The darkest moments in Eagles history have coincided with the lack of tall forwards. This occurred prior to the 92/94 Premiership Years and more recently at the end of Malthouses era and Judge era. Other than Peter Sumich and Ross Glendenning we have a poor record of developing Tall Key Forwards. No doubt Some bright sparks will bob up with some other examples. However, the point is any really good team needs a couple of tall focal points.

Examples of good teams where this is evident are:

Essendon - LLoyd and Lucas
Collingwood - Rocca and Tarrent
Brisbane - Brown and Lynch
St Kilda - Reiwoldt and Gherig (Aaaaaaaaagh!)

You get my drift.

I understand that McDougall and Staker have been given every opportunity to develop. I know that long term they have a good chance of coming up. In the meantime they have undeveloped bodies for AFL Football. At best they are gaining invalyuable experience and at worst they could end up with career threatening injuries.

I hope Paul Johnson has not been classified into the Stevan Jackson, Brendon Fewster or Brett Spinks category. That is tall and cumbersome, good at WAFL level but not quite lithe enough for AFL CHF.. I thought yesterday was an ideal opportunity for him to play CHF. He would provide a contest in the packs to bring the ball to ground for our Crumbers. Woosha gave this strategy an after thought when he moved Lynch up forward. This robbed Peter to play Paul.

Its difficult to see upfield when you are watching TV. But when Embley got caught at Half Back he was looking up field for a lead. This is a classic Eagles situation. There was nobodyt pressing hard up field. There should have been two options. Johnson pushing hard at the true CHF and on a flank pushing up the wing should be Staker on a lead. As Langdon and Mitchell White have done successfully in the past. Staker and Langdon dont have the strenghth overhead for the key CHF Role.

Next week we should see Gaspar at CHF with Jako at FF. I think Mc Dougall should be given a rest now to gather his confidence. I think Staker needs to be persisted with but be used in the role of a Langdon/White as detailed. This structure would give Sampi and Matera every opportunity to crumb goals in addition to the midfield pressing forward to assist.

I know that the injuries to Gaspar, Gardiner, Jakovich and Hansen havent helped our Tall Forward Options. But leaving Johnson out just shows no respect to how important CHF is in Football.

GO EAGLES!

You forgot Polak/Longmuir
Lets not forget a decent combination backline either

McPharlin/Hadrill are the best in the buisiness at the moment.
Lepitch/Micheal up there as well.

Its all about the spine folks.
Midfield is great and all but as much as the lions midfield is talked up its their key position players that dont get the credit they deserve.
The likes of Lepitch.Micheal,Brown and Lynch play just as vital a role as the lions midfield.
Eagles are half way there.
Trading Morrison/Braun and Wirrapunda at the end of the year for someone like Hay will go a long way to fixing your problems.
Otherwise suck it up and spend some years down the bottom, your midfield is on fire but it wont fire forever, get the players while your a premireship hope.

Firstly, I wish that your first statement was true however Embley was simply not switched on. He got caught right in front of me and he just thought that he could burn Favola off. Instead of looking up he was trying to be clever. He had two leads coming at him on the wing but all he wanted to be was take a bounce.

As far as Johnson thing is concerned I supprt your comment 100% its time for him to be given a go, its as simple as that.

gaspar would have to come into the team ahead of johnson.

i totally agree with one eye. i think the club has been gutless when it comes to trading, unlike the dockers who have gone hard and strong in the trade period. we seem content to stick with the 'goers' who will never be classy. (im thinking of lynch and glass).

we have a midfield that is stocked with class players, we have 4 ruckman but about 4 others that are tall enough to do the job. and we have continually neglected the need for key forwards/ backman. i used to have faith in gasper but i dont think we can trust him to get up, if he does it will be a bonus in my eyes.

i wish the club would grow some balls and trade braun or morrison or cox and a first round pick to get a quality KPP player to the club.

i know some fellow supporters disagree but this is the only way we can win the games that matter.

No respect for CHF? I think Optus Oval is one of those grounds where you just bypass CHF.

Don't rate Johnson at all, he wouldn't have given us anything against Carlton.

I agree about Embley being played in defense, it isn't really his go.

Thank you so much Sabre for your insightful comments. I'm sure we will trade Braun and Wirra for an injury prone Hay. Just how many games has he played in the last couple of years ??And don't even mention Hadrill/McPharlin in the same sentence as Leppitsch/Michael. You purple people do tend to overrate your own.

How can you knock Hay for being injury prone in the same sentence as Braun and Wirra without pointing out hte injuries that have plagued their careers.
Currently Braun,Morrison and Wirrapunda are doing jack, and will not be missed especially if you recieve a defender of the quality of Hay.
And if McDougal is taught how to be courageous (if that is at all possible) and not hear footsteps then your side is well on its way.

The key position players your waiting to develop will never develop iinto the players you require and drafting youth will take too long. Trade some of your excess victorian midfielders for a quality key position player.

We need someone at CHF.

I still think MacDougall should be starting there this weekend.

Brent Staker is not, and possibly won't ever be, a true KPP. He has a boys body. And we won't really know for a few years whether he is going to put on the bulk or not.

That's not to say he won't be a good footballer - i think he'll be a sensation. But he just won't be a CHF.

Gaspar is the most talented CHF we have in the team but i still have doubts we can rely on him getting over his injuries permenantly. And i think he's still probably more of an assett in defence for our team just at the moment.

Perhaps in the future he will be our future CHF.

Or perhaps maybe Gardiner will be our CHF and leave the rucking to Cox.......
