Nathan Fyfe vs Dustin Martin

Interesting to have another look at this... Martin has just continued to grow in performance and stature to the point of being probably a top 3 player in the league right now.

Fyfe has been arguably the best player in the competition in the past but at just 25/26 his history of a broken leg has taken the lustre off Fyfe and there are questions as to whether he will ever regain past form.
When Martin leaves at the end of the year, will you still think this?

Why else would this thread be bumped after 6 years? Another player tiger fans can cross of their list as Dusty's inevitable rise to the undesputed number one player in the comp continues.

It was bumped because they are both subject to being major trade targets... woteva bud. Haters gotta hate i suppose

Interesting.

Fair bit of Fyfe bashing.

I enjoyed watching Martin give Neale all that space in the middle to hit Mundy laces out. School boy error by Martin.

I also enjoyed how you said you'd probably have taken Fyfe over Dusty 3 years ago... like it was even close. Fyfe was hands down miles ahead and it's taken him breaking his leg TWICE for this thread to pop up again.

What next? Maybe find a thread from years ago talking about Richmond lose the close ones, now they.... hang on.... think that thread is still running.

After reading his other posts in this thread, I apologise. It clearly was his way of pumping up Dusty's tyres. I went into bat for him too early. And this is what I get :$
Mate i am happy to call it as it is. Why is it if you favour a player who plays for the team u support your automatically dismissed. Would like to just discuss the facts... or peoples own opinions instead of cheap shots

I havn't bashed Fyfe once...... but u tend to over emphasise your point by doing exactly what you accuse me of.

I said i would probably have taken Fyfe 3 yrs ago.... how is that a bashing lol

I'd like a serious discussion... no need to have a kneejerk reaction to anything not ultra positive towards Fyfe.

Oh ok.

You used the word probably, like I'd probably take a million dollars rather then a scratch and win ticket with the chance to win 2 million.

There was no probably about it 3 years ago is what I'm saying.

But back to the serious discussion.

Almost everyone in a neutral stance would take Martin over Fyfe right now.

Opening this thread was nothing but trolling.

Interesting that you bump a 6 year old thread after the only 10 game stretch in that entire time (120 odd games) where it is potentially arguable that Martin > Fyfe, if the entire basis of your conclusion is their form in the last 10 games

Also interesting is that, despite being well down on his regular output, Fyfe has still had more contested possessions than Martin this year

I haven't watched much of Richmond this year, but in the Freo Richmond round 8 game I thought Lachie Neale was more damaging than Martin. Big thing I noticed was the tackling pressure Lachie puts on compared to Dusty.

Anyhow. Nice opportunistic bump here. Will lol if Dusty leaves Richmond.

If you looked at 3 years ago simplistically I suppose. I don't think it was as clear cut (wait , wait before u kneejerk). Because... they were both 22 yr old midfielders with seemingly improvement clearly in them. Fyfe hadn't won the brownlow at that point either. He averaged 26.95 disposals and 1.2 goals per game. Martin averaged 25.45 and 1.22 goals per game.... Fyfe was more complete as a player and a clearance beast but both had plenty of development left in them in my opinion and short of seeing into the future I couldn't tell that Fyfe would win the brownlow or.... that he would twice break his leg.

I followed both of these guys in their under age years... before they were aligned to a team and I rmember Martin be an insatiable midfield beast and Fyfe kinda more of a utility swing man, mid/forward. Fyfe ironically becoming the two way running inside outside midfield beast first, didn't necessarily mean that I doubted any less that Martin would also show eventually what he did game after game in under age footy.

So yeah..... 3 years ago I probably would have taken Fyfe.

For the record... halfway through that following year (2015) I would have definitely taken Fyfe.

Pretty sure due to his injury and layoff, Fyfe is playing more contested coal face and less of the 50/50 inside out game which he played in his super years... very similar to what the Cats did with Dangerfield at the start of the season.

I assume Fyfe will increase his outside run for a better spread of inside outside ball next year after another preseason.

Not actually true..... sorry.... both have had 160 contested possessions while Dusty has had more clearances 72 to 59.

Ok

Or has Fyfe's management told them he is staying...

or at least, not interested in going to the saints. There are a number of possibilities, but it's rather odd to say 'we want good experienced players' including several people but specifically excluding one most would consider to be a similar standard/budget.

You sound mad bro

Geez, some people get antsy.

Fyfe better a few years back. Martin better now. Fyfe's best has been better than Martin's best.

Fyfe has had three great seasons. Dusty is only midway through his second great season.

A couple more seasons in them both. Fyfe might rise to the top again and Dusty might fall. Or it might go the other way. Or they might both have s few years where they're both Top 5 players. Or not.

Injury has limited Fyfe, but that is part of the game. Durability is also part of the game, and Dusty has benefitted there. In five years it might come to Dusty retiring because he's worn out/burnt out or just ready to, while Fyfe might have multiple seasons left.
