Just in case anyone doubted who the best player in the AFL was before Friday night Roo put the argument to bed. How StKilda managed to make the top four with Riewoldt out for most of the season is an amazing show of character by the group. The 2010 All Australian CHF will receive it on very false results as clearly none can match the influence of the big ROO.

Ablett is still the best. One week of finals isn't going to change that.

I think Ablett has him covered as best player..

Yep, his kicking lets him down.

It's what makes him somewhat mortal.

If his kicking was dead-eye, it'd be a no-contest as to who's the best .

But due to the fact he misses 'easy' ones every now and then it means it's not clear-cut.

He's easily the best player in the comp when he is on and kicking straight.

But if it's just his kicking that's stopping him (so you guys say), then couldn't Cloke pose a similar argument? (I'm not saying he could)

I mean, Cloke has taken I think equal most contested marks this year. Gets a lot of possies, does the gut running, presents, lays tackles, leads, double leads and triple leads, but misses easy shots.

Cloke has looked like the 07 Cloke this year but Riewoldt is better at most of the things you mentioned.

Riewoldt kicked more goals than Cloke this year in half the games that Cloke played. I dare say that puts the margin between the two in perspective.

Don't take my post as me saying Cloke is the best player in the comp.

FAR from it. Take it more as me saying Reiwoldt ISN'T the best player in the comp.

Right this second, I'd say Swan has more right to that title than Roo does.

To some extent but Collingwood rely on a large number of different avenues to goal while StKilda tend to be very reliant on just two players.

Riewoldt or Ablett. I always back Riewoldt because a gun key forward is normally better than a gun midfielder.

I have to have Swan in there now.

Right now I think it is those 3 players and then some daylight to the next group.

Is the reason they rely on a large number of differant avenues to goal because of Cloke inconsistency? Im sure if Riewoldt played at Collingwood hed still kick the majority of goals.

the best? hard to say

but there is no question that after his 2009 season and injury reduced 2010 season, that he has to be considered up there with the games best

In the past yes, but not so much this year...had to find other avenues when Roo went down, hopefully holds us in good stead.

True to som extent (although the names of many individuals who kicked a bag of 3 or more in Roo's absence escapes me) , but since he's been back in the side, StKilda have reverted to relying in Riewoldt and Milne to do the scoring.

As long as our guys are looking for the best option, if that's Nick, then so be it. When Roo first returned, especially against Collingwood and Hawks, they sought him out far to often. Our I50m targets have been far more varied since, and our spread of goal kickers has been quite good.

I can smell one of those sints /pies shitfights.

Powerful game...not interested if he misses a cpl of set shots when buggered coz his influence is huge. Nothing weird about a CHF running hot and cold with his kicking.

Great leadership at the death keeping the ball in tight at the fence...when the rain came in the 3rd it nullified his marking power but still found a way.

Saw him as the #1 player in the game last yr, and only injury prevents the same this yr.

Becoming a big finals player too...dominating big games and the only one he didnt i can remember now was the grannie...and he still went alright in that game but well held...created lots of chances that his smalls screwed up in the grannie.

His interrupted season is starting to make Pavlich's season look average.

Should have come to Sydney when he had his chance :thumbsu:
