Analysis New Best 22 thread

Everyone knows that if you post the ACTUAL best 22, that's a boring post and people will just glaze over it.

Slide in a few ressies / players "trending" in the VFL, and watch your post get quoted and commented on.

No way you play Astbury forward. Very good defender and a nothing forward at this point. Elton played as well as Griffiths would on the weekend. More improvement and some goals would see him overtake Griffiths

first 2 games before being sent to the backline to learn the "defensive side" of the game, remembering he was selected as a centre half forward who was given the great mans number but yeah youre right he has done nothing forward playing out of the backline

Would love if we went into finals like this:

Grimes, Astbury, Vlastuin
Short, Rance, Houli
B. Ellis, Graham, McIntosh
Lennon, Griffiths, Caddy
Rioli, Riewoldt, Butler
Nankervis, Martin, Cotchin
Grigg, Conca, Prestia, Edwards

Emg/ Menadue, Castagna, Lambert

Obviously partly speculative without having seen Graham and Griffiths potentially never coming back, but it's a good looking side hey?

id like to go very aboriginal, especially around the goals :

c: edwards - cotchin - lambert (tagger)
hf: butler - jack - george
f: rioli - martin - bolton
ob: nankervis - vlastuin -prestia
i: Chol

em: stengle

chol, cantstandya, types are not aboriginal yet add flair non the less

the rational is dusty is a beast @ ff, rioli and bolton like whippets at his feet, butler and geroge have shown a bit and titch is a bit of a gun

grimes - rance - astbury
conca - mcintosh - short
edwards - cotchin - lambert
butler - jack - george
rioli - martin - bolton
nankervis - vlastuin -prestia

Butler isn't aboriginal... think you're thinking of Drummond

SHORT RANCE GRIMES
VLASTUIN (assuming he is back this week) ASTBURY HOULI
GRIGG MARTIN McINTOSH
CADDY CHOL EDWARDS
BUTLER RIEWOLDT RIOLI
NANKERVIS COTCHIN PRESTIA
MILES CASTAGNA B. ELLIS LAMBERT
EMRG: BOLTON CASTAGNA GARTHWAITE
COACH: CARACELLA
MAJOR CLUB SPONSOR: Back to CARLTON UNITED BREWERIES

Back Line:
B: Grimes Astbury McIntosh
HB: Houli Rance B.Ellis
INT: Short

For mine our back half has looked its best since these 7 have being played down there. Astbury and Rance continue to shut down their opponents while Grimes is capable of taking either a tall, mid sized or small opponent and shutting them down. This leaves Houli Brandon and Short to combine as the attacking rebounders. While McIntosh is starting to become the player he was towards the end of 2015. Hard at the contest, defensively accountable and when the opportunity present more than capable of taking off for a run and attacking like he did on Saturday.

Midfield:
C: Grigg Cotchin Edwards
R: Nankervis Martin Prestia
INT: Lambert Menadue

IMO the best midfield unit we've had in Hardwicks time. No doubt some will look at that statement and strongly disagree but this unit represents an even spread of accountability, ball winning ability, creativity and scoreboard impact. Grigg and Lambert are 2 of our best runners with Lambert looking comfortable in a run with role, while Grigg motors up and down the ground week after week racking up his 20 odd disposals and also hitting the scoreboard. Edwards is probably our most creative and quick thinking player his hands in tight are elite and he can also push forward and hit the scoreboard. Nankervis is what Maric was when he first arrived. That big protective ruckman who isn't afraid to get down and dirty and has good enough skills to hurt the opposition up forward or stop them in their tracks down back. Then there is the class of Cotchin who is getting back to the Brownlow medal type of form. Hunts the ball and the man, wins contests when the team needs him to step up and is growing as a leader. Prestia after a slow start is coming into his own. Increased training load no doubt helps, like Grigg and Lambert Prestia is a player who just motors. Not blessed with great pace but his work rate allows him to get to contests and burn off opponents. Then there is Martin, the once in a lifetime player who has taken his game to a whole new level this year. Playing more forward of centre he hurts the opposition with every possession as he looks to take the game on rather than get those easy 1-2 possessions. Finally I've thrown Menadue into the 22, some might say it's too soon, but the kid is starting to take steps and show a bit more each week that says he belongs. Long term I see Menadue as a wingman in the Issac Smith role who uses a combination of speed and endurance to hurt the opposition.

Forward:
HF: Castagna Riewoldt Butler
F: Rioli Caddy Bolton
INT: Vlastuin

Somewhat unconventional but if used like it was on Saturday night this type of forward line could prove effective. With reduced rotations the ability to rotate guys like Caddy Martin & Vlastuin through FF saves us rotations on the bench and keeps the opposition under pressure as not many defenders will be comfortable being isolated down deep with Martin, while Caddy has shown a number of times that he can be a multiple goal kicker up forward. The Fab 4 of Rioli Butler Castagna and Bolton puts opposition back lines under immense pressure. As Hardwick said on Saturday night sides are rushing their disposals while coming out of their back half as they hear the crowd noise rise as one of these guys starts closing in. This forces turnovers and allows us to have repeated I50 entries. As they say the best defense is a good offense and if the ball is spending more time in our F50 there is less time for the opposition to score.

Put it all together and the side is:

B: Grimes Astbury McIntosh
HB: Houli Rance B.Ellis
C: Grigg Cotchin Edwards
HF: Castagna Riewoldt Butler
F: Rioli Caddy Bolton
R: Nankervis Martin Prestia
INT: Short Lambert Menadue Vlastuin

Quite a solid line up only question is what happens if Nankervis gets hurt.

Lots of discussion for pretty much naming the weekend's side in position with Nick back in replacing Lloydy! :p

We definitely need Griff or another tall to come in and give Nank a chop out. Elton had a crack without success. Moore is more a third tall than a 2nd ruck. He is still a mile off but Chol may get the gig by default over the second half of the year just to give Nank a break.
