On the topic of Zac Bailey, would he qualify as a South Australian under the new State of Origin eligibility? I heard/read somewhere that eligibility will be based off the location of the junior club a player is drafted from and not from where they may have spent the majority of their upbringing.

So, if a player boarded in different state to which they originate from, on a sports scholarship for their final two years of schooling, and was therefore drafted from the state league of which he boarded, he'll represent that state instead of where he actually grew up? 🤔
Sounds like a rule specifically developed to help Victoria, where many NSW footy kids go to high school on scholarships. So must be true

Had to laugh at the AFL 'threatening' Geelong over Smith's behaviour. Utterly pathetic and transparent from the jokes at AFL house after the criticism they copped for their investigation into Geelong's salary cheating.
What are they going to do? Penalise Geelong by gifting them another first round pick? Smack them with another million dollar recruit?
By golly gee willickers if that naughtly little Bailey Smith doesn't behave we'll have no choice but to ask him nicely again.

Remember when they changed the rules so Wayne Carey didn't qualify for SA?

I think the criteria should be around who you played junior rep footy for.

Even after moving to SA, he still played for the Allies, so I don’t think he should qualify for us.

I have been banging on about the AFL's hypocrisy is using these themed rounds of football .....Domestic Violence rounds, breast cancer rounds ect .....to mask the blatant promotion of betting, have it shoved down young people's throats

Sports betting, a major cause of alcoholism, and domestic violence ......damn hypocrites the AFL

This is where it leads .....the integrity of the game gets compromised ......it's not hard to sway young men, who maynot be getting the big $$$ that others get

Exactly and its already happened here with the umpire pell giving out brownlow votes , people who don't think it's happening and umpires affecting games with blatant missing of free kicks are delusional. Until the afl has the powers to check umpires , their families and friends betting accounts this will continue to be a blight on our game

All governments are disgracefully spineless on this, they are stuck on the teat and will not give it up

Wow.... big statement for a poster with such a track record
What look it up pell gave out brownlow information for betting purposes, we know of umpires making decisions to corupt a game troy panell .Did these things not happen ? Yes they did and ill state again until the afl investigate umpires , their families and friends betting accounts etc this game is open to corruption .The nba situation proves this, tennis , cricket etc

It’s staggering the level of influence and control over politics that gambling companies have.

Banning gambling advertisement in sport would be one of the most common sense, widely supported policies you could come up with, yet it never gets traction.

The industry is so predatory. The way they build associations between sport and gambling from the moment kids start tuning in to sport, then specifically market to young men, who’s ability to properly assess risk is not even fully developed, then once they’ve got gambling addicts, find any possible way to keep them hooked, it’s disgusting.

The AFL was in bed with tobacco companies .....then liquor companies .....they just gravitate naturally towards the next pot of money
Each time though, they're dragged kicking & screaming to disassociate themselves from relationships, via Govt Legislation

What is so immoral though, is the AFL pretending to be an agent for social change .....when in fact, it's simply a diversionary mask to avoid the betting spotlight

The AFL CANNOT say it's promoting healthy societal standards for children or families ......it's a total lie !

How long before it comes out , players , umpires etc are being blackmailed or bribed to alter results ?

Imagine if Bailey Smith's name was 'Izak Rankine'....

I do agree, but this is not reason to criticise good initiatives when they are put forward.

I.e. the AFL’s stance and response to racial abuse has undoubtedly improved the sport and likely extended to society.

So while you’re right to criticise the hypocrisy, it doesn’t mean people should get away with ****ing up or good initiatives should be shouted down.

I think the NBA situation shows that it doesn’t matter how much players/coaches are earning, the gambling industry still has power to influence people.

Im talking corruption and sports betting
I still dont care. Until the AFL decide to allow grey areas in interpretation there will always be both teams confused as to who gets the free

Really?

You seriously think the variations in an umpires legitimate and honest interpretation of the rules, is no different to the possibility that players, coaches and umpires are potentially fixing the outcome of games or individual moments?

Merrett heading back to Essendon is gonna be very interesting. Doesn’t list Essendon on his Instagram profile anymore and the posts he’s been liking since trade period are very much someone trying to make a point about how pissed off they are.

You cannot have legitimate and honest because you also have interpretation

Get rid of interpretation then we can see what happens

You cannot have legitimate and honest because you also have interpretation

You can, if that umpire is genuinely making what they think is the right call.

I can live with getting the rough end of the stick if an umpire makes a mistake. I can’t accept if an umpire is deliberately trying to alter the outcome of a match.

Get rid of interpretation then we can see what happens

How though?

Holding the ball/prior opportunity is a subjective rule. There will always be differences in interpretation. The only way to solve that is to get rid of the rule. That then becomes an extremely different game, one that I don’t think would be better.

Whether a player ducked, or dropped their knees, again, will always have a level of subjectivity to it. The only way to fix that would be to remove the rule entirely, and again, that doesn’t make the game better.

There’s more examples but I’m not going to list them for the sake of time. Umpires should continue to work to be as consistent as possible, but as fans, we do need to accept that some umpiring errors are a part of sport, they always have, and they always will be.

That is an entirely different situation to players, coaches or umpires deliberately fixing the game. I think you’re being extremely obtuse to act like there’s not a difference between umpire errors and match fixing.
