The "no one wants to live in Adelaide" theory comes crashing down when you look at how Port has been able to retain quality players and trade in quality non-SA born players.

Part of our problem is our conservative culture and part of is our horrendous facilities.

Agree on this 100% - a total embarrassing joke we don't have state of the art best practice facilities. Real bush league stuff.

We are fast becoming Norf/St Kilda where we have huge $$ to buy players but seemingly no one wants to come here...

Oh please. It must be all those premierships Port have won retaining all those 'elite' players that want to play for destination club Port that makes you think that.

The only team currently in the 8 they've beaten is GWS. But they did beat Hawthorn, Adelaide, West Coast, Richmond, St Kilda and North. Wow, huge scalps

I don't know why people are complaining about the umpire free in the collingwood game when the collingwood player passed the ball to his team mate instead of the umpire. It is clear directions, the umpires demand the ball is passed to them straight away. Ive seen free kicks paid against players who throw the ball away from a boundary umpire. Not sure why fans and the media think passing to a team mate to waste time is ok?

Anyone watching the game has become conditioned to viewing it through a lens of moral relativism since there's no way to know if umpires will ever adjudicate based on the rules - it's now all about whether it's fair or unfair. And that depends on whose side you're on. It's rare these days to see an umpire just follow the rule book.

How many times do we hear "its technically a free but not at this stage of the game" or "you can't pay that right in front of goal". Or "its technically a free but they hardly ever pay those". Or "you don't pay frees like that in finals". Or "in the minor round that would get him a week but he can't miss a grand final for that".

You only have to look at what they've done to the holding the ball rule. They've tried to apply a moral code to it by giving the ball carrier more and more protection until they've actually broken the rule and made it almost impossible to be paid - unless an umpire thinks not paying it will have "unfair" consequences. And that can mean anything to anyone as the umpire who froze at the end of the Crows/Essendon game could attest.

Interesting with the holding the ball rule, Hardwick made a point in his press conference there were over 100+ tackles yet only 4 htb decisions paid. It is out of whack.

Either pay htb more often or only give plays “x” number of seconds to dispose of the ball - either way the game will flow. If they pay it more often players might think they could get pinged. At the moment, they know it will become a stoppage.

I think they will drop to the 5-8 zone by years end but with Sydney and Port looking like finishing top 2, the Bombers at home would be as softer first week of the finals that anyone could hope for if they stay top 4.

Port won’t finish top 2, should top 4 but that isn’t guaranteed either.

Port have beaten Essendon, Fremantle (just) and Geelong (nearly got caught). Lost to Melbourne and Collingwood and have yet to play GWS, Sydney, Carlton (x 2) and Melbourne (@ G).

I agree with the but I do find it laughable ironic that next week Hardwick will complain about too many HTB decisions '' rooning the game''

Coaches train for the stoppage and the current set up suits them

Imagine having to coach your players to run to where the ball is - not crawl along waiting for the inevitable stoppage

I didn’t like it.

The clock was stopped for starters.

Then in the time (a whole second) it took for the ball to go to Diacos, Nicholls was still a couple of strides away from being in position. All pretty benign for mine.

Players are also instructed to hand the ball back directly to the player with the fee. They don’t always pay 50 when it doesn’t happen though. One got let go earlier in the game iirc.

Agree but if you allow it, it will be used as a future tactic to get a few seconds to setup.

Nearly 99.9% of the time the ball is placed on the ground or given to the umpire at present.

Melb based myself and have to agree fans at the MCG are sadly very tame these days. People used to be both very vocal and genuinely very witty at the footy, and any disagreements between fans were light hearted and in pretty good spirits (with very rare exceptions). Now everyone's too scared to even yell "ball". (A lot of Victorian fans also often surprised to hear the increasing number of Crows fans in the crowd who will glare at you for saying "ball" as well but thats a different story.)
