Senior List
West Coast ended the trading without coming to an agreement to gain or lose any players for 2002. With this year's draft tipped
to be chock-full of talent, Eagles management are clearly opting for the long-term view.
While this might mean another long year for Eagles fans, the prospect of
picking up some good young talent is an exciting one.
The only player who seemed to really spark the Eagles interest was Brisbane's
Des Headland, who expressed his desire to return home to W.A. The Lions,
however, weren't willing to accept anything less than a first round draft pick for
him. West Coast made it clear from the outset that the number 3 and 6 picks
weren't for sale, leaving a three-way deal as the only possibility.
While there was some interest from the east over Chad Morrison, nobody it
seems was interested enough to offer a first round pick, which the Eagles could
then have on-traded for Headland.
With the rich draft coming, trading all round was generally quieter than it has
been in recent years. Most clubs traded only a couple of players, while
Collingwood joined the Eagles in not doing any deals at all.
With no players gone through the meat market, the Eagles will need to wield
the axe to some extent to make room on the list for the drafted newcomers.
Recently, EaglesFlyingHigh gave our call on the trade possibilities, and the last
week's activity shows how much we know! (At least they considered offers on
Morrison like we suggested!)
So, based on those fairly dodgy predictions, here are the players we think
could be shown the door:
David Antonowicz - Had a poor run with injuries this season,
which restricted his chances to play a senior game. He's been
on the Eagles list for four years now, and played just three
games - not a good position to be in when the axe is being
wielded.
Scott Cummings - His third year at the Eagles was by far his
worst, kicking just 16 goals. Sometimes it's hard to tell if he's
even interested in playing, and it's difficult to see another club
being interested in him. It could be the end of the road for the
1999 Coleman Medallist.
Andrew Donnelly - Injury problems didn't help, but he never
got a look-in this year and is not likely to get one again.
Greg Harding - Picked up from the Dockers to add
some experience to the backline, but only ended up
getting a run when the injury list was at it's worst. He won't
have happy memories of his time at the Eagles - the nine
games he played were all losses, by an average of 79 points.
Adam Hunter - Had a couple of chances to make himself a
permanent part of the team, but couldn't find the consistency to
do it. Maybe someone will take him in a trade, but he's out of
time with us.
Dean Kemp - The great Dean Kemp. It's all been said, really.
But in case you missed it, it's here, here, and here.
Ashley McIntosh - They'll probably keep him on
because he is an Eagles legend. But unless he can
demonstrate an ability to play a whole game week in week out,
it's time to hang up the boots.
David Sierakowski - Recruited from the Saints, he lasted
about five minutes into the first game before doing his knee. We
should just cut our losses with this one.
Ryan Turnbull - I had him pegged for retirement after
he struggled to get a game this year, but he's thrown a spanner
in the works by winning everything in the WAFL - the Sandover
and Simpson Medals plus a premiership. If he reckons he can
go on, it's a bit hard to argue with him after that.
Ben Cousins - Not really, just checking to see if you're paying
attention!

) and it would be unfortunate for us if he doesn't grow up a bit. Maybe if we gave him a game he might see exactly how far of AFL level he is, and put him in his place a bit, might help him!
