Well folks, draft day is finally here.

So many hopes. So many dreams. So many, many posts.

As you were.

Emma Quayle's Phantom Draft

8.
BRISBANE LIONS
TOBY GREENE
VITAL INFORMATION From Oakleigh Chargers, 18, 180cm, 76kg. Inside midfielder who gets first hands to the ball.
THE RATIONALE The Lions need new blood for most parts of the ground. At pick eight, they need to pick the best player on offer.
BEST-LAID PLANS Nick Haynes and Sam Docherty are both chances here, with Billy Longer and Devon Smith considerations too.

12.
BRISBANE LiONS
SAM DOCHERTY
VITAL INFORMATION from Gippsland Power, 18, 185cm, 83kg. Skilful running defender.
THE RATIONALE the Lions have been keen on him for a while. Again, they just need to get talent in.
BEST-LAID PLANS Brisbane's also big on Nick Haynes as a key forward target. He could go there, which would probably see Docherty get to the Western Bulldogs at 17.

30.
BRISBANE LIONS
TOM DOWNIE
VITAL INFORMATION From North Ballarat Rebels, 18, 203cm, 94kg. Former national level junior basketballer who has played just a handful of games of footy.
THE RATIONALE The Lions need to get one or two rucks in. Downie has a lot of athletic potential and won't make it to their next pick, 47.
BEST-LAID PLANS Henry Schade, should the Gold Coast somehow pass, is a chance here.

Finally had a look at the players we've been 'linked' to highlights.

Greene's video is mainly against Qld, so it's not a great representation.

Docherty looks to have great speed and foot skills and the comparison with Hanley is spot on.

Haynes is my favourite. His skill level stands out from all the highlight videos I've watched, reads the ball really well and a good comparison IMO iis Karnezis but with a bit more pace. Wouldn't mind another Patty K :D

Adams looks really good at working his way through congestion but Greene seems to be the higher rated inside mid and it sounds like he will be available at 8 and 12.

I tried not to get too attached to any of the players, but I've gone and got my heart set on Docherty. The other picks I'm fairly undecided about.

In previous years the draft was done in the morning. It's going to be a bit different twiddling thumbs all day waiting.

Isn't this exciting? Sad, though, as it'll be a few months of waiting after this before any real excitement comes up again.

I think I've got my heart set on Greene. He just seems like a player who you know will make the right decision. In saying that, Docherty looks brilliant too. A bit unsure on Haynes, but only due to the fact that he's named as a forward but only seems to kick one goal in his highlights package.

Think I might pop down to the training session at Coorparoo at 4 before the draft. Make a day out of it. Uni holidays are brilliant.

This is true but it should be enjoyable to watch and will make it all the more exciting.

Can't wait!

Got my heart set on Greene as well. From his small video, there are just some little things that catch my eye. He reads the taps very well, he stands in tackels very well, and he has a very quick hand ball. He doesn't dish off to the first person he sees, he finds the best option, unless the first person is the best option, and then they receive a lightning quick handball. These kinds of attributes would really work well with our existing mids i think.

Docherty also seems like a nice fit, skillful backman would be great. We are a much better team with Drummond fit and firing, but he is near the end, so someone with an elite long kick would be nice. I'd like 2 of Greene/Docherty/Sumner if Tomlinson is gone, then go tall at 30 and 47.

Hasn't been for a couple of years, but then some of us have work to distract us during the day. ;)

If they miss him, they can take another ruckman this draft, and maybe look towards getting a star ruck next year with the #1 pick that they will have.

Grundy would be an obvious choice next year, but GWS could easily be picking as low as 4th or 5th if Port and GC win less than four games next year (priority picks ahoy) and GWS happens to sneak a win more than either or them.

Tomlinson + Greene for me. Greene looks like such a hard inside nugget which is what we've been missing at stoppages (just having Rich doesn't cut it and Blackie is gone soon).

Talia for 30 and no idea who for 47.

Longer seems a bit too expensive at 8.. especially with Leuy around Longer won't have many first ruckman opportunities.

I was convinced that we should take Longer at 8 but now confess to myself that it was more to do with stuffing up 'The Giant Gubby'.

