Merrett heading back to Essendon is gonna be very interesting. Doesn’t list Essendon on his Instagram profile anymore and the posts he’s been liking since trade period are very much someone trying to make a point about how pissed off they are.
Essendon made a mistake not trading him & now it's going to be an interesting watch.

Assume he can no longer be captain.

Its been said if he does go, he'll go to there or Geelong because his family are closer.

Yep. He grew up in Darlene, Bacchus Marsh and that is about 45 minutes from Geelong.

But he went to school at Maribynong College and that is basically next door to the Whitten Oval.

Well perhaps he shouldn’t have signed a long term contract back in 2021 (6 years).

To be fair you'd think things would change in 4 years

True but you still have signed a contract to provide you with a level of financial security.

Should Essendon have traded him? Probably given the shit show they have been the last 20+ years. Haven’t won a final since 2004. Just wow!

Think you meant Darley not Darlene. Imagine living in a suburb called Darlene.

I maintain that the 2016 Bulldogs flag run was match fixing by the umpires and no one will ever change my mind.

The entire season was suspect but the big ones obviously the 17-1 FK by one umpire against us, then the PF (23-13) followed by the GF (20-8).

Honestly the fact that the 17-1 wasn’t even investigated by the AFL and the messaging from Bevo that it’s crazy to even question, shows you how far the leagues head is in the sand. It was such a statistical improbability that it needed to be investigated. Just a coincidence was by an upstanding guy later charged with fraud.

The Brownlow betting scandal is the tip of the iceberg. You can say didn’t effect anything. But it’s now been proven there is corruption and fraud in the umpire fraternity. You’d have be an idiot not to think that they could use that to help with all types of other bets.

Problem is even if the AFL did discover legit match fixing, I doubt we’d ever hear about. They wouldn’t want the bad press or scandal and will try to bury it.

I settle on the AFL being wilfully ignorant.

I agree.

Regardless of how he plays next year it's a missed opportunity. Its why you need cool heads in those situations. They backed themselves into corner to early on in the trade period

Typical ESS ....Zig when they should have Zagged

The timing was right to get two 1st round picks and say McKenzie for Merrett.... unless they thought they were Finals material, which we all know is laughable

Getting max trade value now was the play .....instead, ESS will retain a great player in a bottom 8 side, and continue their theme of mediocrity
Can anyone make sense of that ?

New President was it that basically came in day 1 saying no way they trade Merrett. Wanted to make a stand but in the end needed to be smarter.

For such a big club they seem to be run by amateurs. Their obsession with Hird is another one. Sacking Rutten because they thought they could make a 1 week pitch to Clarkson (because anyone would be honoured to coach Essendon, I guess).

Pretty sure similar situation with Joe Daniher they could have traded to Sydney for a bunch of first round picks. Held on to him only to lose him next year as FA for a single pick.

It’s no wonder they haven’t won final in over 20 years.

They’ve screwed him over and hurt themselves in the process. He has performed so consistently for them over 12 years, and they’ve played in 4 finals in that time. He signed a contract after they sold him a vision of where they’re going, but now they’re in another rebuild, which is definitely not what he would have anticipated when he signed.

He’s 30 years old, and his odds of playing finals football, let alone contend for a premiership, are extremely slim if he stays at Essendon. They know that too.

I think he’s earnt the right to finish his career somewhere that gives him a better chance of team success. Not only that, the deal that on the table would have been a net positive for Essendon with where they’re are at.

I’m not sure why Essendon decided to hold him to his contract in the end, as I don’t think it’s beneficial for him or the club. That situation is now going to be a pretty toxic one I’d imagine.

AFL umpire Nick Foot has a job at Sportsbet, and the AFL ticked that off saying it’s not a conflict of interest.

They know full well that that is potentially a conflict, however they could not possibly make that stance, because if they did, there would be a lot of very prominent people in footy who would also have to step away from different roles.

Don't worry, there are 3-4 factions behind the scenes agitating continuously ......it's a very fractured Club

I was wondering about how the other players would react to him

Maybe they all want to leave that shitshow and he won't quite be treated like the leper we imagined

Would be funny if he retired, and just said yeah I've had enough of Essendon as a player.

Obviously he'd be leaving millions on the table but it would screw Essendon over the most.
