What? Why? This is a negotiation between two parties with unequal negotiating positions. I'd compare it to similar situations:

O'Rourke: originally pick 2, played 9 games, wanted out, result: pick 18 (equivalent)
Polec: originally pick 5, played 16 games, wanted out, result: pick 28 (equivalent)
Longer: originally pick 8, played 9 games, wanted out, result: pick 21 (equivalent)
Jaksch: originally pick 12, played 7 games, wanted out, result: pick 27 (equivalent) along with Whiley
Docherty: originally pick 12, played 13 games, wanted out, result: pick 33

But most of these guys were higher picks than Freeman, and all of them had played more games. So as a guide I think it's definitely 30+.

As a guide we are not Brisbane or GWS.
Freeman has chosen the wrong club to shaft.
I would not be getting too cocky.
We could do same next year with Mcartin or similar high pick & offer big bucks to leave.

It is quite an uncommon charge by a departing player, to suggest that the rehab wasn't up to scratch. In fairness, I don't suppose there's much else the poor bastard could actually criticise.

If there's any concrete evidence that our medical and rehab practices are anything less than best practice, then I for one would be happy to hear it. Unfortunately, my suspicion is that Freeman and Connors are just throwing around mud to make themselves look cleaner. We'll see.
Not only that but if it is the club, why go someone else to screw them over.
If he would stayed at the Pies, he could have brought it up at every contract negotiation and make something out of it. Now he will get a quick fix for the FU by leaving but in 3 years time, all StKilda will remember that he was the brat that they took a punt with while he wanted to get out and therefor he owes them. You can't say he has put himself in a better position for the longer term.

I'm actually tempted to email the club, urging them to force Freeman to choose between the draft and us, do not give him the option to trade, do not give him the option to dick us around.

Reckon they'll listen to a Legends member? :p

Yep, good point, agreed. It's not fair value, it's true value in this situation. Contract status and the player's relationship with the club are huge factors. Hence Beams was always leaving last year, for instance, and you guys did well to get reasonable value for him. The only one that stumps me is Wellingham, still can't work out how you ended up with pick 17 for a GOP.
what is a GOP?

Can people really not see the difference between Freeman and Treloar, Beams, or any number of other players?
Yes I was dirty on Beams for leaving, and maybe Freeman needs this which is understandable to an extent.
But he is leaving having contributed nothing to the club, having been paid for 2 years to do nothing and having cost a top 10 draft pick, and he is comprehensively screwing us over. If he has been mismanaged then fair enough, or if he feels that this is his only opportunity and could be his last contract. But this just feels bad, given he has contributed nothing to the club, unlike Beams/Treloar who contributed for years, and got their clubs more draft-wise than they originally had anyway. But it's up to him

What was the feeling of Freeman from Pie fans before he was drafted? And were you pleasantly surprised or mortified when he was picked at 10? What kind of player did you see him being? Similar to anyone running around now?
Expected at least a Wellingham up to possibly a Judd/Danger.

This. Don't be greedy Wayne Arnold
Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures, the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the U.S.A & the Collingwood Football Club.
Come on down...Adam Treloar.
P off Freeman.

Does anyone else think that it was a bad idea to offer Freeman a performance based contract decided on the number of games he played. If he had have stayed, I'd have wanted him to be managed very conservatively for the next year or two. I'd have wanted him to be rested when his hamstrings were tight. I wouldn't want him to have a large financial incentive to ignore and be secretive about warning signs.

A mistake? That depends if he was prepared to take a contract of a base value of 200k or 250k... I wouldn't have offered him 300k like the Saints reportedly have.... If he would have taken a 250k offer from us with no conditionals I'd personally have offered such.

Even though it hurts to lose a top ten pick who cares, would have just ended up another clinton young type... or now more likely a jesse smith type. Cant win them all.

Hmm, might offer their 2nd round next year banking on the fact they expect to finish higher.
I reckon it's more likely they'll want to hang on to pick 5 and trade next years 1st for Carlisle, but it would be gold if they traded nest year's 2nd to us and they ended up having a worse year.

Yeah... It would be good, but don't see it happening. I'm a big fan of the current team the Saints are putting together.

It's an obvious case of him taking the comfort of a longer deal and $. You don't blame him I suppose but it also shows that he has no faith in his own ability to 1) get fit, and 2) do the hard yards and break into the 22. In the long term we all know if he makes it as an elite type player on our list then he will definitely be financially $$$ rewarded and looked after. Connors maybe aware of bigger issues with his fitness and that's why he's convinced Freeman to walk
(3 year 1Mil). If it's mainly about the dollar then Connors is a fool and Freeman should be moving him on.

IMO I think he's taking the easy option out if he leaves and if that's the case I don't want soft c?cks at our club. C Ya.
May be his last chance to cash in with his hammies, so can't blame him.
$300,000 next year and who knows how much for the next 2 years - somewhere between 200 and 600 I guess - is a pretty good package for a 19 yo who may never play an AFL game.

Another? He hasn't played 1 as yet.

Freeman will have plenty to do to break into the Collingwood midfield next year, if as expected Treloar arrives. At the moment he is untried and has nothing in his resume to prove to me he is AFL ready and has been out of the game for two years. He has all the makings of an AFL footballer but it's only potential at this stage. If it was me at his age (...and it wasn't Collingwood??, I'd play for free and offer up a knacker) and another club offerred me 3 years and a solid finacial offer with no strings, an opportunity to break into the starting mid field sooner rather than later as a professional footballer you'd be daft not to consider. If Collingwood were not prepared to offer what the Sainters offered up then he has a different value to us.

"But if he wants to go then we probably don’t want someone at the club who doesn't want to be there 100 per cent." Personally if StK want to play "hardball"....then I say let him go in the draft....sooner or later someone has to say "no" to Mr. Freeman and the other upstarts currently thinking they can "play" with the AFL system. Let Brisbane claim him, or Carlton. Let's see what his dad says to that?
