West Coast ended the trading without coming to an agreement to gain or lose any players for 2002. With this year's draft tipped
to be chock-full of talent, Eagles management are clearly opting for the long-term view.

While this might mean another long year for Eagles fans, the prospect of
picking up some good young talent is an exciting one.

The only player who seemed to really spark the Eagles interest was Brisbane's
Des Headland, who expressed his desire to return home to W.A. The Lions,
however, weren't willing to accept anything less than a first round draft pick for
him. West Coast made it clear from the outset that the number 3 and 6 picks
weren't for sale, leaving a three-way deal as the only possibility.

While there was some interest from the east over Chad Morrison, nobody it
seems was interested enough to offer a first round pick, which the Eagles could
then have on-traded for Headland.

With the rich draft coming, trading all round was generally quieter than it has
been in recent years. Most clubs traded only a couple of players, while
Collingwood joined the Eagles in not doing any deals at all.

With no players gone through the meat market, the Eagles will need to wield
the axe to some extent to make room on the list for the drafted newcomers.

Recently, EaglesFlyingHigh gave our call on the trade possibilities, and the last
week's activity shows how much we know! (At least they considered offers on
Morrison like we suggested!)

So, based on those fairly dodgy predictions, here are the players we think
could be shown the door:

David Antonowicz - Had a poor run with injuries this season,
which restricted his chances to play a senior game. He's been
on the Eagles list for four years now, and played just three
games - not a good position to be in when the axe is being
wielded.

Scott Cummings - His third year at the Eagles was by far his
worst, kicking just 16 goals. Sometimes it's hard to tell if he's
even interested in playing, and it's difficult to see another club
being interested in him. It could be the end of the road for the
1999 Coleman Medallist.

Andrew Donnelly - Injury problems didn't help, but he never
got a look-in this year and is not likely to get one again.
Greg Harding - Picked up from the Dockers to add
some experience to the backline, but only ended up
getting a run when the injury list was at it's worst. He won't
have happy memories of his time at the Eagles - the nine
games he played were all losses, by an average of 79 points.

Adam Hunter - Had a couple of chances to make himself a
permanent part of the team, but couldn't find the consistency to
do it. Maybe someone will take him in a trade, but he's out of
time with us.

Dean Kemp - The great Dean Kemp. It's all been said, really.
But in case you missed it, it's here, here, and here.

Ashley McIntosh - They'll probably keep him on
because he is an Eagles legend. But unless he can
demonstrate an ability to play a whole game week in week out,
it's time to hang up the boots.

David Sierakowski - Recruited from the Saints, he lasted
about five minutes into the first game before doing his knee. We
should just cut our losses with this one.

Ryan Turnbull - I had him pegged for retirement after
he struggled to get a game this year, but he's thrown a spanner
in the works by winning everything in the WAFL - the Sandover
and Simpson Medals plus a premiership. If he reckons he can
go on, it's a bit hard to argue with him after that.

Ben Cousins - Not really, just checking to see if you're paying
attention!

On Sierrakowski and McIntosh, since our list doesn't have to be cut drastically this year due to the lists being increased again, we may as well keep them one more year to see how they fare. It wouldn't be really fair to Sierra to cut him before he could show us anything would it? On Milli, he might just have something left and even if he's pretty much gone, he can give the young defenders lessons at training. Agree with everyone else though.

Vis

PS I say cut Turnbull, sure he won a lot of stuff in the WAFL, but we don't really need him anymore, Gardiner is our #1 ruckman and Dean Cox our #2. Gaspar, Sierra and McDougall can all pinch hit if absolutely necessary and Jako can roam the grounds on throwins. He was a service to our club but now his time is up.

spot on as usual Vis, my thoughts exactly.

As for who should be delisted... IMO our weakest area is the spine, and although McIntosh is no thte full back he was a season or two ago, I still rate him as a useful forward (always has been). Could add a few years to his career as a "re-juvenated" forward.

Siera? I was sceptical when he was recruited, even more so now, but he does deserve a chance. Although that doesn't mean I think he should be given the whole season to show his talents if he has none! Donnelly the same, anything to add a bit more to our forward line, although not at the expense of the development of Haynes etc.. so maybe it is time for him to go...

