Sam Grlj #5
  • This was a decent outing for Grlj but we're still waiting for that real breakout Champs performance that we expect from a kid with his talent. He was able to showcase his trademark dash and evasion on a few occasions, but struggled with the strong wind as most did on the day.

A note for the commentators. A little bit of professionalism would be nice. This is the pinnacle of junior footy. Many of these kids will go on to become stars of the AFL but regardless of that, all have earned the right to have you put in a little bit of effort to research how their names are pronounced... and pro tip, Grlj is not pronounced "Groo" or any of the other wild guesses you made. If a job is worth doing then its worth doing well.

    Hussien El Achkar #5
  • Huss has hit a strong vein of form in recent weeks, and he showed again here how dangerous he can be. He got up the ground a little more than he has been this season and turned on the jets on a number of occasions to burn off defenders, helping to transition Metro quickly into an open forward line. He had a game high score involvements, kicking two goals of his own.

    Tylah Williams #1
  • Williams might be the player from this WA Champs squad who's most enhanced his reputation over the course of the carnival. Entering as the least heralded of the Eagles club linked players, he's arguably outperformed them all through these four games and we saw some of his best in the final game here. His work rate is a real stand out, closing down space with repeat efforts and putting his body on the line to disrupt the opposition, and then gut running into space to create outlet opportunities. He has dancing feet and enjoys taking opponents on, often seeming to improvise things on the fly which can make his possessions an adventure. His skills are typically solid, although he did struggle with kicking accuracy in the strong wind at times here.

    Sam Cumming #9
  • Sam Cumming had his senior SANFL debut for North Adelaide on the weekend and produced a creditable and promising performance. With his team copping an almighty shellacking at the hands of Sturt, Cumming could have been forgiven for getting a bit lost, but he worked hard all game and might even have snuck into the Roosters best. He showed no fear of the mature bodies, cracking in and laying his share of bumps and tackles. His kicking wasn't as effective as we've come to expect, possibly due to him being rushed by the increased pace of the game, or possibly because his tall targets were getting soundly beaten by their opponents.

    Jevan Phillipou #2
  • After unfortunately missing out on representing SA at the Champs due to recovering from a broken arm, Phillipou had been overlooked a little by draft watchers. In this game he reminded us of his quality. He's a superior athlete, a power runner on the outside with the physicality to mix it in contested situations and agility and burst of pace to get from inside to outside the contest. He's capable of pushing forward, taking a strong grab and impacting the scoreboard. In this game some of his decision making with the ball was poor at times, and his kicking was a little untidy in near perfect conditions with very little wind.

    Lachlan Carmichael #3
  • Another huge game from Carmichael who entered the Champs series behind his two Swans academy teammates in the minds of many, but he's outperformed them both and boosted his draft stocks in the process. This was a fairly run of the mill big game from Carmichael through three quarters with him racking up a stack of the footy sweeping across half back. His move into the midfield in the fourth quarter was more interesting for draft watchers, with Lachie having a few big moments which might hint at as yet unrealized potential for the future.

    Kaiden Summerell #1
  • Kaiden Summerell has been creating some serious buzz with a string of BOG performances at Colts level over the last several weeks, putting himself firmly in the draft frame in spite of missing out on the WA champs squad. He's yet another left footed half back distributor which has become a real feature in this draft pool, and shares similarities with Josh Lindsay and Jacob Farrow. A low ball drop and penetrating kick allows him to do real damage, although he's perhaps not quite as smooth or accurate as Lindsay, and excellent overhead marking skills allow him to play taller than his listed height.

    Oliver Greeves #11
  • Greeves is this season's metronome, putting in strong performances every week no matter the conditions or the level of competition. He started forward, his shift into the midfield midway through the first quarter coinciding with Metro getting on top through the middle, Greeves ultimately ending as the leading clearance winner for the game. He was involved in a number of Metro's best forward moves, the early season question marks around his kicking skills seeming to have been put to bed.

    Lachy Dovaston #8
  • Another strong performance from Dovaston who's become extremely consistent playing a position where that's no easy task. The highlight of his performance was of course the four goals, end product from his ability to continually pop up in the right place at the right time. He got up the ground quite a bit to find the ball and was creative with it even though he didn't always hit his target. As always with Lachy, his defensive pressure was very strong.

    Adam Sweid #6
  • In a very even team performance for Metro Adam Sweid gets the nod for BOG in my eyes due to how clean, constructive and damaging his possessions were paired with his strong presence around stoppage. Given he was predominantly playing midfield, his four goals were a real highlight, testament to his work rate to push forward and his reading of the play.

    Jack Pickett #1
  • Jack Pickett is looking like a boom tall forward prospect for the 2026 draft. Fresh off a Champs debut for Vic Country against the Allies he followed that up with a huge performance here against the Western Jets kicking 7 goals. He has some serious aerial prowess and has been a consistent source of goals for the Falcons since his Talent League debut.

    Mitch Marsh #3
  • Marsh has rocketed up draft boards over the last month and a half on the back of an extremely strong Champs campaign. Here we see him back playing SANFL U18s for West Adelaide and putting together a solid performance with his strong marking and penetrating left boot featuring strongly.

    Cooper Duff-Tytler #9
  • CDT was better than the pure stats suggest here with most of his touches leading to positive outcomes for Metro. Most rucks who have a strong follow up game tend to scrap at ground level and dish off to their more fleet footed midfielders, but CDT can turn the corner himself and burst out into space, more in the mould of a Luke Jackson. We also saw CDT take a couple of marks when resting forward and he chipped in with a goal which was a positive development. If he can prove that he can impact as a forward through the final stretch of the season that could be the difference between him being taken at pick 1 or sliding down into the back end of the top 10.

