THE Brisbane Lions are baffled by an elbow injury that threatens to delay Nigel Lappin's return to football.
Lappin is unable to straighten his right elbow and a variety of treatments, including cortisone injections, has failed to free up the joint.
Lions physio Victor Popov was scheduled to carry out another examination last night.
The problem is nerve-related and the club will decide today whether stabilising the joint might allow it to heal naturally.
That would require the 257-game veteran to wear his arm in a sling.
"We can't work out what it is," a concerned Lappin said last night.
He is unlikely to play the NAB Cup opener against St Kilda on February 24 and his entire pre-season could be in jeopardy.
The cause of the injury is unclear. Lappin says he awoke one morning almost three weeks ago unable to move his arm.
Feeling returned to the extent he continued to train, but the pressure of marking footballs inflamed the area and it grew progressively worse.
Lappin missed the entire 2006 season with an ankle injury and his anticipated return has been a huge boost for a young side looking to make progress up the ladder after two lean years.
The triple premiership star ran out of time last year to make a return, but he was fully fit once the pre-season training began.
He continued to train uninterrupted over summer and his fitness levels were of such an impressive state, he was expected to make a huge impact on the field from the beginning of the NAB Cup.
The 30-year-old has a naturally wiry frame and the concern is that if he is forced to wear his arm in a sling for a week or two he could lose strength and size.
