Well I asked the Dees to “Give it a go” and that they did, at one stage it even looked like they might snatch the game in the most unlikely circumstances. I wouldn’t say things where looking excellent for the season ahead, but with the youngsters getting a good run, and the improvement on last week, it seems ND’s plan of easing them into the season may not be SO bad. I’ll still be waiting until after a round or 2 of the season proper to be too worried about a loss, so I am surprisingly not annoyed with the loss. There is a long list of positives that we can take out of the game; I’ll just go through a few.
First up the back-line looked 100% better than last week, making Brisbane earn every mark and tackling at every opportunity. The mid-field looked dangerous at times, with some decent kicking, and tons of pressure. The forward line, still missing Schwarz’s strength was pretty good. Many goals game from mid-fielders moved forward, which was what I assumed would happen. The Dee’s had spare men in their defense, which in turn meant that Brisbane did as well, so at times it was kick to kick through the mid-field.
Overall the game plan was different from last week, kicking more through the corridor rather that down the flanks. And I for one think it’s about time ND tried something different!
Now for some individual performances:
Armstrong: Played well primarily in the forward line, gaining many possessions and kicking a couple of goals, seems to fit in well at senior level.
Miller: Melbourne’s last National draft pickup, he didn’t get much of a game, but he was moved into the forward line where he got immediate results, with a goal from his first kick.
Ellis: Played a good game, making many spoils and even provided some run off halfback.
Lamb: Who was it that said he sucked?? Ok he wasn’t perfect, but he was allot more effective this week and actually looked like he was up to senior footy. With this performance he will most likely play against Adelaide next weekend.
Bizzel: Although he played most of the game across the half-forward/midfield, Biz also dropped back as a spare player in defense, which worked quite effectively.
Walsh: Played in the midfield and wracked up plenty of possessions, kicking a big goal in the final term, pity we couldn’t keep the run going.
White: Had another good game, which he rucked most of. He was given a bit of a break in the 2nd term, but apart from that he was on the ground for the rest of the game (that I know of) He was also moved for a brief stint in the forward line.
Funke: Was dominating the midfield early on, Funke had a great game, helping clear the ball out of defense, and move it into attack.
Yze: Started poorly with 3 behinds before he started to make an impact. Had allot of it in the second half, and booted a nice goal (maybe 2)
TJ: Was quieter than last week, but he still had an impact on the game. He showed of his skills with both feet, and most of the time picked the right option to go to.
Green: Floated up the ground, Green had an OK performance, but missing set shots he should have made really took away from his game.
Robbo: Was in the air on every occasion possible, for a few nice marks. Almost took a nice “hanger” in the goal square right on full time, but the ball trickled over for a behind. At least this week Robbo was able to get his hands on the ball.
Broady: I thought he played well in defense, making some effective spoils and generally making a nuisance of himself for the Lions forwards.
Woe: Played hard this week (it’s about time) I noticed him making plenty of tackles, and chasing down his opponents, which was something that lacked in the St. Kilda game. Was not explosive, but at least he put in!
J Mac: All I have to say about him is that I noticed he looks like a real shrimp! Not a great physical presence at all.
Wheatley: Even though I would like to see him up forward, he played down back, where he had a decent game. Many times he used his booming kick-to-kick 50/60+ meters out of the back line.
Leonchelli: Had a team lifting game in the midfield, sending the ball from the center bounces deep into attack.
Robbins: Could be promoted during the year, Robbins looked settled in senior footy, taking on his opponents deep in defense, and making great passes under pressure.
And lastly Jamar: I thought he struggled, being beaten in the ruck on most occasions. He was on the bench for much of the game, with White seeming never to rest!
Well that’s all I can think of now, if I said anything way off the mark, I’ll blame the time
going into next week with the return of Schwartz, Neitz, Febey and possibly Ward. With the likes of Neitz, Powell and Vardy to come back for round one, the Dees are getting out of Pre-Season mode and into Match-Playing mode (as ND would say) My only hope is we can keep up the performance next week, bring on the crows.

, but over all he improved and at least now he is getting a descent run, not 30 seconds!
), and Yze got 3 behinds?
. Lamb was much better this week. I was impressed by MIller,Robbins & Armstrong. Leoncelli looked a lot better.
