Heat related irritability? Heat related bad judgement? Just don't give a damn? just don't think?

No bloody excuses for leaving kids locked in cars while you go into the shops. Stupidity doesn't even begin to describe it, on a hot day like today's in Melbourne.

Damn it makes me ropeable!!!

HUGE kudos to whoever it was that noticed these kids locked in cars and called the ambos etc.

I agree Danni, it makes me sick, if you don't want to take your kids in the shops with you, find a bloody babysitter & leave them at home, same as people who take their dogs with them in the cars in this heat & then leave them in the cars, cars are no place to leave people or animals in the heat.

I would like to see the punishment for people who do this, for them to be locked in a car for a while, see how they like it.

There was a bit more to this story mentioned on the news tonight.Three of the kids were in the one car & it was the 2nd time today the mother had left them in the car.

She should be charged with neglect.

Remarkably people with such stupidity appear to be the ones who are breeding most prolifically. The human race is truly getting stupider, what is it going to be like when these kids start procreating?

*sighs*

The biggest problem is that these parents will just be smacked on the wrist and then let go to continue parenting in their novel way.

Folks who do this are probably also guilty of proactive abuse upon their children, as well as negligent abuse. They need to be forced to answer for their actions.

As long as you leave the window wound down what's the problem?

What sort of kids are going to the shops with their parents during the school holidays anyway. I'm more concerned about the amount of kids inside shopping centres, don't kids go out a play with their friends during the school holidays anymore?

Any child who has to be attended by Amubulance due to parents neglect, should be taken immediatley into care. No ifs buts or maybes. No excuses. Some people should lose their rights to have their children. 3 children in hospital in the 1 family, twice in 1 day, totally disgusting.

Police rescue kids left in cars
By CHRIS TINKLER and KATE UEBERGANG
26jan03

A WOMAN was charged last night after three children were left in a car during record-breaking temperatures yesterday.

They were among seven children left in cars as Melbourne experienced its second hottest day on record.

The mercury soared to 44.1C at 4.10pm, stretching ambulance crews to the limit as the heat claimed dozens of victims.

Ambulance officers were outraged that seven children were left in cars, where temperatures quickly reached 60C.

Police rescued the three children – a one-month-old, an 18-month-old and a seven-year-old boy – from a car in Preston south Safeway carpark, Plenty Rd.

Officers, alerted by passers-by, believe the children had been locked there for more than an hour.

Last night the trio were being treated for severe dehydration in the Royal Children's Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said last night the woman had been charged with six counts, including reckless conduct endangering lives and theft.

Two youngsters, aged one and eight, were also rescued by ambulance officers from a car parked outside a Bentleigh library.

A six-year-old was freed from a vehicle in Balwyn and another six-year-old was found in Laverton.

All needed urgent treatment for heat exhaustion.

"These children could have died, there's no question," ambulance service operations manager Paul Holman said.

"I cannot believe how stupid some people are. This is negligence of the highest order, absolutely shocking.

"Within 10 minutes the temperature inside a parked car on a day like this would have been up to 60C."

A four-year-old boy was also recovering in hospital last night after a near-drowning at a public swimming pool in Melbourne's east.

Eight people had suffered heart attacks by 4pm – more than double the average – with seven dying.

More than 60 people required treatment for heat exhaustion.

Another 91 collapsed due to various conditions which may have been exacerbated by the heat, according to the Metropolitan Ambulance Service.

At Monash Aquatic Centre, Glen Waverley, the four-year-old boy was pulled unconscious from the pool at midday.

Paramedics resuscitated him and he was taken to Monash Medical Centre, where he was last night said to be in a satisfactory condition.

Three people also required emergency treatment after being plucked from the sea at Portsea, Safety Beach and Frankston.

Ambulance services were preparing for a busy night last night with extra staff being called in.

Cinemas and swimming pools were packed as people tried to escape the heat. But for many at the Jam Factory in South Yarra, there was no respite, with screenings abandoned after the air conditioning failed.

Many normally thriving centres across the city, including Southgate, resembled ghost towns, with shops without air conditioning closing early.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Ken Dickinson confirmed yesterday was Melbourne's hottest day for more than 60 years.

The hottest, when it hit 45.6C, was Black Friday – January 13, 1939 – the last time vast areas of the state's northeast were ablaze.

Many other parts of the state, including Victoria's hottest spot Avalon, where it reached 46C, and Tullamarine with 44.4C, had record days.

A high of 30C is expected in Melbourne today.

They should be inside when it's 45 degrees.

With the window wound down - if the car's parked in the shade it may not be too bad, but if it's in the sun the kids will still be getting roasted. They're still under metal and glass with the sun shining on it; so the temperature in the car is still much hotter than outside.
And if the windows were up, leaving kids in the car in those sort of conditions is child abuse.

Zombie if you leave the window wound down the kids are in some danger of being abducted.

Leaving six and seven year olds on their own like that is not acceptable. Almost all simply do not have the facilities to cope should an emergency arise.

Case in point: the older kids (six/seven) could have unlocked the doors and opened them but they simply did not have the ability to discern that it was OK to disobey their parents and get out of the car in this case. In some cases they would not have even know how to open the doors.

what a series of stupid stupid comments. so you're more concerned about the number of kids in shopping centres than the possibility of kids dying in a hot car?

idiot

I can't believe this woman tried to justify leaving her kids in the car.

Mother stands by leaving kids in car
By PAUL ANDERSON
27jan03

A MOTHER who has admitted to leaving her young children in a car in searing 40C heat on the weekend says she left them because she did not want to wake them.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, yesterday claimed the incident had been blown out of proportion after she left her youngsters to go shopping for milk and cigarettes.
She has admitted that while in the Preston South Safeway supermarket she stole a pack of nappies.

