Politics North Korea May Be Preparing Missile Launch

only problem, is the GDR and West Germany unification. South Korea are now a serious heavyweight on the international stage, economically and culturally. Somewhere like Japan in the 80s,, except half the population.

South Korea dont wont unification, and if North Korea opens up and the dynasty of the Kim dynasty go, this will become a serious option.

I dare say that if, somehow, NK turned around tomorrow and said to SK 'we give up, let us join you (as GDR did), there wouldn't be a politician who would, publicly, be less that overjoyed. Sure, privately they'd be panicking, just as you suggest, but it really would be an offer they couldn't refuse.

The only real upside they'd have would be that they could use the Germans as a template and maybe do better (although I suspect the gap between the societies is larger).

telsor, that is deluded. Politicians do not want that burden. It would be like Canberra acceding Papua New Guinea AND East Timor. No chance

There isn't the same domestic belief that PNQ/Timor is part of our country here. People don't have families divided by an arbitary line that only really marks where the fighting stopped 60 years back.

the people that have families, are 0.0001% of the population, they are all dying off now. the Japanese aren't agitating to get their kidnapped few back and have NK-SK rejoined

Do China and Taiwan think they should recombine? They've been separate longer, and have fewer divided families, but still believe themselves to be 1 country, divided by a pesky political concern. These things take a very long time to die.

its about the $$$ stupid.

NB, not pejorative response to telsor, just channelling the Bill Clinton line "its the economy stupid"

Oh, I understand the case against, but public opinion would be heavily the other way, and people/governments make stupid financial decisions when the money isn't directly coming from them.

I see your avatar, and think of camus mute mother in Algiers

maman est morte aujourd hui.

time for you to bury her skilts. 7 days morning, burial by 7th evening. its ok m8, we feel your pain
You are closer to the mark than you could possibly know about the avatar. Peter van der Veer, the photographer responsible for the image, wrote this as a caption to the photo:

John's demeanour suggested something solitary - so I spontaneously portrayed this notion. The French were ecstatic about it. Guy Le Marnier, then curator Bibliotheque Nationale Paris demanded a copy with other works, to represent the young "Avant Garde" of photography.

The John he mentions, the subject of the photo, which was taken in 1975, was a friend of mine, who has subsequently died. I like the photo, that's why it's there. It's still there because I rarely get around to changing my avatar.

That's the one. You too should have been a photographer. No photo of the sister, unfortunately. A few months ago, I was talking to a bloke who also knew both of them, and he agreed with me that he had never seen a more handsome woman. I've probably already told you this. My memory is more pornographic than photographic.
