Now that it comes down to Andrew McGrath and Hugh McCluggage, who should we choose?

I'm completely in the middle right now. I think that McCluggage should be number 1 based on this year's performance, but who's game translates best into AFL?

I'd be happy with both, but I can't shake the feeling that McGrath will be the best player from this draft. He has the attributes that would make him a complete player and a star at AFL level.

On the other hand, McCluggage is a goal kicking mid that we need. Can kick it from basically any angle.

Tough task ahead for the recruiters. Regret is probably the biggest problem with having the number 1 pick if you fail to identify the best player.

In before moved to draft and trading thread.

Edit: do we actually still have a draft thread still? Or is it all in the trade thread?
I shall fight to keep this separate. Where is the independence from that crazy round-about?

If the thought of having Cousins but with aerial ability doesn't excite you - nothing will.
I'm guessing that you're talking about McGrath?

Watch his body work, inside grunt and breakaway speed at the centre clearances in this video (0.20, 0.29, 0.42, 0.45, 0.50) and tell me that hes "just a haf back".

Has so much ability to become a star mid. Reminds me a little bit of Judd with his first few steps out of the pack

McGrath seems like a safer bet than McCluggage but still a super player in his own right. I would be stoked to get McGrath, he has the leadership and attitude to make it at AFL and has a unique set of attributes from his athletics background. McCluggages lack of contested ball worries me.

Im leaning towards McGrath he seems like a guy that will transition to afl easily so to speak and even though I think think the leadership circle jerk that goes on about some ducking good blokes on this site is over the top, it is still an important trait to have.

That is taking nothing away from McCluggage who might be the more talented player and even develop into a great leader himself not that I would mind if he is ends up a great player who isnt captain material, I just think McGrath might be the safer bet.

There really is very little that separates them and all I really know about them is what I have read on this site and a couple of youtube vids.

Yeah that's exactly why I am leaning towards McGrath. Nothing in his game to me says that he can't go forward and kick a few running goals either.

With the game moving towards contested possession as you saw with Bulldogs, his breakaway speed from the pack and quick ball movement leads me to think that his game will translate better into AFL.

McCluggage has been a beast all year.

McGrath is the bolter.

I take the guy who has proven it all year long.
? McGrath has been a beast all year aswell. Barely "bolting" either, has been regarded by many in the top 5 bracket for a while now. Has only gained more traction as the number 1 pick with his great performances in big games and GWS flagging attraction in him. Also, Bontempelli was considered a bolter in his draft year so not necessarily a bad thing

Both very different players who offer different things and I think supporters need to understand what they can and can't do. McGrath's strengths are his speed and dash along with his leadership skills and ability to both attack and defend. His weaknesses are his size even though his leap makes up for it it's still a bit of an issue. His kicking is verbally good but can rush his kicks a bit. For McCluggage his clean hands, balance and goal kicking ability are his strengths. He knows how to win the footy on the outside and generally makes good and clean decisions. His weakenesses are his contested ability not that he can't win contested possessions more that he isn't the type to attack the footy in the midfield he seems to just slip in at times. Tackling technique is iffy, he will chase but doesn't chase with as much speed as he carries the footy. Honestly I think McCluggage suits us better but I think McGrath will end up the better player in the long run, it's a win win for me both should be worthy of number 1
