Nathan Buckley, Lets Get Him!!!

I've been biting my tongue all year, saying to myself that Ratten will learn, that he will get better. But I can't any longer. Nearly every game he makes bad decisions, has our players playing a poor brand of footy our skills are shocking and little things like our center set up are bad.

I have been listening to Buckley talk on the TV everything he says is gold. I was listening to him advise under 18's and listening to his comments on the game and other games. He picks up on things quickly and he picks up on crucial things. And I don't think Brett does.

Lets face it, we have Ratten, Kernahan, Lappin, Bradley and Williams. Is that diversity? No. All from the same era and the same club. This tactic has proven not to work. We have Teague and Harvey, not from a successful background although Harvey I think has the credentials to say he was successful. But Harvey has little to do with the main group.

IMO the players don't respect Ratten. Judd, Scotland, Stevens & Fevola and players like them don't respect Ratten. These players see them selves as coaches and have a say in what happens.
This is something Pagan did right. Pagan was boss and what he said went! He was an authoritarian, he had the respect of the youth and had Stevens and players like him playing well. I don't think Buckley would let other players be boss like Ratten does.

I am going to say it and say it now. Ratten is not going to take us there, we should be going for Buckley, we can't get much worse than this.

With all the cattle he has out there Ratts is one of the worst coaches in the league, and should be given the arse at season's end, if he can't make the finals with the current playing group.

Ratten seems v reactive, as a coach he dances to the oppositions tune

Hard to rate your list, big contrast from St K match but one of your no 1 draft picks needs some coaching direction. To me Gibbs looks lost as a player, obvious talent but so outside.

Buckley would be a fantastic pick up for you guys, Gibbs etc would flourish with him but is there room therre for Judd and Buckleys Alpha male status?

Cant see it happening this year and he may not be around after that

Nathan Buckley commands respect, when he speaks people listen, not add their own opinion.

Nathan buckley was a great player, performed in big games and understands the game.

Brett Ratten makes the wrong decisions, doesn't pick up on things, doesn't command respect, isn't prepared to drop any one, is gutless, selects poorly etc.

What could we lose by getting Buckley?

Brett Ratten is WITHOUT A DOUBT the worst coach in AFL. I shared my thoughts on him weeks ago in my "Brett Ratten is a very ordinary coach" thread and absolutely nothing has changed since then. Im not sure Buckley is the answer but at the LEAST id like to see some more tactical football brains around Ratten in 2010 (eg. Laidley).

I think Eddie is accepting of the fact that Buckley will end up coaching somewhere else, considering Collingwood is still fairly loved in with Mick Malthouse. BUT for Bucks to coach THE ARCH ENEMY woulld spell the end of their friendship and cut ties with Collingwood forever. It won't happen

I am with the OP on the votes thread - Malthouse would be a much better option. Who knows if Bucks can coach - Ratts could sound just as good as him comentating - he had everybody drooling in the interview thread this week but THAT AINT COACHING.

While I am at it - I have never been able to work out how it was that Riley got the 2IC job without question

I'd love him. But would he want to come to the dark side?

He would go from the most hated player in the game to the most hated coach in the league. I think he'll be a great coach but don't like our chances of nabbing him.

IDK but if Ratts can't take this side into finals after 2 years, 3 no 1 draft picks, a gun full forward and one of the best players to ever play the game and Matthew Knights with aging superstars, and a young brigade can then bloody oath he can't coach here no longer.

If a past champion can't get this team up, noone can.

And besides, blaming Ratten for tonight is weak. He may have had an average night but for mine, he got the match ups pretty much spot on.

I'm not sure the game plan is as bad as it is made out to be by many.

At the end of the day it comes down to the players. If they don't put in the effort, no game plan will work. It was a disgraceful effort tonight by the players and they need to take the blame, even though the coach will be forced to take it for them.

- I'm not sure Buckley could ever bring himself to coach Carlton.
- You need a tried and tested coach, not another rookie with no experience.
- Blame can't lay entirely on the coach when you're whole team refuses to lift and your depth is virtually non-exsistant.


Honestly, if you're going to chase a coach, it should be one with experience like Chocco or Malthouse.

I was happy when Ratten was given the job because of how much I loved him as a player. While he hasn't really impressed greatly as a coach, I think calling for his head two years into his coaching career is a bit premature, especially considering the gains he's made with this team.

I do worry about the re-appointment process though. Richard Pratt had the philosophy of getting the best man for the job and with Ratten's contract expiring at seasons end, it would irresponsible of the board if they didn't at least ask the question - Is Ratten really the best man for the job? Is re-appointing him the best option we have in heading toward our next flag?

Right now though, he's our coach and he's had us in the top 8 every week bar two. That's a hell of a lot better than where we've been for the last 7 seasons, so let's give the guy some credit and give him our support. This young team is still a chance to play finals and discounting last night, looks to be going places.
