It's a pity the bulldogs are so stubborn. If we could get pick #2 and a servicable player from carlton (which we'd then on-trade for a 2nd or 3rd round pick as anything they give is unlikely to be a ready made player worthy of our team) then with the Bulldogs very well documented KPP problems we could trade pick #2 and Morgan for pick #1 (and probably the bulldogs third or fourth round pick). We'd get Cooney, the bulldogs get the best of the Vic. talent plus a KPP they desperately need. For one position in the draft and probably a third round pick the Bulldogs get a KPP to help them AND still retain the best drafting position of any club. Port get the local boy and another pick or two from Morgan and on-traded Blues player that can be either used in the draft or to sweeten a deal for Guerra or another player and the Blues get the quality player for the midfield they so desperately need. It's clearly a win-win-win for all clubs involved that I can see.

We wont get Didak for Stevens.

In fact i hope the club isnt too stubborn about trading. A pick and Scotland would go down alright.

Balme said in the paper that they are looking around for another first round pick (hopefully in the first 5 or 6) to go with their pick 17 so it looks to me that if Stevens is going to Collingwood then it will be for 2 draft picks.

Pick 5 and Scotland would be ok. Pick 17 and Scotland would be rubbish.

There is no way Collingwood will get a top 5 pick with the "quality" of player they're hawking around. If they were offering anything decent we would take it.

This seems pretty simple to me. They want our player, we didn't chase theirs. We've given them our asking price, which is pretty reasonable I'd have thought and they've flatly rejected it. Fine. Move along, no more to see here.

I think you underestimate the value of Betheras ;)

Ch 9 said Carlton are offering #2 and Beaumont. If that's right I'd leap at it before they change their minds. The #2 pick alone would be acceptable but with a good middle-size player like Beaumont: he's nearly exactly the size and weight of Cochrane but experienced and an occasional goalscorer. Only problem, he's 28 in December. I'd sooner we could get a younger player but I doubt if they'd want to offload anyone younger, they're a pretty ancient bunch.

That would do. Why do we "need" Presti....? Surely that will only give Choco another excuse not to play the Thrust!

I'd rather pick 2 and Beaumont wouldn't be unhandy. Better than Presti & 17.

Another interesting thread.
Well I still think the same about Dew as I did before the 2003 season. P. Burgoyne obviously the gap between actual and potential ability shortened markedly and as for Stevens. Well enough has been said already.

Port did the right thing over the Nick Stevens saga, in most scribes opinions. Crackers Keenan, Mal Brown and Andrew Jarman all agree that Port may have lost out materially but were right to stick to their guns. Mal Brown goes so far as to state that Port could very well be winners in the message they have sent.

And the fact that there has been no gain in the trade market must mean that development of our younger talent must take a step forward. In particular the moves of Kane Cornes and Shaun Burgoyne to replace aging midfielders. Shaun has played some good games in the midfield. In fact, towards the end of the season I am convinced that the fact he could be moved there was the only reason he remained in the team. That and some of his defensive efforts. Like Andrew McLeod in his first years with Adelaide, we are seeing that although he can be brilliant in the forward lines, he can also be less than useless there.

I would expect at least half a season, maybe more from Steve Salopek, 15-20 games from Toby Thurstans and 5-10 from Brett Ebert.

More info on Nick Stevens

Had an outstanding debut season in 1998 after being drafted from the Preston under 18’s and was runner up for that year’s Rising Star award.

A solid midfielder with good skills. Steady for most of 2002, his form kicked up another level late in the year and he was a dangerous winger in the closing stages of the season.

In 2003 he became more of an ‘inside’ player as a result of the absence of Josh Francou with a knee injury. His stats of winning contested ball and centre clearances lifted dramatically.

He was at the centre of a huge controversy at the end of the 2003 season when he announced he wanted to cross to Collingwood. However, the Power refused Collingwood’s trade offers and Stevens was forced to enter the pre-season draft where he was secured by Carlton.

I wonder if Carlton will wear their white clash strip on Sunday. I hope it affects there game the way our predominately white clash strip affects ours :(
We do wear our clash strip for your home games.

Will add a little zest to Maggies v Tigers for those of us of the right vintage plus able to hold long grudges.
Happy he will be around for the ten year Premiership reunion!

OHH WAIT!

Well technically he was at the game*. I'd actually be interested in knowing how he got a ticket.
* In saying this I assume we all know he was there as a spectator.
