AFL fines Demons youngster for betting on game

By Matt Burgan 5:33 PM Wed 12 August, 2009
MELBOURNE youngster Addam Maric has been fined $5000 under AFL player regulations for placing a $100 bet on Collingwood to defeat the Western Bulldogs in round 15.
The 19-year-old notified the League of his bet through club football manager Chris Connolly after attending a gambling education session conducted by the AFL Players' Association (AFLPA) last week.
The AFL confirmed in a statement that Maric and a friend were betting on racing at the time, when his friend asked him to place a bet for him on the match.
He did so without considering the AFL regulations that players cannot bet on AFL matches and the League has accepted Maric's version of events.
AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said the League had conducted a thorough investigation into the matter, which included analysing betting records.
He added the AFL had taken into account that Maric had immediately come forward upon realising he had breached competition rules.

Not good. No harm done really. Where do people see Maric in the future of the demons?

Made a mistake, admitted his mistake, copped the punishment, we can move on :thumbsu:

I think he has a massive future. He came to our club as a bottom age draftee and had the reputation of being the most accurate kick for goal in the history of the TAC Cup.

I see him possibly being similar to Mark LeCras (probably not as good though) as a small forward who makes the most of his opportunities. I think that once he develops his tank he will be able to spend some time in the midfield as well.

So far on what i have seen on him his decision making has let him down at times but i think that is something that will improve as he learns and develops.

Silly mistake. The rules are pretty clear so he probably deserves his whack, but did the right thing coming forward and I am tipping no one will at the club will make that mistake again in the near future

Bit shit none of his fine got suspended. Yeah alright you do the crime you get punished. But he actually came forward and admitted it unlike others who were just caught out.
