Nathan Ablett

I reckon we can guess pretty acurately though. Some players you can see have the potential to really dominate. Hawkins is an example, so is Lance Franklin. I have only seen one player who has the athletic capabilities of Franklins and that's Adam Goodes. Similarly only Tony Lockett has been more impressive than Hawkins at such a young age.

Nathan on the other hand does not stand out he not particularly strong, fast or possess great stamina. He has a good football brain, great timing and good skills. He will be an important player but he is not a star. Am I the only one who thinks this?

It seems the further you get from Gary the less of his football skill is passed on. Jnr is a star, Nathan is good but the first son got more of the magic, Luke ablett is playing some good football too while Tuck goes alright:D.

He is not a star at the moment but neither you or I can say with certainty that he won't be.

I'd just love to have the wisdom to pass final, irrevocable and everlasting judgement on someone that's only played 13 senior games. Amazing.

Ok last comment I make on this thread. Wouldn't want Arnie ****ting his pants.

I offered an opinion/prediction on a player, Of course it is not gospel. if you didn't like the opinion discuss why not or ignore it. Making petty sarcastic remarks just makes you out to be an ****er.

Fair call. Can't argue with that. I'll be honest I thought Ablett was ok before this year, but his improvement has surprised me.

It's more the comments to the effect of "He will be just a good player" or "He won't be a star" that I can't understand.

It's one thing to make a prediction, it's another to be so categorical.

I dont know , If you had have asked me at the start of last year , or even half way through the season , I would have just about agreed but I think he started to show some real form towards the end of the season. he was looking much more at home and I think with the team we have he will show more improvement as this year roles on. He will never be the superstar the name brings like his dad or even his brother. But I definately think he will make a name for himself in the cats side.
Dont judge by last weekends game because very few suited the conditions , I think he will be ok
Hi tonycam wondering who you are but i guess you work at the addy by the special comments you always make. I have a prediction for you N. Ablett in a bombers jumper and dons for flag 07:D :thumbsu: :p

How so? I don't think I was that far off base. Wayne Carey just last Monday said he thought Nathan Ablett lacked athleticism, was poor below his knees and a little slow last year.

I did say he could get to the level of Lance Whitnall. Lance wasw AA 2000, Carlton's leading goal kicker 3 times. Nathan has not reached that level yet. Granted I think Nathan doesn't seem anywhere near as slow as last year but I still have the same concerns.

I personally think Otten's is one of the most talented footballers in the league. He has never realised that talent however.

I have been, and am now more so, of the opposite opinion. Of course I'm no Wayne Carey, but I think his ground level work is amazing. I have read other comments from football experts posing that he may be the best ground level KPP in the competition. Watch how much of his own ball he is able to retrieve, and loves to handball creatively as well.

I've seen several of his marks on a lead as well, against Carlton being a perfect example, where he has been several yards in the clear. If that is not pace, then he must be very clever to get that kind of room. A couple of his running snaps, he evaded Carlton players, who didn't look like trying to chase him. Part of this is probably low morale and passion for the contest under the circumstances, but seems to have a nice burst when he needs it.

I couldn't care less about Lance Whitnall.

Also IMO, Nathan has shown more in his 13 games than Ottens has as a forward in his 2 and a bit seasons. I am yet to see Brad wheel onto his left after collecting the ball, and snap truly. Or tap a ball to his teammate, run on and create space for himself to run into goal. If Ottens has more ability in his little finger than Nathan, he is hiding it very very well.

Pretty accurate I reckon, there wouldn't be many of his size that I can think of with such great skills at ground level, a very clean ball handler.

As for his pace, don't think he's lightning fast but is deceptively quick, also has a great footy brain, knows when to time his leads and the correct positions to lead to, which for a forward is probably more important then straight out leg speed; a good example is Hawkins, don't think he'll win to many 100 meter sprints but found space on several occasions because of his ability to read the play and knowing when and where to lead.

Fingers crossed that Nath can continue with the improvement he displayed toward the end of last year and so far this year, when you think that midway through last season he was looking fairly ordinary it's been a remarkable transformation, now of course the challenge is to continue at, or near, this level.

he actually said that is what he thought up until the last two games and then went on to say that nathan was really good at ground level and had improved his speed.

Yeah I reckon for a big guy Nathan's agility at ground level is pretty good. To me he's a little like Matty Egan, just seems to be getting a little better with every game. Hopefully it continues.

Wasn't going to comment again on this thread but did anyone read the age today? Article "Nathan Ablett Quiet Achiever"

Quotes:
"Nathan Ablett's Development needs to be taken in two contexts, one is the fact he is 196 cm's, the other is that he eschewed the customary under 18 pathway"

"Many observers have commented he lacks leg speed"

"Nathan's Body language suggests that he feels he belongs"

Why don't they just sack their writers and cut and paste dirrectly from the forum. It would be much cheaper.
