Odd events staged at ill-fitting stadiums

How about a boxing match at Adelaide oval with none of the fighters from SA? I suppose they will stick the ring next to the grand stand and put temporary seats on the oval. Will be hard to see from the back row.
That raised my eyebrows too. God you might as well be booking a flea circus at the MCG.

Wrestlemania 32 was held at AT&T Stadium earlier this year. Would almost rather not go than have to sit this high up.

What if it rains - it'll become an ever bigger farce.
At outdoor stadiums they have a large shelter over the ring.

one of the first soccer games I went to was at bramall lane - sheffield united.

I went and saw Sheffield United play the Olyroos at Seagulls Stadium/Tweed Heads as a kid. Don't know if the stadium is even there any more? I think it was behind the Twin Towns pokie place? Got to mix with the players after the game which was pretty cool. I can remember being in awe of Nathan Blake and Alan Cork.

Apparently photos or any information on this stadium are almost impossible to find. Got any?

Nah...I don't have any photos. It looks like there are a few videos on Youtube. The Gold Coast Seagulls Rugby League team used to play there for a bit. I think they may have then changed their name to the Chargers or something like that.

Two Formula 1 Grands Prix where also held in Ceasar's Palace Car Park in the early 1980s. Crazy stuff.

The old ChampCar World Series (which visited the Gold Coast most years) held races at Burke Lakefront AIRPORT in Cleveland, yes an AIRPORT. Always a multi car stack in turn 1 but you could overtake just about anywhere. An event at Edmonton followed in the series' dying years. They also raced in a couple of car parks in Denver and Houston.

I also recall a round of an Australian Triathlon Series being held within the confines of a velodrome in Adelaide, with a 20 lane swimming pool in the middle and the bike and run legs held around the velodrome.

In terms of Baseball venues in Australia, games I remember the old ABL being played at include...

- Waverley
- Moorabbin
- Norwood
- Whitten Oval (The Footscray Football Club for a time owned the licence of the Melbourne Monarchs, didn't last long and the team moved to the purpose built ball park in Altona)
- Parramatta Stadium (Right field was ridiculously short)
- Concord Oval (a Rugby ground best remembered for Serge Blanco's daylight robbery of the Wallabies in the 1987 RWC Semi, the Sydney team played there before the Showgrounds was complete. The same showgrounds the GWS Giants call home as you know was the Baseball stadium for Sydney 2000)
- QSAC
- Carrara
- RNA Showgrounds (Same venue where test cricket was first played in Brisbane in the early Bradman years)
- The WACA

Let's not also forget the days of Princes Park, Thebarton Oval and Victoria Park being used as NSL venues in the 1990's.

But for unusual venues, nothing will ever beat the Kingborough Sports Centre in Hobart, original home of the Hobart Tassie Devils before they moved to the Derwent. Not because it wasn't a basketball venue (It was), but because of what the court looked like.....

Norwood was still used for baseball up until last year. The Bite will play their first game at their new Adelaide Shores home this weekend.

Maybe Norwood will now have grass inside the southern 50 once again :D

Sebring Raceway in Florida has been in existence for decades and is part of the Sebring airport - still commercially operating. The racetrack crosses the runways a few times. They run 24-hour races there, and many drivers have 'got lost' due to being unable to see exactly what is racetrack and what is runway.

I went to the baseball at the Old South Melbourne ground. Mind you, I've also watched soccer, football and athletics there. Well used, that ground..........

Does the Sydney Kings playing in a very sparsely populated Qudos Bank Arena could as an event in an odd-fitting stadium.

I guess the stadium is the right fit it's just generally about 30% full for Kings games.

The Kings would have to be the worst-attended "successful" (on-court/on-field) sporting team in Australia, dating back to when they played in 5 GF series in 6 years (2003-2008) and playing at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

I'd use the term 'successful' with the Kings loosely. Outside 2003-08, they've been pretty ordinary.

Interesting thread.
I attended an American football college game at vfl park around 1986. It rained all day and we were miles from the field of play.
This thread reminded me I attended a baseball game at Carrara around 1992. After the game there were some kids getting autographs from the players- surely the most worthless autographs in history.

I saw Australia beat New York Cosmos at the old Sydney show ground in 1979. Australia won 2-1. Franz Beckenbauer, Dennis Tueart, Johann Neeskens played for Cosmos. The crowd was about 60,000. It was a pretty amazing day. I'd never seen anything like it in my life before. It was a great win by part timers against a team of famous professional players of the time.
