Lappin injury setback

THE Brisbane Lions are baffled by an elbow injury that threatens to delay Nigel Lappin's return to football.
Lappin is unable to straighten his right elbow and a variety of treatments, including cortisone injections, has failed to free up the joint.
Lions physio Victor Popov was scheduled to carry out another examination last night.
The problem is nerve-related and the club will decide today whether stabilising the joint might allow it to heal naturally.
That would require the 257-game veteran to wear his arm in a sling.
"We can't work out what it is," a concerned Lappin said last night.
He is unlikely to play the NAB Cup opener against St Kilda on February 24 and his entire pre-season could be in jeopardy.
The cause of the injury is unclear. Lappin says he awoke one morning almost three weeks ago unable to move his arm.
Feeling returned to the extent he continued to train, but the pressure of marking footballs inflamed the area and it grew progressively worse.
Lappin missed the entire 2006 season with an ankle injury and his anticipated return has been a huge boost for a young side looking to make progress up the ladder after two lean years.
The triple premiership star ran out of time last year to make a return, but he was fully fit once the pre-season training began.
He continued to train uninterrupted over summer and his fitness levels were of such an impressive state, he was expected to make a huge impact on the field from the beginning of the NAB Cup.
The 30-year-old has a naturally wiry frame and the concern is that if he is forced to wear his arm in a sling for a week or two he could lose strength and size.

Re: Nigel Lappin

********!

We need John Safran to bathe in chicken's blood at the Gabba. We're deadset cursed.
I see you've placed a curse on Jughead BD.
Maybe your "bath in chicken blood with 12 vestal virgins dancing ceremony" has some merit.

Re: Nigel Lappin

Slightly more hopeful.

Lions confident of Lappin recovery

The Brisbane Lions say Nigel Lappin is on track to play in the opening preseason cup match against St Kilda next week, despite a mysterious elbow injury.

Lappin has a nerve-related injury that has affected his ability to straighten his right arm over the past few weeks.

The veteran midfielder is not expected to take part in the Lions' intra-club match in Brisbane on Friday night, but officials remain hopeful Lappin will be fit to play against the Saints in Cairns the following week.

Nope, too much talent to not be given every chance to get back on the paddock.

We'll already be elevating rookies for Voss, and possibly Chris Scott. Hooper doesn't look like playing any time soon, and Hadley, Garner, McDonald and Corrie are all returning from knee reco's and unlikely to play until well into the season.

How exactly would retiring Jughead improve this situation? Do you wash the jumpers or something?

Re: Nigel Lappin

Am so looking forward to seeing Nige play again, just love watching him.!
Hoping his injury is fine and after last year off ,we can get a few more years out of one of our all time greats.
Good luck Nige :thumbsu:

Re: Nigel Lappin

Any updates on his injury? Will he play some praccy matches before round one?

Lappin elbow injury on the mend

The Brisbane Lions have reported that midfielder Nigel Lappin's mysterious elbow injury is finally showing signs of improvement.
Lappin's preseason has been plagued by a nerve-related problem that has affected his ability to straighten his right arm, and Lions coach Matthews said Lappin and the club were relieved to see some recent improvement.
"When nothing is happening, you tend to get a little bit concerned, but finally the last week as I guess the medical opinion was, the nerve inflammation was starting to settle down," Matthews said.
"So hopefully that improvement will continue, so hopefully he'll be back with the group next week."

Re: Nigel Lappin

Pretty obvious isn't it ;)

Well, two reasons I guess :D

We ARE playing the lions next week and also his involvement/non involvement in round one is crucial to my dream team/supercoach
I'm very interested too, for the latter reason.

Re: Nigel Lappin

By the sounds Nigel is right to go for round 1. The hold up has been some kind of mysterious nerve problem with his elbow. Hopefully things come right. The good news is that it is not a repeat of any previous injury and he probably should be right for a full season. There is a bit of a risk with him though but he is a champ and I would expect a good season from Nigel given that he effectively had last year out of the game.

Re: Nigel Lappin

Interviewed on SEN last night. Said he'll definitely play a magoos practice match next Thursday night. That wouldn't guarantee him a round one spot 10 days later, but you would think he couldn't possibly be far behind that -- given no setbacks.

Anxious Brisbane Lions co-captain Nigel Lappin will put 18 months of torment behind him when he takes the field against the Hawks on Saturday night at the Gabba.

Lappin, one of the Lions' most experienced following the retirement of Michael Voss, broke his ankle against the Swans in round 20 2005, an injury which saw him watch the entire 2006 campaign unfold from the sidelines.

The 30-year-old champion midfielder's recovery was then interrupted by a mysterious elbow injury which ended his NAB Cup involvement and threatened to derail his regular season.

But he finally made his long awaited comeback in a training match last Thursday - with no ill-effects according to coach Leigh Matthews who reckons the only thing stopping Lappin is his famed lack of self-belief.

"He's always lacking confidence," smiled Matthews. "He can be best-on-ground and still nitpick about himself."

Lappin wasn't considered by some a natural choice as one of Brisbane's five joint captains, himself admitting at the announcement that he didn’t always enjoy some aspects of the role such as dealing with the media.

He even revealed to Matthews before Friday's afternoon training session he'd suffered a nagging headache all day - just 24 hours before the opening round clash with Hawthorn.

But the Lions coach was full of praise for Lappin, saying he's seen his leadership in a different light since pre-season training resumed last October and was eagerly anticipating the return of what he described as a 'really honest defensive chaser'.

"That's something that Nigel has really elevated over this summer," he said. "I think he's thought of himself as a leader this summer in absence of Vossy."

"He's a bit more visual and vocal around the group than he's ever been before and that was even given that he hadn't played - when you always feel a little bit out of it."

"He's a good player, very good defensively, a really honest defensive chaser. Nigel chases harder than almost any of those classy midfielders."

"He adds a lot of variation and class."
