If there's anyone on here who can remember the world before social media, can you please explain how children managed to interact with one another?

It must have been a horribly bleak and lonely existence. Maybe they even had to gasp go visit each others' homes, meet up outdoors, kick a footy around the park, ride their bikes to the beach...

CIvilisation managed to survive without social media right up until 20 years ago, and if anyone wants to run the argument that it is a better world now because of YouTwitFace etc. then good luck with that.
They use it to meet up. They don't just sit at home all day interacting via their phones.

They will just have to switch to other apps that aren't banned like Whatapp etc and have giant groups of kids they know.

Sorry to hear that buddy.

It's a stupid law that infringes on peoples liberties.

It's the parents' job to regulate their childrens/teenagers social media and technology use, not the government.

Parliament needs to get their noses out of peoples business

The ones who think this is a great idea are the same ones who used a tablet as a pacifier.

pr0n sites aren't social media sites.. Stay on topic. This isn't a law targetting every subjective "bad" platform out there.

Of course it's not highly enforceable but what your missing is that it forces big social media companies to put policies in place which they couldn't give two shits about previously.

It is better than nothing and does make it more inconvenient. "Oh no, I don't have social media how will I contact my friends?" Please...
If a site serving searchable video to cater to your tastes isn't a social media platform then why is youtube copping the ban?

One could argue that is highly social form of media...

Believe it's targeting YouTube shorts which is essentially TikTok and Reels.

I'd be all for this - but social media when I was that age just created a social hierarchy and structure that I simply couldn't comprehend. It forced us all to create dual identities all the while growing up. I got by in real life, but I was never an avid texter or understood nuance of how to use MSN etc... now fast forward to today and they've got these algorithms that maliciously designed to capture the minds of their watchers.

What I've also hated about the online world is that it has thoroughly divided us because people can largely pick their own truth and read and interact with what they feel comfortable with, and honestly, it's culture destroying because the sheer volume of choice. There's no staying power of a band, or a show that everyone watches, or even in our case - a sport that everyone plays, because the internet allowed us to access huge swathes of international culture... I mean really, it's just flat out diluted what we all experience together.

I live in the middle of nowhere, where there is no paper for sale and it's liberating that I don't really know what's going on with politics and I can largely talk to everyone in town about their wants and interests, because well... what's on the internet doesn't really matter.

So, if there's something in place that forces that to happen on a wider scale so we maintain our Australian identify and stop letting American nonsense infiltrate everything, I'm all for it.

You give far too much credit to Parents..

Tin foil hat time.

I am a little concerned it's all just another step in the bigger picture plan for the world's governments to have access to everyone's social media, and hand out social credit scores accordingly.

The digital ID is already here. Now Trump wants visitors to the US to hand over 5 years' worth of social media in order to visit the US.

I don't know everyone else's thoughts but it seems like privacy from Big Brother is a thing of the past, or will be very soon.

I could just be a wacky nut job conspiracy theorist. I hope this is the case.

They're on it. Have this client liquidated immediately.

It would explain why they failed so epically with the rollout. It'd give them justification for the rollout of digital ID.

I've been avoiding commenting but this is the most accurate so far. Most, as usual, will get caught up in the minutiae of this single thing, but what's really going on is this is the opening salvo in a war between governments and tech companies.

Governments around the globe are very aware that power is shifting from governments to corporations. Information is now considered to be more valuable than cash and the future economy will be shaped not by who controls the mibey, but by who controls the information.

Information has obviously always been important, but it's now become the most important thing.

Not even joking, get ready for open warfare between all governments and the Tech gods. This obviously isn't physical, it's a digital war.

It is not surprising that Australia is the first to shoot either given we have much greater social awareness and value than most countries, eg Medicare, unions, compulsory voting.

DQ 4EVER (and any others)

Got a team?
I’ll give this a go. I’m a Dodgers guy, but hear me out! They were the first team I would have watched when I was a kid, probably that Kirk Gibson moment in hindsight; kids gravitate towards winners, too.

As I got more into MLB as an adult, I started to feel coy about going for the Dodgers, for obvious reasons. The money, the ubiquitous hat on Carousel mum’s etc.

And with this I found myself drifting towards the Orioles. I love their stadium (hope to visit before it is an internment camp) and the logo. That little mascot; it’s slightly subversive?!

However, having viewed Ken Burns’ Baseball, it really consolidated my Dodgers fandom. More Brooklyn, than LA. Hearing the accounts of Jackie Robinson made me cry. What a mensch.

I still prefer to wear an Orioles hat rather than a Dodgers one, though!

Saw the Orioles a bit and the stadium is a beauty. Never liked the owner though and the way he fought to prevent DC getting their team back. Still have a couple of Orioles caps though, with that subversive critter.

You’re a dimwit. Your argument is the same as the parent that says ‘Well the measles vaccine wasn’t too good for my kid so no other kids should get it.’
Something like 75-80% of parents agree with this. It gives us a leg to stand on. It’s been proven without a shadow of a doubt that social media for the vast majority of kids is very much a negative influence.