Really like Emma Q's stuff.

Docherty would push Hanley to the middle I guess joining Banfield and Polec as additions. Speed improving. Josh Green has that small forward position to make his own. Ash stays forward now and Bartlett starts his career in the back line.

Is there room for both Greene and Harwood in the same team with Blacky? If they worked well together, we would really have some clearance specialists for the post Black era.

Love the Draft, it is the day new hope comes to the club.

bob... I'm throwing it out there, the "giggity giggity" post over a bunch of fit young lads... don't worry, we'll always accept you for who you are.

Well I hadn't thought about it that way... :o (Trust you, Slatts).

Could've been worse:

I've been considering that too. Harwood + Greene + Bartlett + Green + Beams is an awful lot of grunt.

I know I ask this every year (and every year I'm disappointed) but are they still doing the stupid "top 10 countdown" (picks 10 to 1 in order), then the rest?

Or have they changed it back to how it should be (1 drawn first etc etc)?

Yeah, I'm totally on board with the excitement about Greene. He looks like the kind of player Vossy would love. Some of the video reminded me a bit of Craig Lambert, who I'm sure made a big impact on Voss early in his playing career.

I feel that unless someone really obvious is left out of the top seven, we won't take any chances and wil snap up Greene at #8.

I liked it so much better when we grabbing Greene at 8 and TomlinSon at 12 in the other thread...thank god draft day is here.

Here's hoping for this combo
8. Tomlinson/longer
12. Greene
30. Schade
47. Downie

NB: if we get Longer, pick 47 wouldn't be Downie.

Personally I am not so high on Greene. Not because I don't rate him as a player I just have high hopes for the likes of Josh Green and Harwood. Both are clearance specialists and I would like us to instead concentrate on getting some pace or quality into our side. I rate Docherty ahead of Buntine and coming off half back he would be a great addition I am thinking as would Sumner.

My read on things:

Wingard - I still expect to be picked at 5 although EQ did not follow through this morning with her late mail yesterday that he was back in the picture for GWS.
WHE - Port if miss on Wingard will take him.
Longer - GWS can't take the chance on passing on him and will take him at 7.
Tomlinson - I think GWS have been bluffing and I also think the Lions only rate him at 12 not particularly at 8. Don't be surprised if the Lions pass on him even if he is there at 8 and see if GWS were really interested in him. I think he is every chance to be taken at 12 but we could get nervous and take him to be sure and rely on someone else falling.
Downie - I am thinking EQ has heard that Brisbane have promised to pick him and has structured her draft around that ie having GWS pass on Longer to go with Tomlinson and then having us overlook Longer.
Docherty - the real target at 12 if Tomlinson is gone or we take him early although if Sumner or Greene is there we might be tempted.
Greene - could slip.
Schade - GC, Saints, Adel big chances to take him before we pick and from EQ's article we may have committed to Downie at 30.
Frost - slider. Will he last to 47? Probably not.
Murdoch - lock to Carlton.
Bootsma - I have no idea why but the mail is that EQ is on the money with him to North.
Elton - lock to the Saints.

No idea about 47 but if we miss on Tomlinson and go with Downie at 30 surely we have to take a KPD.

You don't really have a horse in there for pick 8 if pick 12 is for Tomlinson and Greene "could slip". ;)

I'd be a lot happier with Tomlinson at 12 than 8. My hope is that GWS goes for Longer at 7, because it means we get better options and I don't get upset that we passed on probably the best available talent at that point. One or two of Greene, Sumner and Docherty sounds pretty tasty.

My personal hopes at each pick.

8. Tomlinson just ahead of Greene
12. Docherty
30. Schade
47. Manson if available, otherwise Downie or Brown.

Good order there. Got a nasty gut-feeling that Tomlinson will go to GWS at pick 7 though, so it'll be Greene at 8.

Docherty is a good choice for 12, and he should be available.

I also have a gut feeling Schade may get taken somewhere in the 20's so perhaps Dobosz or even Talia would be a good consolation.

Manson would be AWESOME at 47... He's so hyped though. Most of it's hyperbole by the media, but where there's smoke, there's fire...
