I do not think I have missed a man as much as this guy for the melbourne football club. Was extremely harsh his sacking in 2007 when an injury hit list had one of the most unluckiest start to a season with numerous matches being lost by under a goal, however that is not the reasoning behind this thread.

I would love to see this guy return to the club in some capacity as his passion, emotion and bringing the best of individuals ability is something I have not seen in a man involved within this club since his departure in 2007 and something that is sorely lacking within the club at this point in time.

For those of you who disagree with me and my idea, try watching this video and his sprint down the aisle. It is a moment that I will never forget.

Man I remember that final against the Dogs so well. Was probably the last time I was completely happy as a Melbourne supporter.

Not sure about re-recruiting Daniher though - why would he come back? Also there is probably a strong tendancy to only remember the good times, much like after a bad break-up, you still beat yourself up and wonder if you should get back together.

But feel free to post more pics/vids/memories of us when we were somewhat decent.

Daniher had a long time in charge, and was up and down the whole time.

We have to appreciate his inspirational ability, but i dont think that team was going to win a premiership post 2007/enter geelongs great team.

That video has had plenty of airplay on my computer recently.

Remember being there and the crowd was just embracing anyone around them.

Great night.

I was pretty happy in 2006 after beating the saints

Hard to see how he would have recovered from 2007 better than anyone else - we were absolutely cactus after that year with all the senior players dropping like flies en masse.

I know he did it in '98 but that was well out of the box. Also if he'd last through '07 and we won the spoon in '08 even if he'd survived that there's no way he'd have delivered the same sort of epic tank in '09 with his career on the line - that was done with the freedom of a coach who knew he wasn't going anywhere (yet).

From memory he resigned didn't he? rather than sacked. I think he saw the writing on the wall on 2 fronts after losing the first 9 games of 2007.

1) He probably thought he would get sacked come season's end anyway.

2) He probably thought that he had taken the group as far as he could.

He certainly got our boys to play with spirit though over a long period which is something we haven't had for a while but I think he made the right choice in the end.

I am not saying that he should be senior coach as i think that would obviously be a mistake, however having him back in some capacity could not hrut either, even if it was purely for his passion as this club is bereft of passion at the moment

It wasn't a final. We had been 2nd on the ladder up until round 10-11, after the Queen's Birthday match. We played the Eagles, who were 1st, after a 5-day break in front of 44,000 (amazing, hey?) and lost, leading into 7 consecutive losses. We needed to win our last three games to make the finals from memory: Bulldogs, Cats and Bombers.

We started 2006 0-3, came back, pushed our way up the ladder, and pushed past the Saints in the first week of the finals.

In 2007 we started 0-9, beat Adelaide and then Collingwood, both relatively good teams, only to lose to an awful Richmond side by 10 goals.

He gave his all but simply couldn't get the team he had any further. After two rebuilds (1998-2000, 2002-2004), we were as good as we were going to get. Enter Bailey and two wooden spoons.

Now, looking back, it was definitely the club holding Daniher back, not the other way around. The guy had his favourites, built an amazing relationship with the playing group, and demanded the best and hard work.

But when it came down to it, the club as a whole just didn't have the push, the grind to get it that extra step.

At first I despised Daniher, but I think that was more out of frustration. Now, looking back, he gave me some of my favourite and most memorable moments as a Demons supporter.

From memory, these are my favourite Daniher-coached matches, wins of the like we haven't seen since:

Round 22, 1998 vs Richmond - 70,000+ at the MCG, destroyed a Richmond side hoping for a finals spot.

First final vs Carlon, 2000 - I was being thrashed by Carlton supporters all day. To see Bruce and Green light the team up in the last quarter was magical stuff.

Semi-final vs Adelaide, 2002 - We lost the game, but I'm yet to witness football from Melbourne that was as good, clean, crisp as the football displayed in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Magical stuff, and I have never heard the MCG erupt as much as it did that night. The loss was disappointing though.

vs. Geelong in Geelong, 2005 - First win there since 88. Nuf' said.

I miss the man looking back.

I am fond of ND but i am fonder of Swooper

Amen to that Comrade!

I liked Daniher and thought he got plenty out of our list but I think his time was up when left. He had done everything he could and even though it was a shame how his sacking went down it was probably the right move. Gave us some fantastic memories though.

he rooted up our list and we are paying for it today:confused:

If you are going to say anyone rooted our list it has to lie with craig cameron. Daniher would have said the TYPE of player he wanted but it lies with the RECRUITER on who exactly we pick up. That being said we were extremely unlucky with molan in 2001.

And to the person who spoke about that final in 2002, i wholeheartedly agree, that comeback was nothing short of amazing and i remember a passage of play where Jolly tapped it down to Johnstone in the centre square bounce and he ran on to kick a wonderful goal. This passage of play was when i genuinely thought we could be a premiership winning side.

Its these type of games that i sorely miss being a passionate dees supporter, i mean even in 08 we had the wins against freo and brisbane but its just been so long since we even got close to any other team in the competition that it is seriously depressing

I remember his last game in charge, the boys were down by 6 goals at quarter time to the Bombers, got back up, but Scott Lucas kicked an arsy goal with 10 seconds left to snatch it for Essendon. Most upset I've ever been after a game, except perhaps the 1 pt loss to Collingwood in 2010.

I miss his spirit but that's about it. He was an ok coach, not a great coach and we never would have won a premiership under him unfortunately. I miss Jeff White just a little bit more.

Loved the man to bit, nearly cried when he resigned/sacked. Also nearly cried after the dons game. It's funny though how that final games against the dons symbolised his coaching career, galiant effort, but just short of sucess

Those were great times. A prelim final every even year, we actually won games and spanked some teams, plus we were playing a really fun attacking style through the corridor. Shame about the odd years though, if we weren't so damn inconsistent under him he might still be coach today.

I miss Jeff White circa 2004, he was a beast that year

His last year and a half he was a shadow of himself

Agree with you though, Danners was an ok coach, but not great. I don't think he had what it takes to win a flag

His match day coaching was hit and miss, if it was going well, it was fine, if it wasn't, it was often a train wreck

We continually had mid season slumps

We continually lost winnable games

It appeared he played favourites too much (Yze asking to be dropped cause he was out of form)

He held back 1st year draftees too much

It's the past, we need to stop looking back
