As unimpressed as I've been by Berry's early career form, I still think he will become an above average - if not very good - AFL player, and want to see that realised with us. Wingard's first year in 2012 was pretty unremarkable from memory - better than what Berry has produced, but not predictive of him winning AA honours in 2013. Curtin - I know completely dfferent player - was average at best until 6-8 weeks ago, and now he looks as dangerous as any young player in the comp and a second unicorn for the Crows alongside Thilthorpe. Point is, that Berry was recruited to fill a desperate need for us. Unless we directly replace him with someone better to play the same forward-of-centre role, we should hold onto him and see what he delivers next year.

Carr's sales pitch to Bergman was "about what the team looks like going forward".

If you take a half-glass full approach, Port has a decent first 22 with many players under 25.

Then you have the likes of Tom Cochrane, Joe Berry, Jack Whitlock, Xavier Walsh, Josh Lai, Logan Evans, Will Lorenz, Harrison Ramm, Mani Liddy etc. developing with upside to their game and all of a sudden this list could go somewhere.

I also maybe talking outside my own arse and overestimating the playing ability of the boys. 🤣

The only reason NWM would only sign 2 years and not 4 to get to free agency is if Bergs does go after 2 years in free agency then port match the offer and seek trade making it a NWM trade. That is only if saints want bergs and vise versa at that point. But 2 year deal otherwise for NWM seems off. He would either sign the 4 until 2029 free agency or he'd be seeking trade this season.

or just like bergs two years ago - he is only comfortable signing for two years at the moment.

NWM with 45 touches against the Hawks. He’s just a HBF’er though who has already peaked, one first rounder only should do it!?!

This bloke just runs around on a shit team, lose, gets 45 touches, oppo dont care to put attention to him because saints suck.

Looks like saints dont care to win, their main objective is to pass him the ball as much as possible.

lol stfu you moron. He is a bloody star of the game and he is only 22. You don’t just get “loose” and get 45 touches.

He is worth every bit of 1.2 million a year the Saints are offering.

FWIW, have a listen to Sam Mitchell’s comments about him in the presser.

Basically along the lines of “I knew he was good, but didn’t realise he was that good”.

Said they just couldn’t stop him, even though they scouted him heavily in the lead-up, and tried to tag him with 3 or 4 different blokes throughout the game.

No matter where he played, they just couldn’t stop him. And in the last quarter, he attended 6 centre bounces, and for the quarter he had:

15 disposals
12 kicks
6 score involvements
5 contested possessions
4 inside 50’s
3 rebound 50’s
3 clearances
2 centre clearances
2 tackles
2 behinds
386m-gained
52 fantasy points.

Mitchell joked that even when Nas was on the bench he was still worried about him!

Considering how much effort went into acquiring Berry, Port aren't gonna trade him away after one season.

That would be a HUGE SLAP to the entire list management and recruitment team. All that trade effort to get GC's first rounder and then trading up again to move two spots to get ahead of Freo to secure Berry.

Nah, you trade what you have.

They’d never have taken the pock last year so we spent it.

What it is now is Berry, so that’s what you spend.

It’s like upgrading your car.
