People that try to squeeze or negotiate annoy the shit out of me, I give a quote at work and that's the price. If you don't like it go somewhere else... I'm not dropping my pants just for someone who is worried about saving 20 bucks and who I likely will never see again.

In a trade background it's particularly annoying as what right to randoms have to tell me my price is high, when they only see the end product and have no idea of how much work is involved in any particular job
Not sure how much effort you put into writing this but could you cut the word count down by 20% please

I purchased an item from The Good Guys several years ago with their famous 'pay cash and we'll slash the price' jingle.

The sticker price was $65 and upon paying cash at the register they reduced the price by 65 cents.

Slash the price my arse.
I'd rather that they just charged $65 so I didn't have to carry around the coins

I have some relatives who went with someone cheap for wedding shots back in the 70s. He ****** up the film and all wedding shots they have are from amatuer shots by guests.

The photographer for my parents wedding set up the portrait photos of them infront of a window so you can see the stupid photographer in the windows reflection with the camera up to his face

Save even more money by not getting married

If you are patient and genuinely willing to walk away you can get a good deal. But you need to factor in the cost of your time in trying to get the best deal. Will I waste a whole Saturday to save $20 on an appliance? No. But I'll spend half an hour or so. Its often only worth haggling on more expensive things.

For jobs, it can be good to ask for a cost breakdown. Volume builders (housing) will itemise features in a house but often give a largeish nebulous figure for site costs. This is their best opportunity to create a margin and hence your best opportunity to reduce that margin. Some of the costs included will never eventuate, so knowing what they are you can elongate then from the price. If you don't itemise they can just make it up.

I used to negotiate with bookies sometimes. If they just brought a horse in from 10 to 9 you could always ask for the 10 and get it.

Do your homework. Say you want a home loan with features like an offset account. Find an online bare bones loan that has a lower rate. Figure out what that means in term of dollars per year difference and ask the bank precisely what you get for the extra $x you'll effectively be paying.

Use silence. Play dumb in the sense that "you don't understand what you are getting for this fee or that charge" Be the one who asks the questions. If they ask you what your budget is try not to answer.

Be realistic and understand what they want. If you are a dick about it it won't get you far.

Understand the sales environment. Car dealerships can improve their casflow at the end of the month/quarter by making sales and getting kickbacks from the manufacturer. Best time to negotiate a deal.