    Koby Bewick #3
  • A hard fought and competitive clash between Metro and WA saw Koby Bewick and his Metro squad come away with the win. Koby was less dominant than in the first Champs game but still had some elite moments, able to find space and use his dash and damaging kicking skills to penetrate attacking 50 effectively on numerous occasions.

    Sam Cumming #10
  • A huge breakout game from Sam Cumming in only his second senior SANFL appearance for North Adelaide. In a game in which his team struggled for long stretches Cumming seemed to represent their only hope of getting back into the contest. There's very little that Cumming can't do, he's a fantastic athlete with a burst of speed and ability to leap for high marks, he can win the ball at stoppage, and he has a lovely long penetrating kick. There will be increasing talk of Cumming pushing well inside the top 10 on the back of this game, and its fully deserved.

Unfortunately the second half of this game represented a major set back in the on going battle between the SANFL camera operators and the zoom button. But as they say, it's much better to lose a battle and win the war... and you may call me a dreamer, but I believe that one day the SANFL camera operators will find the zoom button.

    Dyson Sharp #14
  • Just FYI for people making requests, I'm probably going to have to limit the number of zoomed out SANFL games I cover each week. They take at least twice as long to edit and are murder on my eyes.

    ---

Called up to play senior SANFL for the Bulldogs Sharp turned in a super solid performance. He has the mature body to impact immediately next season at AFL level and his contested game here was as fantastic as always, winning clearances, laying tough tackles and coming out on top in a number of important contested battles around the ground. I still feel as though he's a bit more hesitant to impose himself than he is in the junior comps, let's hope he sheds himself of that with more experience at the level.

    Axel Walsh #1
  • I don't know if any club board are interested in looking at 2027 draft prospects. I'll leave it up to you guys to post it if you like.

    ---

Axel Walsh has been getting some early hype as a potential number 1 pick for the Tassie draft in 2027. He was dominant in the ruck here, winning almost every hit out and laying the table for his mids with deft tap work as well as following up himself at ground level to get the ball moving for his team. His skills and movement can be a bit raw at this stage, but there's a ton of potential there and he'll be a fascinating watch over the next two years to see how he develops.

    Louis Emmett #5
  • It hasn't quite happened yet for Louis Emmett this season, failing to hit the heights that he reached in his bottom age year due to various set backs. There's still plenty of time left in the season for him to find stronger form, and he still shows enough to keep draft watchers interested. He's one of the best contested marks in the draft pool and showed some of that talent here, along with his physicality and ability to compete at a high level in contested situations generally.

    Tairon Ah-Mu #2
  • Tairon Ah-Mu has really turned heads with his play through the Champs series, proving that his strengths as a player become even more prominent and damaging with the step up to a higher level. His combination of size and strength is unmatched in this draft pool and make him a tough cover for any key defender, especially when combined with his sticky hands, and his booming kick makes him a goal threat out to 60 meters. In this performance his marking prowess was on full display both around the ground and inside forward 50 where he took a game high 4 contested grabs.

    Koby Bewick #4
  • A damaging game from Koby who was among the best for a dominant Vic Metro team that looks like it will be a scary proposition in two years at the U18 carnival. Bewick played off the half back line for the first three quarters before a shift into the midfield in the last. His rebound and run was pivotal in a large number of Metro's scoring chains, showcasing his pace, elite disposal skills, vision and decision making.

    Baxter Sruk #1
  • A name for the future to note down in capital letters, underline and highlight with probably a few exclamation marks just to be sure. Baxter Sruk was terrific in this game, the memory of him wheeling onto his left boot and dashing through 50 to slot running goals or hit up teammates will likely give the SA players and staff nightmares. Sruk has a powerful frame that he knows how to use in contests, he reads the play and has the running power to find space ahead of the ball and the dash and classy finishing skills to punish when he has it.

    Cooper Duff-Tytler #10
  • CDT started on fire early in this one, laying to rest a couple of the concerns around his game by taking contested marks in the forward 50 and hitting the scoreboard. He even pulled off a lovely lead up at the ball carrier into a comfortable chest mark, showing spacial awareness, timing and acceleration to create separation. Given he's slightly undersized for a ruck at 200cm, building confidence in his forward craft will go a long way towards allaying concerns over his selection right at the top end of the draft this year.

    Willem Duursma #14
  • Willem chose a fantastic moment to unlock full Thrillem mode for Vic Country against their great rival Vic Metro. A move back into the midfield saw him much more involved in general play and gave him the freedom to hunt the ball around the ground, impacting in the air and swooping on loose balls. His disposal was more consistent than usual, allowing Willem to damage Metro on a number of occasions with balls into the F50.

    Talor Byrne #4
  • A brilliant performance from Byrne who did some special things on a big stage. He only ended up with one tackle for the game but some of his best moments came from an application to applying defensive pressure to force Metro into mistakes which then turned into scoring opportunities. His overhead marking for a kid his size was elite, his work rate to get up and back was a highlight, and he kicked a variety of goals including a couple of classy opportunistic snaps.

    Harry Dean #3
  • Few draft prospects have elevated their stock more this Champs carnival than Harry Dean. The Carlton father-son has proven that his standout traits of reading the play, intercept marking, and using physicality to out point opponents in 1v1 marking contests have stood up with the move to higher level competition. There will still be some questions around him being slightly undersized for the position, and it'll be interesting to see if he gets a run out for the Blues in the VFL through the back end of the season.
