Because we haven't drafted small forwards for about 4 years. That said Jetta has improved over the distance and Davey has got worse over the distance. Jetta stays, Davey doesn't. And I've long thought this. Doesn't help Davey is useless below his kees. That said, one thing the Carlton backs did very well was block. Everytime Jetta and Davey went to chase down someone they'd get blocked. Our defenders meanwhile.....

Damn, not many (if any) positives to take out of today except that guys got to experince finals footy. Were smashed across the park, especially in the mid-field. Our entry into the 50 was rushed and woeful (credit to carlton for their pressure) and I don't know what was going on in our backline but it was laughable. Not one bomber defenfer seemed to be able to read the drop of the ball correctly and it was far too easy for the Blues forwards to get loose.

There should be hard looks at a few players over this offseason, I'm just not sure who's ready to come into the senior team to make it more competitive.

The positive I guess is that we made the finals, next goal is to actually win one....

**EDIT** - Love the Homer quote to start this thread. Gotta go, my damned weiner kids are listening...

No defensive structure (although it's hard when the ball is peppering the D50 all day long). Bad week for Dean Wallis' world to turn to shit.

Monfries was good today, stood up when it counted.
Brent Stanton was again good.

We certainly looked small, slow, lazy and down right knackered, think we need to recruit some kids who can get some midfielders that we can put some size into them over a couple of pre seasons, really looked slow and got pushed off the ball far to easily throughout the game and against the better teams.

I am not willing to go trolling for the negatives at this stage – we have come too far this year already to allow our bitterness get the better of us at this stage.
  • Hocking did a fantastic job on Judd.
  • Rider had a good game in the ruck and was effective around the ground. He needed some support but did well largely on his own.
  • Hurley provided a contest wherever he went – though in truth he was forced to go up the ground to get his kicks too often.
  • Angus also did well as a link-man though his kicks were gained in the wrong half of the ground.
  • The team’s pressure in the first quarter was great.
Overall this season has been even to middling – with a bullet. That is a great deal better than we have been over the past few years. We have much to look forward to over the coming seasons and much to be proud of already. We have a number of players who will really benefit from another pre-season or two.
It is sad to see the boys bow out in week one, and to Carleton, and by 10 goals. But thems the breaks. They are ahead of us in terms of development – but we didn’t tank.

Cheers EFC. The future looks bright indeed.

Re: SLATTERY WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT - Official Carlton EF review thread

If someone can explain to me why Davey and Jetta are on our list I'd like to hear it.

Davey's a fumbologist, but Jetta's still got upside. He was consistently among our best for the middle patch of the season, which doesn't exactly sound like a glowing recommendation, but there you go.

I think we got showed up today for fitness more than anything else.

At the start of last pre-season the new coaching staff could not believe the condition the players were in. Did we really believe we could catch up in one pre-season?

A lower fitness base to work off, especially at this end of the season can make some players look like they were not trying, when really they are physically spent.

Carlton were a better physically prepared team and it showed big time today. While watching I was getting furious as to why or how so many Carlton players could get so far away from the Essendon opponents. When I sit back with clearer thought it makes sense.

It might also explain why we struggled against Port. Their fitness levels are atrocious and it was only for that reason that we were able to come back.

Jetta has improved a lot this season. He deserves more time on the list to show he can improve again. He looked tired. I single him out as a few people say he doesn't deserve to be on our list, I disagree with those people.

A new fitness coach, a second pre-season of pure unadulterated hard work ethic will help no end next year.

Our list will need adjustments, but is on the right track.

A game I would prefer to forget but at the same time Carlton did and should have won when you compare the whole year of the respective teams.

Re: SLATTERY WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT - Official Carlton EF review thread

Jetta definitely has some upside, I was probably too harsh on him, but losing to Carlton like that makes you say stupid things.

Still think he should play more on the wing, does he have the tank ?

That was real hard to watch!
We were embarrassing today. No other club I can think of falls apart as easily as we do. We play some great and gutsy football at times, but boy do we fold like limp schoolgirls at others. No mental strength and a complete unwillingness at times to work hard defensively.