The woman, 32, has been charged with several offences over the Saturday afternoon incident, including conduct endangering persons and theft.

A Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokesman said the children - a one-month-old boy, 19-month-old girl and seven-year-old boy - were severely dehydrated when taken to hospital.

But the mother disputes this claim, along with police allegations she shopped twice throughout the hot day for periods of at least half an hour.

"They said my children were dehydrated. They were a bit warm but nowhere near dehydrated," the woman told the Herald Sun.

"I asked my seven-year-old to watch them (his younger sister and brother) while I run in and grab some cigarettes and milk. My door was open, the windows were down."

The woman said when she came out of the supermarket security guards and a policewoman had taken the children from the car.

The mother and three children were taken to Preston police station where they were met by Department of Human Services officers.

"They would not let me see the kids. I kept telling them the baby needs to be breastfed," she claimed.

The children were then taken to the Royal Children's Hospital.

"I didn't want to wake them," the woman told the Herald Sun. "I don't agree with what I did but I thought it was best I didn't wake them.

"My seven-year-old's a responsible young boy. I felt quite confident with him watching them for this short time of their life."

A DHS spokesman said the children had been placed in foster care pending a hearing in the Children's Court tomorrow.

"The Department of Human Services is concerned and urges parents not to leave children unattended in cars," he said. "Leaving them without any supervision at any time is something we view extremely seriously.

"In the past, children have died when left unattended for as little as half an hour.

"Cars have also been stolen when children have been left unattended in them."

The woman was bailed by police and to face Heidelberg Magistrates' Court on March 7.

couple of years ago in perth i was walking from my car to the shop entrance and passed a car with 2 kids in the backseat. at least 40 degrees, middle of the day and not even an open window (not that that would be good enough anyway). tried to get security to smash the window but they wouldnt have a bar of it so i just waited for the parent(s) to arrive. turns out both the bloke and his missus had gone in to do the weekly shopping. launched into them both, heaping ***** on them for being idiots - woman told me where to go and the bloke tried to deck me. need a licence for dogs and cars but any idiot can have a kid.

This reminds me of the asian woman last year who was playing the pokies in like, Glen Waverley or something when her baby died in the car! What did i recall the ambulance officers saying, basically, that the baby was like a cooked chicken.

From the quotes here it looks like this lady had really bad speaking skills or wasnt an Aussie?

That quote, although its a good one, came from a movie called Parenthood - a Keanu Reeves line!

i would have smashed a window, as well as a rear tail light (just for the heck of it), and left a note saying "That's ok, no need to thank me". You get the satisfaction without the confrontation.

It's great to see there are still some people around that are willing to get involved to help someone they dont' know.

You have to wonder how many ppl walked past or drove past and did nothing. Just like the man who died on the footpath of a main road in Brisbane yesterday (heart attack they think), his body lay there for 2 hours and was covered in ants by the time someone stopped to see if he was ok.

Thats absolutely ****ed Danni. People maybe mistook it for that he had OD'd or something, thats the only thing i can put it down to? People are too suspicious these days!

When i was working in St Kilda Road, i used to walk to my friends place in South Yarra - walking up Toorak Road i tripped over a crack in the concrete and fell, landing directly upon my knee and disjointing my knee cap - you can imagine the pain, i could NOT get up at all. A lady saw it happen and walked straight past me. Had i not been choked up with pain i would have screamed blue murder at her!! I mean i had a business suit on for christs sake, its not like i looked like a druggie!

I feel guilty when i drive past a broken down car - some people just have no conscience!! (sp?)

dum dum parents

Something needs to be done to people like this.

Tie her tubes, lob his balls, put birth control in suspect suburbs water. The gene pool is too dumb at the moment.

Mother loses custody of kids left in hot car

A 32-year-old woman accused of leaving her three young children in a car during 44-degree heat on the weekend lost custody of them in a court hearing on Tuesday.

A Children's Court magistrate said the three children - a one-month-old boy, a 19-month-old girl and a seven-year-old boy - were lucky to be alive after hearing they were twice left outside Melbourne supermarkets in searing heat last Saturday.

The West Heidelberg woman, who cannot be named, is facing six charges over the incident, including reckless conduct endangering life and theft.

A lawyer for the Department of Human Services (DHS) told the court the woman left the two youngest children for up to 35 minutes with the windows fully wound up outside Northland Shopping Centre, shortly before 2pm.

Shoppers alerted security guards who broke into the car to rescue the children before an ambulance was called to treat them for dehydration.

The two toddlers looked grey and appeared "out of it" according to witnesses, the lawyer said.

After the children recovered they were allowed to leave with their mother but two hours later a "similar incident" occurred outside a nearby Preston East supermarket.

Initially the woman argued with a supermarket employee who had noticed the car parked in a disabled car space with her three children inside.

The woman then drove off and went around to the back of the supermarket where she again left the children, the court heard.

She is accused of stealing a packet of nappies before running out of the store and driving away.

"The fact the children were left in the car at all, whatever the extent of it, shouldn't have happened and it's lucky the children survived," the magistrate said.

Police and DHS workers who met the woman as she returned home that night assessed her as affected by drugs and concluded she had consumed almost half the 50 tablets from a recently-obtained bottle of valium.

The 19-month-old girl was bleeding from severe nappy rash.

Through her lawyer the woman disputed some of the allegations and opposed the DHS application to place the two younger children with their maternal grandmother and the seven-year-old boy with his father.

The father of the two younger children, described in court as an alcoholic, also opposed the application while audibly trading recriminations with their mother.

Both parents were granted three hour-long access visits each week until the matter returned to court on February 18.

The woman remains on bail to face criminal charges at Heidelberg Magistrates Court on March 7.
