Who do you guys see as replacing these players in the 22 at the end of 2010 season (pressuming they retire).

I really like luke rounds, looks like a good natural footballer! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG93OpXyXgM

And Jarryd Blair: Tough and intelligent ball winner (although small)

P.S - Sorry if theres another thread like this Mods.

ideally we'd look for someone like blair to take obrees spot...

as for lockyer i think itll be macaffer. Good kick, a bit of dash...i think he'll be a great player

I've said all along that Sidebottom is going to be O'Bree's long term replacement, and he will be an improvement on O'Bree too.

Sidebottom has the rare ability to win the ball both inside of packs, and also outside, which will make him an improvement on O'Bree.

As for Lockyer, MaCaffer and McCarthy are the 2 most logical replacements for him, although McCarthy's injuries may hand this straight to MaCaffer.

I would predict both Lockyer and O'bree to still play plenty of senior football in 2010, but by 2011 they won't be on the list.

To "phase" both out over 2010 would be the most logical path of action.

@ Matty lets assume sidebottom is already in the 22 (he is a lock already). So we are talking about a new face in the squad.

Well to put it simply, we don't have an O'Bree replacement outside of Sidebottom, Blair is still at least 12 months away from being an AFL standard footballer, and the rest of our "young" mids are either too young (Rounds, Blight) or haven't showed enough (Cook, Stanley-delisted).

Beams will eventually step into O'Bree's role fulltime, The Caff will take the reigns from Lockyer and Blight from Johnson.

What about Blight:

Also Steele and Beams could be good for O'Bree Replacements

You can probably add Ben Johnson to that list of retirees(possibly Fraser if hes body cant cope and Presti). He probably wont be there for 2011 and beyond.
I agree with the above, Sidebottom/McCarthy/McCaffer will be the likely replacements and will hopefully get alot of game time next season to prepare them for years to come.

Blair for O'Bree. His agility and core strength in that video Dave posted, is on show.
Lockyer is more of a utility type so it could come from a number of different players.

i dunno if u actually ever REPLACE a player... but i reckon blight has a bit of jon hassel about him. Dont know if thats a good thing or not.

Absolutely spot on IMO too. Sidey will be an incredible in years to come and his kicking on both sides shits on most players let alone Cheesy that coughs it up. Sidey can kick torps on his left!

O'bree provides footy experience and directs the young players, he is also good for tying up a ball in a pack situations when needed coz he's got a hard reliable body..... but sooner rather then later the kids will learn where to run and O'bree skills and pace aint up to it. He is also very limited on where he can play.

O'bree and Sidey rotations in 2010 thanks..... I'd also chuck Toovey in that mix for the odd rotation too. The kid is hard.

Tarks ... ? Well, the guy is a pretty versatile as a utility so not sure if there's a "direct" replacement? I can see Tarks playing longer than Cheesy.

spot on

IMO McCarthy for O'Bree and MaCaffer for Lockyer pretty obvious but logical. Also agree on Rounds I thought he showed little patches of what he can do but him and Blight were underaged so they should naturally be alot better next year with a year under their belt :D

No need for direct replacements in their roles. Just because Macaffer is similar to Lockyer doesn't mean he'll replace Lockyer.

Manchester United brought in many spuds trying to directly replace Roy Keane's role, in the end a different system had a be used.

Not that Macaffer is a spud or anything at all, I rate him, but the two replacements for them will be the two best players not yet in the side, whoever that will be.

Good thread. Does anyone know the VFL 09 stats for Blight, Blair and Rounds, average possessions per game etc and where I can find these stats? I must admit Blair and Blight look quite good in those video highlights.

Thanks in advance

Luke Ball for O'Bree. (Wishful thinking)

Tarks plays the utility role as well as anyone i've see play. He's extremely versatile.
I think the Caff has all the attributes to be even better. Can play both tall and short. Has great hands.

What Smiddaz said.

Of course with team balance there a limitations but I think our up and coming group of mids have the talent to spread the workload in terms of ball winning so we won't need a flawed strictly inside type.

As for Tarks I think Didak played a similar running link role too Tarks ideal role most of the year. As has been mentioned Macaffer certainly has the versatlity and flexibility to play the bit part roles that Tarks has be been given. There is however nothing to stop the club picking an extra mid, foward or defender if that is a better option.

Geee, Blair looks good in those vids, thanks for posting those.

It may be just me, but god i can see a cross between Sam Mitchel and Ben Cousins in him.....I know his young and may never get to that standard, but definately looks to have potential.

I would dare say that if Blair wasn't so short he would be talked up alot more but people are concerned over his height but just look at Foley from Richmond he's a short arse yet everytime we play the tigers he kills us so I don't think height is as much of a worry as other people think :D Even Mark Fyne from SEN thinks he's a beauty :)

Sorry but I hope we never replace O'Bree. He is the definition of below average and the fact that he gets a game every week totally amazes me.

As has been suggested I think Macaffer looks like a replacement for Lockyer, can take a strong mark and has a bit of dash. Could be quite a handy player.

Agree with Beams & Caff but not sure on Blight. I thought he was more a HBF like Maxwell or Goldsack, positionally wise.

What is Johnson if not a rebounding defender?

Maxwell and Sack are both third talls who probably focus more on affecting an aerial contest than Blight will, although both those boys have rebounding aspects to their games they don't tend to run and carry as much as Blight. I'd be inclined to liken Blight more to Shaw in his style of play.
At a guess (without any stats) I'd think Blight is a bit smaller than those two as well, although I could be wrong, I just cbf'd looking it up.

HB: Shaw, Reid, Blight

Now we're talking, rebound central :thumbsu: Not even taking into account some action from Maxwell and H.

Der me think sidebottom too...

Thank you for you rather insightful and thoughout response... As they already play in the same 22 you would probably think someone outside our regular line up would come in to the team.

Regardless of what the OP has, when have two blokes ever come from outside the first 22 and walked straight into roles vacated by experienced veterans?

Natural progression usually implies that blokes already in the team, but not in such vital roles will step up to take the mantle (Eg. Beams and Sidebottom) whilst guys like Blair and Blight might step in to take a spot on the bench and fill the 10-15 games that the guys previously mentioned were filling.

I doubt we are going to directly replace two 200 gamers with two guys yet to debut :thumbsu:
