What is "white"?
Is it someone of British/Irish heritage? Is it someone of European heritage? Is it just the colour of someone's skin?

You feel that you can be the arbiter of what is "white" and whether that confers some magical privilege to an individual.
Not that long ago my father was called a dirty wog by police and even the teachers at school, I have lost jobs because I looked "too European" and not even given a look in because I grew up poor and from Footscray. But under your ignorant and simplistic worldview my skin colour would see me as privileged.
Class is the only real privilege. And ignorant people like you need to check theirs. Don't ignore people's lived experience because you think everyone who looks like you has lived like you.

I empathise with you and your father having to go through those situations. Seeing as you and your family have had to live through this kind of shit, I find it hard reconcile that you would disagree with a concept such as white privilege. Seems contradictory to me but kind of interesting.

I totally disagree class privilege is the only kind, otherwise poor ethnic minorities would be the only ones to cop this rubbish. Racism doesn't discriminate based on class.

I try to check my privilege all the time. Apart from what you might think, I'm not so deluded to think I'm above this. As I've already said in this thread, it's easy to say something racist without meaning to. I've done it, we've all done it. The first part of improving is at least recognising that privilege.

Never saying anything offensive doesn't make you a smart person or a better person, it doesn't even make you a sensitive person - it just confirms your compliant timidity to the popular fashion.

I'm not excusing racism I'm just saying my opinion that's a kid dressing up is bit racist and even if one person thinks it is it doesn't make it so.

I've done some awful things in my life against people of all creeds and colours and none of them are any worse than the other simply due to the race of the person I wronged.

Seems to me people searching for racism do it to avoid facing their own hypocrisy in face of real crime committed today and prefer to escape into this fictional war.

I disagree with the concept of white privilege because white is arbitrary. As is any "colour". Your assessment is ignorant and simplistic. We all have our own individual demons and face our own marginalizations. To assume anything based on someone's race is in itself kind of racist.

Class is the only thing that can adequately be generalized and even that is comprised of different individual stories. But in general a person with a huge amount of money will have a much easier time navigating the system than someone who is poor. Otherwise all people can face some type of sytemic and individual discrimination and/or marginalization in Australia. Some are lucky, some aren't.

Stop generalizing and start listening.

I personally don't care to weigh in on the "blackface" topic as I can see merit in both sides being expressed (I even lean slightly towards your thoughts). My problem is when you wave away and dismiss a person's thoughts and feelings because of their race and whatever "privilege" you feel they have. That is disgraceful and disrespectful behaviour no matter what race you are doing it to.

Not sure if this is directed to me specifically or just people in general, but I have not once said I am offended by what happened with the kid. You don't need to be personally offended to recognise that something is offensive to others.

Sure it's not as bad as it has been historically, but that does not mean it is gone completely. Look at what's happening in the US currently, or in our own prisons.


To put some questions out there to everyone, knowing that certain actions are offensive to large groups of people, why is so hard to stop doing them or defending these actions? Should we not just take that on board and simply modify our behaviour? I mean isn't that what you would do if someone told you something was offensive to them? What's the big deal if you can't paint your face black anymore? Are we now in a place where this behaviour is carried on and defended just to make a point that we won't be told what to do?

It just makes me so sad that it seems like nobody even cares.
