Vardy to miss a month

Club has come out this morning and said that Nathan Vardy is having surgery on a hip he injured in the win over Adelaide.

They say recovery is a minimum of four weeks, so unless something drastic changes it looks like it's season over for Nathan.

Disappointing way to end the year for him but he can look back knowing he's made huge progress in 2011.

I hope Trent West ready to play finals footy....

Sad news for Nathan.
I guess it just makes Match Selection a touch easier.
Trent West...come on down!

As long as it doesn't result in Hawkins rucking.

Goodness knows what they will do if West or Ottens goes down. We haven't given any other ruckmen game time all year when we've had the opportunity.

Glad that West will play finals (unless they put a certain non ruckman in the ruck, let's not even think of that because we want to win finals) but disappointed for Vards.

Nevertheless the right decision to put him in for surgery now and give him a full pre season. He's made fantastic strides this year for a second year tall, and I've got no doubt that he'll be back bigger and better next year, and is a really important part of our future.

this is it guys, West now gets the job and it's probably the 1st time ever at the club he is now almost certain for his spot in our best 22 barring any injury. He's the perfect bloke to take into the finals, strong, athletic and mobile. Will cause major concerns for any team apart from West Coast and Collingwood with Leigh Brown complementing Jolly. He also does all the one percenters that seem to go unnoticed and as unfortunate it is for Vardy, he's our future anyways but West will gain the confidence he needs now heading into the last 2 matches of the home & away season.

So the talls in ruck for Saturday are Pods, Hawkins, Ottens and West.
Injury and suspension have sorted that out.
Hawkins needs to play a blinder to cement his spot or out he goes for Moons against Collingwood.
I believe in Finals Pods and Moons WILL play if fit.
Then it's between Hawkins and West for the 2nd ruck spot depending on who we play.
Against Collingwood/Hawthorn I reckon Hawkins. Against W/C it has to be West.
Carlton line ball.

I do not want a repeat of this:

Asked after the game on K-Rock whether his eyes lit up when he saw Hawkins on the other side of the circle, Jolly replied: "Absolutely".

"I suppose he's not a genuine ruckman. He just goes in there to force contests, so I knew when he was in there he was going to be a bit timid and I made the most of that," he said

"When players like that come in to the middle, you really just want to drive your knee into them and make them earn it and make them think twice about doing it again."

I think only one of Hawkins and Mooney can play, regardless of our opponent.

In a way its a relief for the headache that the MC were going to have. Bad luck for the young fella but his time will come. I kind of think he was running out of steam a little and i think West was the better option if they decide to go with 2 rucks.

How many other ruckmen do we have? How many opportunities have we had to give ruckmen game time this year?

Blake was dead man walking and then decided to have elective surgery.
Simpson played one game and (I think?) has either missed games or not been impressive in the magoos.

I think that the match committee did a fantastic job to get game time into West when they did.

Blake is fit again after his surgery isnt he?
God, imagine if west or ottens went down, and we had to call on Blake to play his 100th in a grand final.....

But anyway, good news for West - although I would be thinking that he would get the nod over Vardy.

If we are to win in september/october we NEED to go in with 2 tall forwards and 2 rucks to be able to match the Pies - there isnt any other way....

I know what Witsend is saying, but Hawkins should not be a ruckman in finals against any opponent. We can't afford to give the opposition mids an armchair service ride while Hawkins outjumps himself, and Ottens needs the support of a proper ruckman. That proper ruckman will also allow us to throw Ottens forward for 3-4 minutes at times, which particularly against Hawthorn, I can see as being something we can use to our advantage. Most importantly, if Hawkins plays in the ruck Pods either gets triple teamed in the forward 50 or becomes our get out option long at half back and then has to sit the ball on Stokes' head at half forward for the opposition to run the ball merrily back into their forward line. Which is precisely why Hawkins should not play in the ruck, and we play two talls and two rucks. Anything else is a MASSIVE mistake and will result in us not going all the way.

Yeah thats it!
Its not like West and Ottens are complete duds when they get put up forward either.

If one of the ruckmen were someone like Blake who is a tap ruckman and nothing else, then fine, but we have 2 rucks that can take good contested grabs and kick goals.

So is there really any need for 3 forwards with one moonlighting as a back up ruck and one full time ruck as opposed to 2 forwards and 2 rucks, both of whom can rotate forward to make an impact?!

Heck, I would love to see Moons play good finals footy again, but god damn I would love to snatch a premiership cup out of the hands of the Magpies a hell of a lot more!! :D

Wow big talk from Jolly!!
Hawkins may not be an ideal choice for a ruck, but he's not completely useless.
He also understands our forward structure very well.
I still believe that if Mooney plays, which I think he will, then it becomes a choice of Hawkins v West.
I just think Hawkins is a better player than West overall, but again it depends on the opponent.
Against Collingwood, they are not a dominant rucking team. Basically you end up with Hawkins v Brown which is fine for mine. Same deal for Hawthorn and Carlton whose their back-halfs are susceptible to tall forwards.
Against W/C you may be more tempted to play two genuine rucks but tbh Vardy was a better choice imo, but that is no longer possible so West may get a guernsey if that eventuates.

Im gonna play the contraryion role a little and say that whilst one could never plan this - and I would never wish an injury on any player - that this has inadvertently saved CS and MC a tough talk with Vards.

Vards is the future at Geelong for sure. That said, for the next 6 weeks even if healthy, West has him covered. Vards simply doesnt have the tank or the bulk to chop Otto out with regular success against the Coll and WC big ruck types.

Im not taking anything away from his efforts or his season and he will get better and perhaps even become great, but like PO alluded to earlier....
not this year.

Best of luck to Vards on a full and speedy recovery...:thumbsu:

Go Catters...

According to Vardy's twitter, he's obviously had the surgery done in Hobart. Probably by the same specialist who did SJ's in 2009.

Obviously the club isn't mucking around with the injury - which is a good thing

Glad he won't be rushed back for the finals, long term future is what's most important, he'll be a really really good ruck/forward for us in time.

Westy's time to step up for the finals series.

Looking forward to this :thumbsu:

Bad timing for Vardy.

I get the feeling Scott still won't play West against some teams, but given Hawthorn have Bailey and Hale rotating, he will play in the first week of finals.
