Here's some news for GMac, apparently the Council are looking at getting rid of the Tennis Courts at Walker Park. The council have figures that show participation rates at the Tennis Club are well down, however, on closer inspection somehow the Council have used numbers gathered during the first year of Covid.
Isn't it the MFG during footy season.Just read the Master Plan for Walker Park posted at the Whitehorse Council in November and if this happens even you will be calling Walker Park the "MCG of the EAST"
Club has put a lot of work off field to update our facilities over the last 15 years plus with success.
The future of the tennis club there is a worry but hopefully something can be sorted out for them.

You seem to be very interested in Whitehorse monthly council meetings, lol.Isn't it the MFG during footy season.
I've seen it, and the report that the redevelopment of Nunawading’s Walker Park was met with a tepid response from local sporting clubs at a recent council meeting. What was discussed at tonight's meeting was that the Walker Ward, has the largest number of dogs of any Ward in Whitehorse. It is also the only Ward in Whitehorse without an off leash dog park. It looks like it is possible Walker Park will become an off leash dog park.
The excuse when they removed the tennis courts near the Nunawading Station was that there were other nearby courts at Walker Park.
Pity the poor old pigeon club's demise, can't be too may left. They will need to get Bill Lawry out the front with a protest sign.
The dog community seems to have quite an influence with the council, with a number of councillors among them. There are nearly 13,000 dogs in Whitehorse, or in council language, a lot of votes. Simpson Park is the most highly used off-leash park in Whitehorse. I know some dog owners would like to see the end footy and cricket in the Park, but there are too few ovals in Whitehorse, as you well know. Davy Lane is another popular off lead area and the dog owners have done a lot of complaining about the proposed ovals and change rooms. They seem to think they have the rights to the area even though cricket has been played there for 50 years. I suspect dog owners have been in the ears of the State and Federal Govt members, because neither has offered any money at all to help with funding of the build. This has left the Whitehorse council to either fund the entire project by themselves or put it on the backburner (which is what has happened). There is a off leash dog park at Simpson park not that far away.Does every Ward in Whitehorse really need a off lead dog park.
True that, I remember a practice match at Heathcote. Roo shit everywhereThey’re not mutually exclusive. Footy and cricket grounds can be off-leash areas and many already are. Sporting clubs use them for training and games and the rest of the time they’re off-leash. Usually pays to do a tour of the ground with the shovel before a game, but most people do tend to pick up their dog’s shit so there’s generally not much.
Much worse the further out you get when you have to dodge kangaroo shit at unfenced reserves!

I wouldn't believe that either the AFL or Cricket Vic would have even heard of the Davy Lane proposal. The council and Vermont Footy Club (who would use the grounds for juniors) should be letting the two groups know and Vermont should also be pressuring the Council to approach them. It's really the league's and the AFL's job and they should be advocating for it. If they can demonstrate a genuine shortage of grounds then it should have the AFL's and Cricket Vic's support as both have new community facilities in their strategic plans. That's where you can get government support as they do both manage government relatively well.
Then it's back on council, this money is available to upgrade your community facilities, gtfo of the way and let them spend it.
Having said that, when it comes to "ground shortage" it tends to be a purely mathematical game. Nobody at government level really cares about club history or practicalities. They'll just tell the clubs to share grounds if they need more space. Needs to be an overall problem in the area, there is x number of teams and x number of grounds, it's not enough.
There is a cultural shift away from Aussie rules.I wouldn't believe that either the AFL or Cricket Vic would have even heard of the Davy Lane proposal. The biggest problem footy clubs have at the moment is not grounds, its the unused grounds that are being gobbled up by soccer clubs. The real ground shortage is for cricket. Ask GMac. Footy grounds can be found but they may be some distance from your club. Available cricket ground are very scarce and sometimes grounds are use in other municipalities or sub standard grounds (like Davy Lane are used, no taps for water and no toilets, no amenities of any sort).
Having soccer clubs arrive in an area has both good (much easier to get improved facilities) and bad (increased junior participation means less kids at your nearby footy club) effects.
At my cricket club a soccer club moved in, they now have over 600 players. Over 100 adults (men and women) and around 500 juniors (boys and girls). No wonder there are less juniors at EB, which is only about 2Km away. Close enough for some of our juniors to use the ovals there for pre season training.
There is another soccer club about 1Km from EB with 300 juniors.
$1,000 a season is common. Most of it goes to Football Australia, mainly because of low attendance at A League games, except for Auckland. Also soccer clubs will tend to use kids as cash cows - charging big fees for ‘professional’ coaching as a means to finance the pro brought out from lower tier English/euro leagues

You wouldn’t see any AFL junior clubs charging $2.5k plus a season.Overcharging juniors to pay senior players??? Would never happen in our game!!![]()
