I love Pendles, ultimate professional, he makes time look like it’s slowing down.
But Pendles can’t mark overhead and isn’t a great set shot.
Only two knocks on his game. If he could do that we could sit him on the half forward line for the next 4 years!!!!!!

I agree - particularly the marking - although it'd be half back rather than half forward, I think, if he was decent in the air.

My old man (since passed) and a bunch of his mates basically watched every Pies game going back to the 60's, and saw every match of Daics career. They mostly all still romanticise the old players over the new, but even they pretty much all consistently agreed Buckley was clear and away superior to Daicos, the midfielder or forward version. Daicos was a great player, but he was never considered at a level amongst his peers the way Buckley was, even before his injuries, and even during the period he actually he made the biggest name for himself as a forward.

The idea that Daicos was levels above both Buckley and Pendles is a bit of revisionist romantic history IMO. I never saw early Daicos, but I certainly watched most of his later career as a young kid. Even I romanticise what I remember (vividly remember watching his 13 goals v the Bears), but Buckley's dominating influence consistently on a game to game basis was never matched by Daicos even pre injury. We are talking like Daicos was flawless, but he wasn't. It's not like he had much of a defensive game to speak of, and from what my dad's mates have said, a lot of his fancy stuff simply didn't come off as consistently the way you see it in a highlights package and he had his share of poor games, and the lack of defensive game or real toughness in those games wasn't as appreciated in an era where being tough and robust (lets say compared to one of his contemporaries in Leigh Matthews) was highly valued.

Daicos was hard as nails. Tagged every week, belted from pillar to post and he stood up. He not only won us games, he won us a Premiership. No Daicos in 1990 we don't win.

Just an incredible footballer. Talent wise, he was better than the blokes mentioned as he could do things consistently that no others in the league could even do occasionally.

But I really have to rate some other guys higher. Swan, Pendles and Bucks have all been genuinely discussed as being potentially the best player in the game at times within their careers - Daicos wasn't. The most incredible, the most skillful, mercurial, magical, but it was never discussed whether he was the best - he wasn't in that conversation.
Yet he is in the conversation of the best non key position forward in the history of the game. Season goal tallies of 97, 76,75, 58 and 52 attest to that. Name a better goal kicking forward in the history of the game who was a non key position player. We are talking Matthews when he went forward, Bartlett when he was forward and Daicos. Bartlett’s best season was 84 and his next best was 58. Matthews best season was 91. Both Bartlett and Matthews had extraordinary support for long periods of time by incredible teammates and sustained success in their teams. Daicos was one of a kind.

Daicos was a beautiful mover, silky midfielder but injuries ruined his chance at lasting greatness there. People forget he was almost finished, written off by many after recurring long term injuries. It is an absolute credit to the man that he came back and turned himself into a champion forward.
Another one with stress fractures in the feet, every AFL player should insist on the absolute finest footwear for his feet regardless of club policy / sponsorship.

Pendles isn’t in the same class as Daicos or Buckley, Swan was a better player than Pendles IMO, no knock on Pendles, one of our modern day greats but he never took a season by the throat like Bucks or Daicos did.
Scott Pendlebury in 2011 was as good as anyone I have ever seen.

Goal tallies aren't as high due to the era, but I think Eddie Betts deserves a mention in that group.

His two years in Adelaide (2015 & 2016) were really impressive. I think just one rung below Daicos, Lethal and KB. Better than Phil Matera, worse than Daicos et al.

Jesus Christ, I’m not usually one to bitch about off topic stuff, but last time I checked this was the Nick Daicos thread, not the “compare Peter Daicos to other players” thread….

Milne (61, 60, 67, 56, 56) and Betts (75, 63, 55, 51, 50) come to mind. But as someone else pointed out, not as prolific as Daicos.

Agree. Let’s get it back on topic, gang. This is getting silly now.

What if one compares Nick Daicos to Peter Daicos, then compare Peter Daicos to others?
Then it’s a Nick Daicos (once removed) comparison.
At least there is no mention of Josh Daicos.

Josh Daicos is like a better Luke Ablett, and Nick will be like GAJ.

Is that enough comparison for you?

And again

Jonbe54, haven’t always agreed with all of your posts, but in this case I have to say thank you, thank you, thank you. I could stop my self from reliving the joy of Daics. I had to watch all the clips several times each and read the article thoroughley. As I did, I was transported back and once again lived the sheer pleasure of watching him play.

Bucks clearly the best Collingwood player I've ever seen.

Swan above Pendles in my rankings, too.

Not as high numbers, but in an era with less goals. Eddie's 75 is the equivalent of 100 in that era. In the last decade, Josh Kennedy is the only bloke who has kicked more than Eddie's haul of 75. I think Eddie has a claim to be right up there with the best small forwards ever.

Which relates to Nick, because Josh Kennedy has the same name as his brother.

Love Eddie, but he’s not fit to tie the shoelaces of KB, Lethal and Daicos!

Not only were those three able to average more goals a game than Eddie, but they could do that and be dominant whilst spending periods through the midfield. All three kick 1000 goals if they spend their entire career forward (KB does it with decent conversion) and on pure talent are only matched by Buddy and Ablett Snr, IMO.

On that basis P Daicos is the most talented Pie I’ve seen and on topic I think N Daicos kicks 20+ goals next year if he plays forward of centre, but given how we’ll structure up off and on field I think they’ll start him down back.

Gotta laugh at the hatred of Nick from of one draft expert.

Supposedly “he’d much rather 25 touches and 1 goal through the middle and across half forward, than 40 touches behind the ball” from Nick.

Can’t have been too far behind the ball given the fact he been averaged well over 2 goals a game and about 35 touches in NAB league. And also kicked 2 goals to go with his 41 disposals in the challenge game…
