Hey guys/girls. I have an assignment for tafe and i need some data on whether the football viewing public think that tanking exists. So basically a simple yes or no poll, and if anyone wishes to express some qualitative information, that will be muchly appreciated.

Yes, I think it does from coaches and selectors etc, but I don't think players try to lose, they're to proud!

Of Course When you have 5 or less Games to go and You can get a Priority Pick by Losing then you Lose on Purpose

I voted yes. like dave's scenario.. say you are last... have 5 games left and if you dont win another you get a priority pick. the rewards for losing the next 5 stacked up against doing the honourable thing and winning one or two of the 5 pretty much suggest it would be stupid and short sighted NOT to tank.

i agree with the other comments. difficult to say if the players actually tank or are instructed to do so. howver coaches definately do it, by sending players away for surgery, playing youth etc ie. creative list management. its been going on for ages actually and its not till recently that tanking has become the popular dirty word for it, thanks to carlton doing it so blatantly.

but surely if the coaches have an intention to lose the players will pick up on this vibe?

I voted yes.
Carlton- I tank therefore I am.
Enough said.

Yes, I think it exists. But it's not players who 'tank'. It's football depts. Tanking happens in the medical rooms and around the selection table IMO.
