November 24th – Howard Vs Rudd

and go through another Election...Kevin08.

I doubt that would happen.

The process takes at least 4-5 months.

If Kevin can draft a bill of such importance in a week I would be concerned. Ever read one of those? About 20 lawyers go through it before presentation to the Lower house.

A new IR bill will not be ready till march at the earliest. I doubt he will present it till July 08.

Have a read of this

http://australianpolitics.com/parliament/deadlocks/double-dissolution.shtml

This site is a great site to learn about Federal Parliament and our Constitution.

Rudd will have issues with the Greens and Mr X after July 08.

Isnt it great to live in a democracy, not exactly efficient but we all get our say.

Thanks for that. :thumbsu:

But it still could happen & the Labor Party might not be able to resist the temptation to inflict more damage to the coalition.

I would be surprised if Rudd/Gillard does not already have the IR bill ready & waiting for fine tuning to present to both houses as early as possible.

Do you think Rudd will recall parliament before christmas ?

famous last words...

Expect mortgagte rates of 10.5 around mid 2009. Has nothing to do with Labor getting in, but will happen, and they will cop the blame. Interest rates are at historical lows now, a 6.75% cash rate is quite low. Law of averages says it will go up.

Don’t necessarily agree with this because with an honest fiscal economical approach the ALP will listen to the Reserve Bank of Australia and keep the surplus as low as possible. Meaning the interest rates will not increase to your predictions. Haven’t we had like 9 interest rate increases in a row under the Australian Liberal party? So surly the ALP will do everything in their power to transform this market trend and slow the government spending.

By mid 2009 I can see it potentially increasing by 1% but nothing like your prediction.

Lock your rate in...next rise will be January

But on the short term agree with this.

Not looking forward to January but, my 5 year fixed term comes off term and I have to re fix my mortgage. I have had a rate of 6.05% for the last few years and will have to increase it to 8.25% for 5 years

**** I am not looking forward to that.

Not sure if it worth recalling Parliament before christmas. But would not surprise me if they did, for media.

Have you not heard of "double dissolution" ?

if you think the Libs are in a mess now just think what they would be like if Rudd pulled that one on them next year.

As long as the bill is prepared in time i would be very surprised if the Work Choices reversal was not passed after the usual hoo-hah in the senate well before July.

Julia Gillard spoke this morning on TV and that subject was raised and she said they cant do anything until Paraliment sit next year but the bill will be passed through to scrap workchoices:thumbsu:

I myself am not on an AWA but on an EBA but we are in our last year of our EBA so there was the concern from us all that we could be offered AWA's in place of the EBA when it come around next year, but that concern has now died down:thumbsu:

This election has truly re-written Australian electoral history and for the better IMO.

Howard will lose Bennelong and Turnbull will hold onto Wentworth. Rudd will hold a majority by 6 six seats.

I conveniently left my Cornes prediction out. Eek... I couldn't be much happier with that result however. It seems that people are genuinely interested in substance as she bucked the trend and lost 2% of Chloe Fox's vote - which I presume went to the Greens who went up near 10% in Boothby.

Abbott has announced he will run for leadership. I would be violently ill if that was the case. Also I'd be quite surprised considering what a shocking campaign he had this year. Downer is very unlikely at this stage. Nelson is a dark horse and would be an interesting candidate. I'd enjoy the idea of a former 'union' (I use that term very liberally of course) head and one time ALP member as leader the Liberals. Would show how bad their national situation now is. I'm quite a fan of Turnbull, but I think he may be a little alienating in the way Keating or Hewson were. Although they are all quite remarkable individuals and excellent leaders, it is hard for the median voter to relate to them.

Ahh Tony Abbott, the Liberal's Mark Latham. :p

Hisotry indicates that who ever takes over the leadership in opposition will not be leader of that party by the time the next election comes around. No wonder most of them are happy to stay on the back bench.

The ALP are ALL about spending... and they have promised to spend a LOT! Apart from that, the interest rates are primarily WORLD economy driven, not just local. They would have gone up the last 9 times under labor too (only the rates may have been higher).

No big surprises with the results. It was time for a change. Let's see what Kevin07 (the worst frigging election slogan EVER  ) can do.

Some of the backbenchers may not even be in parliament come the next election, given it is hard to get back in Government after 1 term (ie. Rudd would need to stuff up badly).

I too wouldn't want to see Abbott leading the Libs, as I can't say I'm a fan of many of his ideals. Turnball or Nelson would be better options IMO.

Really wasn’t it Kevin Rudd and the ALP that outlined a $2.1 Billion dollar election package compared to the $9.7 billion dollar one of the Australian Liberal party?

From my perspective that would be the Australian Liberal party promising to spend a LOT of money to buy votes, so stop believing the Liberal (or your own) propaganda of the 1980s that the ALP will spend, spend and spend some more.

I was actually around in the early 70's and mid-late 80's when they spent, and spent some more - were you? :p I had a mortgage rate of 18% and getting work was bloody tough - I have a LONG memory. The 2.1 Billion dollar election package was only the part of the "package" that was announced at the "launch" of the campaign. They'd announced a much larger spending commitment throughout the lead-up to the launch, but - conveniently - didn't count it in their additions. I hope their Treasurer is a bit better at keeping track of the funds than that! ;)

Liberals needed to go, no argument there. And this change in leadership is a good thing, can only make them stronger in the long run. A strong opposition makes for a more accountable Government.

Watched Rudd tonight on the ABC - he's still in election mode I think. :D He's impressive, no doubt about it.

NSW right wing now has a large block in liberal federal politics.

Watch the more small l Liberals from victoria etc disappear.

Then watch liberals implode, as they become increasingly more unelectable.

Oh joy Oh joy

This is why Costello quit, history says that Rudd will at least have 2 terms. Given the unpopularity of work choices etc the knives would be out for Costello from the moment that the Libs dont get back in at the next election. He knew it was over for him once they lost.

Oh beautiful, one more "smug media ****" (as the Chaser would put it) prancing around as our leader, as if Media Mike wasn't enough, I am only thankful that i now live on the Gold Coast and don't have to deal with Rann much at all.

I guess its time to say "good bye economy" and "hello exorbidant interest rates", lucky neither effect me terribly much at the moment.

All i can say is "don't blame me, I voted liberal!!!"

And for all its worth, Downer should lead the opposition.

Um, doesn't your first statement describe Downer perfectly? :p

Also, gives Costello some time to refresh himself on the back bench for a while & a possibility of making a challenge for leadership a year prior to the next election, should the opportunity present. I wouldn't completely write off his chances yet.

This raises the interesting question of who is the lesser of two evils between Downer and Abbott. If either of those two became leader it would be a great shame for this country, because we would have lost the potential to have the two major parties trying to do good positive things for the nation and worldwide as could happen if Turnbull becomes leader of the opposition.
I have nothing against the liberal party in general, only (to use someone elses material here) "a campaign of scare, threat and innuendo, inequality, exploitation of the vulnerable to benefit the rich and the drive of a two-tiered society with services to those who could pay". Oh and lets not forget the racism and wedge politics (not the TV show you clown :p).
Unfortunately if Abbott or Downer was to become leader then this would still be the case. I believe Turnbull would really have the best interests of the whole country at heart (plus the environment, which in my book is a big plus). A strong opposition with a slightly less right wing outlook would be great for the country, I would be very suprised but also disapointed if someone so similar to Howard were elected leader of the libs.