Watching the other finals this weekend, I thought that there were parts of the game when Collingwood and Geelong were getting badly beaten in clearances and contested possession. But their defensive structures and numbers back in defence held up and they did not get badly hurt on the scoreboard during those times. We are pathetic in that regard!!!

We were patting ourselves on the back earlier in the season about how our defensive structure had improved. Think again!! We have a long way to go there. There is an unwillingness to work hard to get back in numbers and help each other out defensively.

Kick ins .....where do you start? At both ends, disastrous! Our "zone", once the opposition win the ball around our 50m line and kick it beyond the centre is terrible. We always get beaten in reacting defensively to get back into the space. We get more coast to coast goals kicked on us than any other "good" side.

On the good side, Hocking, Monfries and Stanton stood up today. And I thought Carlisle was good defensively. He didn't get the ball much, but was always in the contest with his opponent and did well a number of times. How about his effort to deny Gibbs the goal (when he hurt his shoulder and Betts got the follow up kick off the ground).

I don't want to knock individuals but there were some big disappointments today. Hille, Zaharakis, Myers, Jetta, Hurley (foot an excuse?). Heppell's worst game of the year. Don't even let me think about Hardingham (mental strength required a la Mark Thompson's half time comments).

Enough!!

Look! get over it. We were steamrolled by a better team. No good maligning our players. If you want to scream shit, go outside your front door - not here, please.

yeah! I feel like a a piece of **** right now, so I just don't want to talk shit no more.

Needs to work massively on his defensive game. He's got the tank, he's got the talent, it's the effort that's really in question. Which can be remedied. When he's on fire he's great, but if he's even that little bit off his as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

Re: SLATTERY WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT - Official Carlton EF review thread

No words to express my dissapointment.

Few points:
Tank throughout preseason cup next year, it's not worth exhausting ourselves.
Cut the dead wood, Hird has to show some balls.
Something's gotta be done about these constant injuries, over our inconsistent lineup.
SHOW SOME ****ING HEART WHEN IT MATTERS, BOYS.

Re: SLATTERY WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT - Official Carlton EF review thread

Pretty poor today. Once again, Stanton proves the haters wrong.

Looking forward to the start of next season and getting our injured guys back.
God I hope we draft a small forward though.

WOW that sucked donkeys b*lls....what was worse was I nested between Carlton supporters.

The highlight of my day was watching a fight 2 rows in front of me in AFL members.

At least it was over by half time, it cuts deep but not as deep as 99.

VERY good point. Carlton players were able to make it to multiple contests and leave there man 10-20m behind, especially into their forward line. We have to be faster and faster for longer. Being able to produce in spurts is great if you're a pr0n star, not so great if you're an AFL team. Having said that, not sure which I'd rather be known as....

Got beaten, well mabe more embarrassed by a better more prepared and seasoned team today.
Aside from the fact that it probably should have been another 100 point elim final loss, there were far more positives to come out of the season than in 09.
At least we are pointed in the right direction this time.
Although i must say i am sick of having players injured during games against top teams...

For the most part (90%), thanks for the efforts put in by everyone at the club. Lets strive to fix that last 10%...

I'm not sure I agree, you need really great stamina to be a pr0n star...:D

Lovett-Murray, McVeigh, Davey and maybe Hille

And there's the difference between today and 09 where we had the above + Lloyd, Lucas, McPhee, Welsh etc playing regularly. Lovett-Murray's getting games because he's a big guy. That'll change in the off season hopefully.

If you are saying they have to go phone I agree here, all four are not going to take us to the next level and Hille certainly would have trade value, and sheeds might like the other 3...Anyone got his number? Get on the phone Hirdy, time to be ruthless...Welsh and Slattery should be in the same boat also..

FFS Phone, NLM was average, but so were most others. If he goes then so should Welsh and Mcveigh and Hille. Annoys me that people single him out (including the guy behind me today who I reminded that NLM set up our first goal). Jetta was by far our worst. But he is young and is still learning.

The most annoying thing was that their game plan was so obvious yet we did not respond.
