So it's pretty obvious we need a CHF if we're going to take the next step.
Options:
- A Edwards: has been battling admirably but is no more than a leading third tall slash high half forward type. Too old.
- McGuane: good backup in this position and worth keeping on the list but is not the answer.
- Vickery: IMO is a ruckman, a potentially very good one at that. Better suited to playing around the ground than in the forwardline from what I've seen. Should make his transition to no. 1 ruck over the next few years.
- McBean: is yet to play a game and despite his many good characteristics is very much an unknown quantity. Could be the answer but will still be a while off.
- Elton: forward or defender? Or Carlisle type swingman? Who knows. Does the club? Great contested mark, decent field kick, poor set shot, very mobile. Is he good enough?
- Astbury: same basket as Elton. Needs to work on his pace, which has capacity to improve given he's still recovering from some horrid injuries. Good field kick and set shot, decent mark.
- Griffiths: all the attributes of an absolute gun - except, it seems, gonads. If he can take the game on more and back himself to have an impact he'll be a great player and possibly a great CHF.
IMO it's time for us to start trialling some of these guys in the seniors. We've got nothing to lose and everything to gain from doing so. No use leaving them to rot at Coburg, waiting for them to develop new attributes. As evidenced by players like Arnot and Vlastuin, sometimes playing in the seniors is the very best thing for a kid's development. Being surrounded by good players and better structures is paramount to development IMO and a big reason why Geelong and Sydney's kids always seem to do so well.
If none of the above turn out to be good options... Howbout trying Rance at CHF? I think his attributes offensively are fantastic and could be of great use down that end. If we could either recruit another defender or put Astbury/Elton in his place alongside Chaplin and Grimes... It's an experiment I would be open to personally.
Thoughts on how we can plug this vital hole in our premiership squad?
