Not really, pay disputes have existed ever since the VFL was established in 1897.

Players leaving due to money only happening now is false.

You know Syd Coventry? He captained our greatest side which won 4 flags in a row. He nearly left because he wanted more money. Fred Fanning left Melbourne because he was paid more playing for another club. Saying that money issues did not exist back in the pre-1980s is a big myth.
Len Thompson went on strike in the 70's for a better contract !!!

dont you feel bad luring poor innocent young men to a club that will never win a premiership? .... i felt so sorry for lenny hayes... they should have told him to leave when he was young...

of course freeman is not showing much loyalty to us so i suppose he deserves the fate that he has chosen..
Premierships look great but they don't pay bills and what not.

I dont feel bad for any afl footballer tbh

Firstly, while I'm disappointed he's going, I actually have a bit of sympathy for Nathan. Once you add in Treloar , a midfield of De Goey, Pendlebury, Greenwood, Sidey, Adams, Varcoe, Crisp, and Swan makes it very difficult for Nathan to get any game time. Let's not even talk about Broomhead.
And if Freeman is right about Aish certain to come over, well he's really up against it. That's twelve decent quality midfielders.

Official statement on the club website:

"Collingwood has today accepted Nathan Freeman’s request to be traded.

Freeman was recruited with pick No. 10 in the 2013 National Draft but played just four VFL matches and no senior matches in his two injury-riddled years at the Holden Centre.

Collingwood General Manager of List Management, Derek Hine, said Freeman believes that a fresh start may rekindle his career.

"Given the significant investment in Nathan, we will be exploring trade scenarios that are in the very best interests of Collingwood," Hine said.

Collingwood will make no further comment."

well at least you're a realist. I suppose you have to be. I actually hope you get freeman. I've got a feeling that he knows that he's lost some of his zip and he needs to get his big payday early on...

Just posturing I reckon re the bolded, although imagine if Hawthorn or North offered their first rounders

I doubt we will take anything less than a second rounder. A third rounder in this draft is pretty much worth nothing, it's a throwaway pick. We will make him go through the draft without blinking if pick 43 is all we are losing.

Yeah, of course it's posturing. Hawks would be interesting. Doubt they'd offer him the same coin as the Saints, but an offer to go to the most successful club of the professional era would be hard to pass up.

Love the tone of the statement.

But that means he himself believes he is not as good as any of those players?
Confidence in your own ability, anyone??

Wish him well, thats football these days.
Looking forward to Treloar et al

Let's put it this way - De Goey was "pick 5". Freeman was "a top 10 draft pick".

It's like when someone claims they came "in the top 10" in a race, you can bet your ass they didn't get a medal ;)
Hey man, we're trying to hype his value here. Hes a top 10 draft pick ok :D

Oh, guernsey 21 available too

Maxy on SEN stating (and then repeated by the afternoon guys) that Freeman was offered a performance based contract that was significantly more than what Saints offered but went for the guaranteed amount.
