Hall of Famer
only problem, is the GDR and West Germany unification. South Korea are now a serious heavyweight on the international stage, economically and culturally. Somewhere like Japan in the 80s,, except half the population.
South Korea dont wont unification, and if North Korea opens up and the dynasty of the Kim dynasty go, this will become a serious option.
I dare say that if, somehow, NK turned around tomorrow and said to SK 'we give up, let us join you (as GDR did), there wouldn't be a politician who would, publicly, be less that overjoyed. Sure, privately they'd be panicking, just as you suggest, but it really would be an offer they couldn't refuse.
The only real upside they'd have would be that they could use the Germans as a template and maybe do better (although I suspect the gap between the societies is larger).
