In reality, cyclists should be able to treat most traffic lights as give way signs. That doesn't mean you can fly through an intersection, rather, if it's clear, continue on. It actually helps traffic flow more.

Errrrr, no they shouldn't. If you want to ride on the road, obey the road rules. Allowing cars, buses and trucks to 'treat most traffic lights as give way signs' would help traffic flow more, too.

I haven't even rode one anywhere for 10 years myself but never understood the weird level of hate for bike riders.

In my experience, cyclists, motorist and pedestrians are all as bad as each other. It tends to be the cyclists that want special treatment, though.

FWIW I drive a car, ride a bike and catch PT so I can hate freely.

except that bicycles fundamentally operate differently to cars, buses and trucks -

Not wanting an argument over this, but bike hate is so weird - It's like the lazy ones in a car get really worked up about cyclists getting an advantage on the road or something

This bullshit. Get out of the ****ing way!

you'd be going slower if all the bikes were in cars

also, depending on the street, it's safer when we stick out and slow you down, so you don't fly past us

deal with it
How would we be going slower if you lot were in cars? 20ks compared to 60+ks.. Not following there.

I won't stupidly overtake but when the opportunity arises im going around a bike rider when there is a perfectly suitable track literally a meter to the side of the road where they are 1. Out of danger and 2. Not slowing down vehicles. Barely ever drive in the city so don't cop it there, but where I am now its not like they can't move out of the way and still ride.

I don't hate all cyclists, I just hate the stupid ones--e.g. I'm turning right at the lights, legally, and they then ride up my right side going straight, completely cutting me off. Get on the other side of my car, you fool.

If bicycles are fundamentally different then they shouldn't be on roads. There's good reason why bikes and scooters aren't allowed on Freeways, pedestrians aren't allowed on railway tracks etc.

I get that bikes are essentially a new thing in Australia and our cities aren't designed for them, but everywhere I go there seems to be new bike paths and bike lanes going in yet cyclists continue to act like ****sticks. 'Oh we'd rather ride on the road' 'Oh we should be allowed to run red lights' 'It's better to ride two or three abreast'. It's no wonder they drive motorists crazy.

that sounds crazy - I have no idea why you'd want to cut a car of from the right when that's the direction they're turning - Normally that clears a path for you to the car's left.

i think it's also important to distinguish between the cyclist who rides in a pack and the cyclist who commutes - I think the former gives the latter a bad name on the road

I have my license but I haven't owned a car for nearly 8 years

Also, some of us non-drivers actually have the physical ability to ride a bike, so you guys don't have to sook about making plans to meet at a train station
That's fine. Someone who doesn't have a bike or some other alternative really is a moron though unless they live smack bang near a useful train line.

23 years old and haven't felt a need to get my license since there's a lot of good public transport where I live, though recently I'm beginning to have a change of heart since a few close friends moved to different parts of Melbourne which is a bitch to get to via train. Once I find the time in the near future I'll probably go for my license.

I dislike non-drivers like my sister in law who doesnt take public transport but would rather sponge of family members or friends to take her everywhere.

The older you get the further away your friends move. My high school gang who grew up in a 5km radius of each other now stretch between Airport West, Pakenham and Edithvale. I'm so glad we all drive, otherwise we'd never see each other.

None of my friends would be stupid enough to live in pakenham.
