Blues aim at new forward targets

Jay Clark | March 15, 2009 12:00am

  • CARLTON has forecast an end to its reliance on spearhead Brendan Fevola, saying its forward set-up will be much different this season.
Desperate to be more unpredictable in attack, the Blues have revised the leading patterns of their forward targets over summer.
And up to three new faces, including recruit Mitch Robinson, will give the forward structure a fresh edge for Round 1.
Assistant coach Matthew Lappin flagged considerable change to the forward dynamics, adding Fevola's unselfish team-awareness had been a highlight of the pre-season.
"Through our first couple of games, his defensive pressure has been excellent and he has really looked to share the ball," Lappin said.
"He's one of the best forwards in the game, so we encourage him to take his shots on goal, but when he is selfless it always has a massive impact on our footy side."
Lappin said the Blues went to the draft table last year "wanting to find more avenues to goal" after coming unstuck at times for focusing too heavily on their star.
Fevola, 28 and in the prime of his career, kicked 99 of the team's 323 goals last season, far ahead of next-best contributors, Eddie Betts and Brad Fisher with 25.
Lappin said such a spread had to improve as Carlton set out to book its first finals berth since finishing fifth in 2001.
"It is a big fall away and we identified that," Lappin said.

"But we don't want Brendan to change.
"We've just done a lot of things over the pre-season, like training players to run around him in different patterns, either coming in from the side or around the back, to give us more options.
"In previous years we were too predictable going forward and it made it too easy for teams to defend.
"If we've got six dangerous forwards, opposition teams are going to focus on Brendan less and that should result in more opportunities where he can be one-on-one."
The quality of delivery to the forwards will undoubtedly improve - Carlton boasts one of the best midfield units in the competition, led by on-ball genius Chris Judd.
Robinson, 19, looks certain to make his AFL debut against the Tigers in the season opener, while livewires Chris Yarran and rookie Jeff Garlett are also a chance.
