Oh yes this tournament's gonna be a success:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/content/current/story/499653.html

Hot Spot will not be part of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) that will be used during the 2011 ICC World Cup.
In October 2010, the ICC had announced that the Hot Spot cameras would be used in the semi-finals and final of the World Cup.
However on Saturday it was confirmed that, "the supplier of the Hot Spot technology advised that it was not willing to supply its cameras for the tournament so, accordingly, they will not be used at any stage in the tournament.

You're the International Cricket Council. SPEND SOME F***ING MONEY!

Umm okay? Hot Spot is basically the only thing that can overturn the decisions (not including hawkeye). It's almost impossible to tell if there's been a thin edge with the 2D images.

Piss poor decision from the ICC.

Not that concerned by this tbh. I thought it was ridiculously unreliable during the Ashes.
Or that players aren't the all knowing authorities on umpiring decisions they think they are?

Will be interesting to see how this works,

Realistically any edge that goes to the keeper could be referred and how could they be 100% sure it was out

Considering they're the host broadcaster for the World Cup, you're probably right. Stingy bastards.

It will be awesome if they get screwed because of it.

From the article linked in the OP:

"The Hot Spot infrared cameras form part of military hardware used in jetfighters, tanks and warships, and they fall under the category of restricted equipment which needs a temporary export licence from the Australian Defence Department whenever they are taken out of the country."

I didn't know that... maybe it makes some more sense as to why the supplier doesn't want to get involved.

As Tony Grieg said, if India make the final I hope Sachin Tendulkar is wrongly given out and then they lose. Would be rather humorous.

They've used it in England and South Africa, why can't they do it for the 2nd biggest competition in cricket?

You've got it wrong. In order to overturn a decision, they need to be 100% it's not out. Not the other way around.

Dunno - England and South Africa are not India, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh. I get the feeling that there is some concern over the security of the equipment in those countries, and that the people in the defence department are going to make it very hard for it to happen regards the export licences. So much so the company has decided not to bother.

I've got no evidence to base that on of course, but that's my gut feeling. The fact that it is a big tournament is neither here nor there to them.

not really getting the ICC blame here...? the supplier is the one who doesn't want hotspot at the WC for whatever reason

and the BCCI doesn't have anything to do with it (and it's hawkeye they have a problem with anyway)

The supplier may want to be paid for providing it instead of just handing it out as a freebie.

Have a bad feeling this is going to be a very poor world cup, not in the best part of the world to host the world cup, volitile, poor countries. Doesn't sound too productive of a good world cup, especially if the home teams get kicked out of the competition early.

Would be good to have all possible technologies to make the game better available, but it's just not to be.

That would be one of the best things that could happen to world cricket.

If that happens, the Indians will have a whinge and want DRS in every international game and also want the ICC to pay for it.

And being the p*ssweak pushovers they are, the ICC will comply and we'll have standard rules/equip allround (hopefully).

I for one can not wait to watch games played in empty stadiums:thumbsu:

Most of the Indian games are sold out and there will be general interest across the rest. I look forward to every stadium being filled here for games such as Bangladesh v Ireland in 2015 when 5000 people hardly made the Sri Lanka v Australia ODI game.

Hotspot has been used in India before for the 2009 Champions League so not entirely sure what the problem is.

Biggest problem; the thing goes for way too bloody long.

have also read that the hotspot cameras, aside from expenses are also short-ish in supply and possibly not easy to constantly set up. these things aren't made in a lot of places and it could even be that there simply isn't enough of them.

plenty of other things will ruin it if they go wrong. the WC fun police will have their hands full in india... so long as the locals aren't gouged to the point of non-attendance.
