnt have any of of the players that should be kicking in, in the team so that was always going to be a shambles with White at the helm.

Nahas was embarrassing and white wasn't too far behind.

...harsh call on white...i thought white at least tried to generate some run and linkage for the team of the back line...at least he showed the others what had to be done to win the game..

...too often our players would stop and look for options rather than take on the opposition with run and carry...

...reckon white played better than nahas...

CALM down guys and girls .. last night's games had zero relevance for what lies ahead. We won't see a team like that take the field again in 2011 and they won't be playing under the same 'Mickey Mouse' rules as last night. Like that boundary line rule ... WTF?????
I will say this in regards to skills .... you will find that with Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, Newman, Foley and Riewolt back in the line-up, the skill level as a group will increase considerably!! It's a given that lesser lights will look an play better with better players around them.
That said, kudos to Mitch Morton -easily the best across both games last night!!!

Not sure if this will make sense ... but it wasn't just that he played awful ... it was the way he played awful .

I lost count of how many poor decisions he made ... let alone how slowly he made them .

was bloody diabolical last night

Diabolical is an understatement. It was as if he was colour blind and thought navy blue or black and white, were yellow and black. ;)

not sure if they had a vice captain out there last night but it could almost have been him ... and it was as if it completely mind-f..ked him to the point of complete meltdown

I have a confession to make

Put $1100 on Carlton to beat us tonight then rolled it into the Pies. Banked almost $1400. All going to RFC.

So, the night was OK in my mind.

Sorry, won't happen again

Are you serious? You bet it, you earned it !! Keep your powder dry for another day and back RFC when the time is right.

I agree, but I thought he would be playing midfield this season. A goal kicking mid-fielder surely.

Find hard to believe the amount of people having a crack at Webberly and Nasons games , how someone can make judgement on the amount of Footy they got and what they did with it in a side like that is amazing . There role within the side is predominately to receive the football off the inside mids and deliver deep to our key forwards . It's very likely that none of our regular inside mids played the game and nor did any of our key forwards ?
With grey lead in hand, I'd be tempted to put a line though a few that we all held hope for . White , Connors , Edwards and Nahas way to often loose complete momentum when trying sell the dummy and there disposal is shocking , we got rid of one offender of the same traits in Bling , these blokes I'm not sure can be saved either .
Contin also showed enough to suggest he is going to further pressurize Tucks spot within the side .

Interesting that you suggest that people shouldn't be having a crack and guys like Nason and Webberley because of the side they were playing in but then proceed to say that you're tempted to put a line through guys like Edwards Connors & Nahas based on their performances last night in the exact same side.

edwards was everywhere, needs to get his kicking up to scratch before round 1.

batchelor looked the goods, gives us the chance to rotate lids and newy through the middle.

conca showed his smarts, will be a good player for us when he is in the middle with cotch, dusty, foley and jackson.

X man showed some good signs, looking foward to seeing how he goes this season, looked a bit slow, but played well.

morton was good up foward, but i still want to see him play through the midfield.

astbury was pretty decent i thought, had to bomb it long as he had no options in front of him.

Maybe because of their roles within the side ?

I havent seen the tigs field such an across the board young side. Have to congratulate Hardwick for sticking to his plan. His predecssors always had some 'insurance' in the line up.

He also said the before the game the scoreboard is the least most important stat. at this stage of the season.

Overall i thought our defensive skills had improved with our tackling and smoothering, pressure . Turnovers made us look worse than we actually were.

Maybe because of their roles within the side and the effect those
coming back into the side are likely to have on their role ?

Much like Nason & Webberley, Edwards Connors & Nahas are guys who rely on having the ball fed out to them rather than going in and getting it, yet last night Edwards and Nahas in particular were having to win the footy in tight and then try and break free, with practically no bigger bodies around to protect them they were always going to struggle.

Isn't that what I said. But that's not saying much because Nahas is a spud.
