Another finals anomaly

selected passages from Paul Gough's - "Another finals anomaly"

At present Port Adelaide is top with West Coast in second, the Brisbane Lions in third and Sydney in fourth – all non-Victorian clubs whose respective home grounds of AAMI Stadium, Subiaco, the Gabba and the SCG would provide an enormous advantage come finals time where the home state side nearly always prevails.

Now presuming the top two sides win that would mean that for the preliminary final weekend the top-placed Power would again have home advantage at AAMI Stadium but the second-placed Eagles would have to play their preliminary final at the MCG to satisfy the AFL/MCC finals agreement.

But who would their opponents be?

Now presuming both Brisbane and Sydney rebounded to win their semi-finals this is where the benefit of finishing fourth as opposed to third kicks in because for the preliminary final week – where there is no second chance – they would go onto opposite sides of the draw.

That would mean the third-placed Lions would face the cauldron of AAMI Stadium against Port Adelaide while the fourth-placed Swans would suddenly find themselves playing West Coast at a neutral venue at the MCG and given their support in Melbourne would have far more of the crowd behind them.

Which path looks easier - playing a team in front of its own fans on home state soil or playing on neutral soil at the MCG?

Dunno why you called the thread, "new MCC finals agreement" because there is nothing new about it. It's the same agreement as last year.

But yes, I would prefer to play on the MCG with another interstate side, rather than playing a Vic side.

well i can't change it now so you gotta get a mod i guess..

but yes i must have been thinking of another article at the time i wrote the subject field

steve

a) what do you want the title to be?

b) It will really suck if we finish second and STILL, AGAIN get screwed over by the MCC agreement:( Its just bloody ridiculous, i honestly would cry if we earnt a PRELIMINARY FINAL at Subi and didnt get it:(

it would suck as eka says if we finish second and have a prelim in victoria. but then again you gotta look at the positives, the agreement has been like that for years, and also for us to finish second is such a big improvement & achievement in so little time.

And We've already been screwed over by it twice:) Finishing second is great, finishing second and not making the grand final isnt. Simply put Prelim at Subi 90% chance win, Prelim at MCG 60-80% Chance i reckon depending on Opponent

eka: Another finals anomaly

and i don't mind if its played in vic coz that means i get to see it... actually im not a member, so does that mean i can see em? or do i needa membership to see eagles finals games???

steve

You needed to be a member by Monday just been to get priority access at finals tickets i believe, but i dunno how it would work if it was in Melbourne as i dont think 30 000 eagles fans could afford to travel to Melbourne to see the game.

It will never be a sellout if there is an Eagles game in Melbourne (unless it's the grand final), so you will be able to walk up and buy tickets.

And the harsh reality is that it will definitely happen unless we finish first. I cant see us finishing first and I cant see a victorian side finishing first, so the Eagles are screwed, as per usual.

**** em though, let's just win the premiership anyway.

This agreement didn't cost you the flags in 1992 and 1994.... bottom line is the best team wins finals regardless of where they're played.

So you wont mind us having 22 home games next year, afterall the best team wins on the day regardless of where they're played...

A very simplistic view if I may say so - and if you argue I will involve Dan in the dispute and he will bury you under an enormous pile of statistics.

Good attitude and I also thought when reading in the West that Woosha seems happy enough with playing finals at the MCG.

The guys of 92 and 94 did it back then, and with our recent hoodoo gone of not winning in the East, I think the Eagles now can give the flag a shake regardless of where it's played.

The best team wins finals more often then not, regardless of where the game is played. The MCG is the home of football, the ground which holds the most number of people in this country, so of course the biggest games should be played there.

Well heck WCE better start losing now cause all we get for ginishing 2nd is the second worst first round priority pic. Finish 2nd, finish 8th we go to melbourne but 8th we get a better draft pic:)

*Note i would never want my side to lose when it could win but this just shows some of the hypocracy of the deal.

And how many people went to the "biggest ground" for the Essendon WCE Final last year which INVOLVED a Vic side, 37,000 do i hear anyone say?
yeah, definately a great argument for playing the game there:rolleyes:

Well in fact that game was played at Docklands and not the MCG, but I get your drift and back it 100%

Once again, thanks MCC, you are true champions...UP YOURS!

I daresay Stadium Australia would have the capacity to hold as many, if not more fans than the MCG.

That Scousey, is quite frankly the biggest load of crap. Teams win finals at home more than away - look at Brisbane's record at the Gabba for instance. Or the record in WA, where the Eagles are 4-1 in finals, but have only won one final away (in eight attempts) since 1994. In fact since 1994 I believe the record is 75% won by the home team - even more lopsided than H&A.

Anyway, if the crowd isn't going to be big, what does it matter what stadium its at. The entire crowd for last year's Ess v WC final could have fit at Subiaco no worries. Surely the more full the stadium the better the atmosphere, and 40,000 at the MCG isn't going to be particularly lively compared to 40,000 at Subiaco.

And finally, as to the MCG being the home of football - until 1987 its impact on WA football was approximately zero - if you live in WA the home of football is Subiaco Oval, in SA its Football Park.

Good Call

Thrawns comments about Stadium Australia also have merit.... with the construction going in at the MCG at the moment, would Stadium Australia hold more people? And if so, should all the finals be played there??

The whole idea behind the MCG holding more people etc is a joke. One of the interstate teams that deserves a home final in front of its members and supporters will instead have to go to the MCG and "host" a final against another team.

Last i checked, interstate teams also have members and supporters who want to see their team play in finals "LIVE".

The thing that irks me the most is that the AFL moan about how great our National Competition is - with games being played in the ACT, Tasmania and from next year the Northern Territory. Then they conflict themselves by signing a long term contract to RESTRICT teams to play finals in Melbourne (dispite the fact they may have earnt the right to play that final in their home state).