One player who I think has to go though, and it is only a matter of time... Trent Carroll, he has been terrible at times throughout the season, even worse than the average Eagle.

I have been suitable impressed by most of our youngsters though. The development of Callum Chambers has been questionable though, has shown some good signs, but has also been a bit iffy at stages.

Turnbull - gone.

rant over

thegur

can someone please give me an update on the progress of McDougall?? He should be one of the players filling the spots up the spine ... along with Polak ... Gaspar ..... Glass ... the future does look alright.

Donnelly retired through injury months ago.

McIntosh cannot physically play CHF at AFL level any more. His knees do not permit him to turn sufficiently. IMO he can play in one mof two positions where straight line movement is the key -FB or FF.

Carroll improved over the season and needs to improve again next year, but should be given a chance.

I thought Carroll was actually reasonable this season. Just the fact that he was delisted by Freo seems enough to make some WC supporters hate him instantly. Give the guy a fair go, he was a very good young player and probably wasn't developed properly at Freo. He's only now starting to find his feet in the WC defence so give him another season (or more if he's good enough) to show us what he can do.

In all fairness Carrol was pathetic in his first few games. He was then dropped and came back a much better player. Perhaps it wa an attitude thing or just settling down but certainly I would keep him.

I don't believe McIntosh should be used in a key position any more. Really, we need to get our young uys into playing where they will, with Mille and Roo as supporting roles. As such, i don't know about Jako and Gaspar, will we train Gaspar up for CHB or CHF. I believe for now our guts should be
Glass
Jako
Kerr
Gaspar
Buszan

not bad, with Gaspar probably going to CHB when Jako retires, he would get some valuable experience playing at CHF, but filling in at CHB occasionally.
Or should we put Gaspar to CHB straight away and have Jako at CHF, which we;ve tried and hasn't worked properly.
I am unsure at this stage

On McDougall:

The reason he wasn't given a game at AFL level this year was yes, because of injuries, but that is not the only reason.

The other reasons are as follows:

*He is as immature as a 10 year old.
*He Doesn't take the AFL thing seriously, believing he can rock up to training when he feels like it.
*He has no respect for the senior players, which in turn means they have no respect or time for him.
*He is as scrawny as the young kids playing under 16's.

This has come from a good source, and unless he changes his attitude he will not make the big league, and that will be another early draft pick the eagles have wasted!

Yes, I heard the same about him, I think he is a bit full of himself and the sooner he gets over himself he may be good for the team. He has skill(and he knows that too well:D) and it would be unfortunate for us if he doesn't grow up a bit. Maybe if we gave him a game he might see exactly how far of AFL level he is, and put him in his place a bit, might help him!

Line him up at fullback with Wilson at FF. That will teach him to respect his elders. I really do hope he pulls his head out and starts playing good football. Our spine for the future is nearly complete, now all they need is the experience:

FB: Glass
CHB: Gaspar
R: Gardiner, Cox
CHF: McDougall
FF: Polack, Buszan

Frodo was on the money when he said Carroll was woeful early in the season but he was dropped and came back a different footballer. He is still young and i think he will develop into one of our better defenders next year. He was great in the latter part of the year.

McDougall is starting to piss me off, either he buckles down and starts to play well or we should just cut him loose. Knowing our luck, he will get cut from the Eagles realise what an idiot he has being and then get picked up by Freo and because he doesnt want to cut again, try really hard and become Wayne Carey!! :D

If this is true about McDougall, he needs a good kicking. This is the job of the coach and the football staff. Once this group is finalised, I expect that to happen. And if I were Woosha, I would want to pick my own staff to make sure that happened.

Visro - spot on with your comments there! McIntosh came forward in a few games and was able to kick some goals. Tall forwards who can kick goals are always hard to find, and that makes the opposition find a tall defender to play on him. Sierakowski would feel robbed if he was delisted, although with now 2 or 3 knee reconstructions his best football is definately behind him.

Age is against Turnball - he can't play good footy consistantly in the AFL to be assured of a spot in our squad.
