so its official - the boycott is over?

You seem to ask me that question at least once a week and I've answered it twice before already.

What's the matter? Didn't like my answer the first two times, eh? :D

Re: Bryce Gibbs on 9 News Tonight. Quick!

I'll grant you it's exciting picking up a good talent throught the F&S rule.
But you can afford to be more excited about the tidbits Allen Stewart will find you around #50. Historically these bargain picks will be playing quality football for you sooner than 'rave review' teenagers, or the sons of heroes from days gone by.

If he turns out as good as Griffen or Cooney and we get him under the F/S imagine what the other clubs would be like

If they say anything it will be hypocrisy... what about Darcy, Cousins, Jonathon Brown etc. It's either everyone gets through, or no one.

Despite being entirely jealous of you guys getting a guy like Bryce Gibbs through f/s, I guess these things have a way of evening out... whether it be soon or in 20 years time.

I have heard Stewart say that Gibbs is good enough to play AFL now

The perfect retort. I'll go now.

Agreed.

All clubs have the opportunity to snare players father/son, and I wouldn't want to see it mediated just because a player might look a hotter prospect than others.

Good luck to the AFC.

Gibbs has certainly been getting a wrap. I don't know a lot about him though, but presumably he's a midfielder?

Hope he's as good as is suggested, as the sport is all the better for having a good flow of gun youngsters coming through.

thats true, but i dont think hes doing any recruiting though which is a shame. And your right that one father/son selection aint going to be the answer to all our problems. We need to snag alot of 2nd and 3rd rounders in the next couple of yrs to be successful. Jimmy has a bit of work to do.

I guess some of us feel we were a bit duped by not getting first rights at the Cornes boys (under the current rules we would have) so if these things do even out we are certainly due for some luck in this area.

IIRC you had first shot at Kane, but didn't capitalize on that one ;)

Seb Paynter (John Paynter's son) is running around in the Sturt U17s and looking the goods at this level.

Round 6 Vs Glenelg - Seb Paynter again was solid all day on and around the ball.

Best: James Hughes, Tom Anderson, Nick Wark, Seb Paynter, Henry Hodge, John McDonald

Round 5 Vs West - Seb Paynter on the ball provided the forwards with opportunities to compete one on one.

Best: Tom Hurley, Jack Martin, Nick Wark, Seb Paynter, Henry Hodge, James Byers

Round 4 Vs North - ably supported by Seb Paynter.

Best: Dylan Hogarth, Tom Anderson, Seb Paynter, James Byers, Tom Hurley, Henry Hodge, Jack Martin

Round 3 Vs Eagles - Seb Paynter worked well in combination, swapping between half forward and on the ball.

Best: Tom Hurley, Darren Hein, Tom Anderson, James Smith, Seb Paynter, Dylan Hogarth, Josh Irwin

Round 2 Vs Port - while Seb Paynter was solid all day.

Best: Joshua Irwin, Tom Hurley, John McDonald, Dane Winra, Darren Hein, Seb Paynter, Dylan Hogarth

Sturt had the bye in Round 1 of the SANFL.

Given that he's 15 going on 16 perhaps a target for the future for us.

he is 16 going on 17 in sept.

If he were available as a 3rd rounder under the f/s rule we would have nabbed him for sure.

The problem was we decided to use our first round pick on Angwin ( ) and he was gone to Port before we had a chance to nab him with our second round pick.

Story on Bryce tonight, channel 9 news!

Will be on soon!

Gets, you shouldn't place too much on the little footage on the news, but from what he showed, he is going to be one mighty midfielder. In just about every highlight, he displayed good, clean hands particularly when reading the ball of the ground.

Your club is on a winner there.

ps..Ross Gibbs wasn't that good was he?? ....maybe its not ..... ;)

...Why? do you think his ego could get any bigger than it already is?
More to do with huge pressure to perform rather than his ego. I have never met the lad or seen him play but a lot of people have said he has a HUGE ego.

Even the biggest egos can crumble under pressure. There will be enough pressure on the lad without media continually pumping up his tyres. This is the 2nd time in less than 12 months that channel 9 has run a story about Bryce.

Re: Bryce Gibbs on 9 News Tonight. Quick!

On the positive side, it could prepare him for the media scrutiny and spotlight that will inevitably come if he's any good anyway.

I find it hard to believe that Stewart has been chased by the Crows for years now simply to work in player development/support. Surely Fantasia might just happen to drop by and casually suggest a trip to a footy carnival in Derby or Devenport for light relaxation. All the while with tape recorder running......

I can add my two bits in here - my dad taught him last year and has had a few chats with him. His impression is that bryce's head is definetly 'in the right place' and he knows that footy won't last forever and has been concentrating on getting good results so he can go to uni as well as pursue his footy dream. Never heard anything about a huge ego from dad - but then again most 15 year olds that are taught by my father voluntarily call him sir :D

Even welshy when he sees him around still calls him 'sir' sometimes - it's funny to hear!

Same could be said with Jesse Smith and Morton I guess. These guys were both touted as first rounders.
Smith = Top 5

Adelaide also had pick 12 in that draft - and traded it to Port for Matty Bode - so technically 2 opportunites to draft K Cornes

Re: Bryce Gibbs on 9 News Tonight. Quick!

At the time I don't think Kane was worth pick 7. I still don't. However, we should have taken S Burgoyne instead of trading pick 12 for Bode.

And it would be a brave man that would tangle with your father's daughter as well!! ;)

Exactly. By that reasoning, we obviously thought a more experienced Bode was better value than a new draftee (Cornes). Ouch.

Having said that, the point was we missed out on the opportunity to nab the Cornes boys with FS selections and we definitely would have taken both of them if we only had to give up third rounders.

That's a very interesting point. The fact that Angwin ( ) wasn't worth it doesn't mean that K Cornes was. Good player, not knocking him, but I'd want better out of pick 7 and I wouldn't criticise the recruiters for not taking him then.

good pt unfortunately. Thompson went at 16 too, the guy we paid 12 for this yr, so pick 12 that yr had extremely high value. Once again whoever did the trades needs a bullet. Bode was always just a player not much else, i actually think he has a few friends in the media really, cornesy especially. Gets undeserved praise for his ball 'hunting' abilities and being the crows only 'natural' ball winner, when really they dont seem to be having too much trouble atm without him. What bode's little fan base seem to forget, is that you actually have to dispose of the ball once you get it, which is actually quite important ;)

and if jack sees him kick around the body ever again...........
