Your credibility went right out the window there because it is well documented and widely known that James Fantasia was AGAINST drafting AngwinOriginally posted by brucetiki
Fantasia ... This was the clown that sucked us into getting the likes of David Gallager and Laurence Anguin.

I posted this in the other thread regarding Fantasia so I will paste it here as wellOriginally posted by brucetiki
Ok, I'll give you that one (I wasn't aware of that, my bad).
Still, he has done an ordinary job overall as recruiting manager. He has to go, or we're still going to have the same problems with developing youth regardless of whether we have Neil Craig or Terry Wallace or Harbijan Singh as coach!
Regarding your statement about developing youngsters, my #1 priority would be to get a development coach like Jonas in to develop those youngsters. I think its clear that we have talented youngsters but for some reason they have not developed as well as they should have. Wouldn't be quick to give Fantasia the sack just yet. See how he performs this year with his "new" network of scouts and make an assessment on his work next year.Originally posted by Stiffy_18
On James Fantasia, I would like see how he goes this year. I think his role is the one where he will cop a lot of flack when it might not be entirely his fault. Clear example of this is the Angwin scenario. A wise recruiter once said that "You're only as good a recruiting manager as the network of people you have around you". Personally, I don't think our scouts are of high quality and the club has started adressing this by appointing John Turnbull earlier in the year.
West AdelaideIt gets back to how much influence the coach has over recruiting decisions.Originally posted by Stiffy_18

I couldn't agree more. I have been saying this in the past as well when it comes to our pick at draft the coach has the final say on who he wants. Recruiting manager is there to offer his opinion but the coach makes the final pick.Originally posted by Wayne's-World

Wallace was talking about the North melbourne ruckman (forget his name) recently, stating he and the Bulldogs recruiting manager tossed over continuasly his merits V Sam Power. Wallace wanted Power, the recruiting manager wanted the NM ruckman.
Wallace got his way.
I would believe the recruiting manager brings the coaches recruiting options to the table, but ultimately the coach makes decisions in the 50/50 situations.
West AdelaideYour right it was Hale, and I think (stand to be corrected) Bulldogs chose b4 NM.Originally posted by Stiffy_18

I think you must be refering to David Hale because IIRC Sam Power was drafted in 2001 draft and David Hale was picked up by Kangaroos.
I still find that a bit of a worrying sign that Wallace went for a running player despite needing a mojor infusion of height in his squad. However, I think Hale might have been picked before Power in that draft. Happy to be corrected.
I thought that was the case.Originally posted by DaveW
Hale @ 7; Power @ 10 ... maybe they were discussing it before the Roos pick?
I have noticed a few times you having a bit of a dig at skinny kids and from the tone of your posts I sense you would always go for well build kids in the draft.Originally posted by Wayne's-World
The bulldogs did it again this year by ignoring talls and going for midfielders and again a skinny one in Farren Ray?
West AdelaideNow your on my favourie subject - how bad were the bulldogs in last years draft.Originally posted by DaveW
They picked up Rawlings in the PSD and Street in the trading period, so that added a bit of needed height.
With picks 1 and 4, I think it was just a matter of taking the best players available rather than picking a tall.
They went for a tall at pick 4 the previous year in Tim Walsh; which may not prove to be the best move.

I for one reckon Ray was a very worthy selection @4 because of his talent. He is a kid and a year or 2 in the weight room will see him have AFL body.
West AdelaideI think you aim to get the mix right, not always for well built kids, but yes definately a preference for the Brown typre of player.Originally posted by Stiffy_18

I can't say I agree. Kids at 17 or 18 are still developing and rarely are they build like tanks. I for one reckon Ray was a very worthy selection @4 because of his talent. He is a kid and a year or 2 in the weight room will see him have AFL body.
You pick kids on their ability not their weight. As long as they have the frame that enables them to put on weight you go for them. If they have the frame thats unlikely to fill out then you overlook them From what I have seen Ray has a frame that will fill out nicely with some weight training.

West AdelaideYeah soory add Alvey to my post .Originally posted by DaveW
Yeah WW - I felt the same way as you about the Rawlings deal at the time.
The Bulldogs effectively gave up pick 6, Mark Alvey & Nick Stevens for Rawlings & Veale.
I thought a high second rounder for Street was also strange. Although Street's been ok this year.

So by your reckoning we should have gone for Bill Morrison instead of Fergus Watts in last year's draft?????? Fergus was as skinny as they come when he was picked up in a draft while Morrison is a lad built like a tanks 193 cm / 95 kg and playing a physical type of game.Originally posted by Wayne's-World

Paul roos when discussing the loss of S. Stevens said that picking skinny KPP in th "hope" they'll fill out is a real gamble.
Skinny kids generally have not learn't to play a physical type of game (for obvious reasons).
We want some players in the team who inherently play hard physical football.
Take the Johnsons at Essendon. Can't imagine they were skinny juniors the way they play.
And I can't imagine Farren Ray ever playing a physical style of footy - can you![]()
