Review Neagle

Watching the replay, Neagle was superb in a piece of play that helped set up our first goal (Jobe).

Everybody was struggling to get a clean possession, and after going in two or three times, big Jay picks it up, fends off two blokes, runs around another and handballs (on his left) over a pack to a guy in space.

He's a smart footballer, and getting more impressive each week.

This is what I noticed too.

Its great he kicked a couple but he had a hand in other goals, usually through pressure on Norths defenders.

Was quite prepared to give him the flick a while ago but he has definately changed my mind 100%.

Please elaborate.

Not sold on his ability to time a lead to perfection?
Not sold on his marking ability?
Not sold on his goal kicking ability?
Not sold on his ability to use his size in ground contests?
Not sold on his ability to bring other team mates into play around goals?

I am not saying this guy is going to be the next Plugger or Lloyd, but I think for someone that has only just seemingly had the switch go off in his head, coupled with the poor service from his midfield, he's looking alright. Definitely worth persisting with for the remainder of the season and will hopefully get a good preseason behind him leading into 2011.

Not sold on his agility and aerobic capacity.
Not sold on his ability to take a contested mark.
Not sold on his ability to concentrate for four quarters.
Not sold on his ability to time his lead and into the right places, Hardingham showed him up in his first game.
Not sold on his decision making skills.

Agility/Aerobic capacity/concentration will come with a better fitness base which he does not have at present. I'd love him to have a full preseason as all these things should improve dramatically. Like I said, it has only been recently the switch seems to have gone off in his head that he wants this.

If he goes through the motions for the rest of the year or his preseason shows nothing I'll question him but right now I'm happy with what I've seen in his return matches. If we had better disposal going into the forward 50 I reckon he'd look even better.

I'm certainly prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt and look at the positives, both now and going forwards.

Thanks for the clarification.

Whilst I am not on the inner sanctum of the club, nor do I know Neagle personally, IMO he seems to have decided he wants this. As such, I reckon many of the issues you mentioned will improve if he gets an extended run and has a good off season (agilit, aerobic capacity, concentration). If he decides to go through the motions for the rest of the year or doesn't have the hunger over preseason then I'll change my tune but for now I'm liking what I see.

I don't agree with your other couple of points but each to their own.

You can never be sold on Neagle for at least one constant reason: his mentality. Although he suffered an injury in the pre-season, he should little to no initiative to diet and keep the weight off. It's one thing to work your way back into the team, and I respect what he's done over the last month, but it's another to earn respect by maintaining consistency.

I agree, I just hope what we have seen over the last month is a sign of the future.

Perhaps dropping him after round 1 and keeping him out for so long was exactly what was needed though. Let him know that he is not an auto selection after Lloyd departing, that if he wants it he has to work.

Maybe the (slight) prospect of playing with his brother(s) is starting to drive him a bit. Who knows? Not me that's for sure.

What I do know is I am starting to like what I see on the field from Jay and I'd love to see him start to make the most of the one thing nobody seems to question, his talent.

Still making my way through the replay, and came across an effort in the goalsquare during the early stages of the 2nd quarter.

Scott Thompson was in space and looking to clear it from defence, but Neagle persisted and didn't "buy the candy" Thompson was offering. Neagle pressured him, caught up with him and Thompson hurriedly kicked around a corner straight into the arms of Gumbleton for a set shot on goal.

looked good Saturday night. Persist with him for another season.

Contracted so we kinda have to..

I think he straightens us up alot..

Just the big body player to kick long to in a tight contest.

May not be the best player but he helps out far more than the kicks, marks handballs, goals columns that appear in the paper on a monday morning...

Really has a great kick as well.

I remember the play but go back to Godzke's post.

There's no denying he needs some work, but everytime I see him play I think what a player he could be. I guess that's the frustration..

Let's all hope for a injury free pre-season.

Adds so much to the forwardline.

To the doubters, get along to one of the four remaining games, and watch how he busts open packs and provides the rest of our forwardline with a chance.

Tonight was the best I've seen him below how knees. Strong no homo.

He's immobile and he made a couple of poor decisions but the forward line has looked much better since the Melbourne game. He straightens the side up and brings other guys like Monfries into play. Having him up front also allows Hurley to play back, where he was so damaging tonight.

Was brilliant tonight.

That banana to slow down the momentum of the Saints was superb, definitely made me relax a bit.

He's been gaining my confidence more and more as each week has gone by, and I have a feeling it'll continue. Presented well, ran well, crashed into players like a tow truck and didn't look like stopping...

Kept his 2 goals per game average going too. :thumbsu:

Great stuff.

Strong around the hips, when he picks up the ground ball, either shrugs the defender off, or draws him in, and lays the ball to a smaller forward. Has been fantastic in my opinion, especially since he's been playing more of a CHF role further up the ground.
