I'm struggling to figure out how it's gone wrong for them
They play a very stagnant style. Some hallmarks of Geelong 2019-2021. I have a theory about why that isn’t sustainable in the current AFL era which I’ll expand on when I have more time.

That's not a new thing. It's been happening since I was a 5 year old going to the footy. Believe it or not I used to hear people bagging Tom Hawkins endlessly at games ... And that was up until pre-covid. I've only been to a couple of games since crowds were allowed back.
Same.

There’s a guy who sits behind me in the Brownlow Stand who is constantly bagging out the players all game. I like to turn around and just smile when one of the players he has been potting does something good.

They were moving the ball far quicker earlier in the season, Taberner/Lobb/Brodie/Serong/Acres (remember him? His last great game was against us in Rd 7)/Darcy all had purple (lol) patches earlier in the season and all at the same time.
The Taberner/Lobb drop off hurts them the most, because when they are shit it means guys like Walters, Henry and Frederick get less chance at ground level. They aren't good enough like other smalls (Ryan at WCE for example) who can bring the ball to ground on their own.

Add that to the fact they caught some teams at the right time.
Got the covid affected Weagles, the Cameron coached Giants before the got the new coach bump, the Bombers while they weren't competitive, us while we were still getting used to the gameplan, the deplorable Kangas. 5 wins due to getting teams "at the right time".
They copped a loss in Rd 2 to the Saints when they were in form, but then offset that by getting the Saints later in the year while they have been shit.

But lately, along with players out of form, they caught a Carlton team in Rd 15 that was running hot, they lost to the Swans who are a finals contender and stamped their authority after half time, snatched a lucky draw from a woeful Richmond, and then got a lesson from Melbourne.
Next week they have an in form Bulldogs, who regardless of tonights result as long as there are no covid/injuries will beat Freo @ Marvel, and then they have the Eagles (not a sure thing atm) and the Giants (should be a win).

tl;dr
Early season form, catching teams at the right time gave Freo a bump, now players are out of form and they are catching teams as they are in form.

There are gameplan issues too, but I saw someone else is going to maybe go into that so I will leave it to them.

It looks like Melbourne have found their hunger again. They'll be hard to beat in finals.
They will be hard to beat in finals as they play thier system well. If you arent prepared to switch the play often and take the game on you will spend all night kicking it to May. Freo are ranked last in playing on after a mark and by the time they moved it on there were 15 Demons in the Freo forward line.

Melbourne didnt show us anything new tactically last night.

Hence why 2013 will forever be another golden opportunity squandered.
That Fremantle team was solid, and they did beat us in the QF, but with Hawkins & Enright back in the team, Chapman not starting as the sub, we get them in the grand final.

Hawthorn got nothing from their rucks, nothing from Breust or Franklin and they still controlled the game and won it convincingly in the end.

You're right. The only problem is it's the 1000th time we've heard it.

We can't change what happened a decade ago, why talk about it?

Yeah, there was an old bloke who sat near us for years who used to bag the crap out of the players all day. And that was in the golden three premierships era.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving how we're going at the minute but footy isn't what it used to be.

Brisbane, Freo, Collingwood etc should be no where near a premiership. No where near the top 4. The percentage of the top 8 of the last few years makes that abundantly clear.

I'm sure the AFL would love this, as it goes along with their goal of equalisation...but is the comp equal? Or is everyone just really s**t?

Even the best sides, Melbourne and our good selves, are they that good? Reckon any side from this year would be pumped by the top teams of '11, '09, '10, or the early 00s.

As a Geelong supporter it probably seems convenient to pick these years, but the reality is it was just before the introduction of the expansion sides. There's been a talent vacuum and there just isn't enough to go around after so many compromised drafts.

Maybe it's just me, but it just doesn't look or feel the same anymore. So much is based on the eye test, and the top teams just don't pass it anymore.

Two extra teams and the standard drops. Killing the golden goose for tv revenue.

Freo kicking it constantly down the line to May, Lever and Gawn doesn't help.

No surprise that Melbournes worst games have been when May and Lever can't drop off, teams don't panic kick down the line etc.

Opportunity missed definitely, but squandered feels a bit harsh. I reckon Freo had us covered that year regardless. Hawkins, even in the side, wasn't moving that freely. He only kicked 3 goals in his last 4 games leading into that finals series. They had us covered comfortably in the QF. We then struggled to beat an average Port side. The PF was a fantastic performance and we likely would have won had Chapman and Enright played, but that's hardly anyone's fault. I remember at the time not being overly upset losing the PF as I didn't think we'd beat Freo.

I think Freo will be better next year. They seem like a team of young players who started the season full of energy but as the grind of the long season kicked in, they've dropped off and are now inconsistent week to week. It happens. The only problem next season is they won't benefit from a softer draw for having finished outside the top 8 in the previous season. Collingwood will be in the same boat.

I fully expect them to win but I just don't see how people consider Collingwood genuine premiership contenders. They switch off frequently and as a team just don't defend well.

Remember, Port kicked 8 goals against us in one quarter.
Let's see if Collingwood can reel in another team that has jumped them (again).

Listening to the 'footy experts' today across the radio spectrum, they all seem to say the same thing - all a team needs is just 'a Jeremy Cameron type' to go all the way.

I'm guessing their wives are thinking the same thing.
