Either way, it's a balls up

The EU version on the investigation is happening, not ours.

We are in a trade war, with much of the business we are losing going to the USA

With Biden in it's likely a detente with china will be found between those two, and we continue with our one man trade war against an up and coming superpower.

What's our end game on this? We have gotten into a fight for no gain, with one ally (who is doing jack to support us), and no exit plan.

If our aim wasn't sucking up to trump, we have failed
We arent driving a trade war with china. Australian hasnt banned any imports from china.

That's sounds reasonable, but our original inquiry was designed to provoke. It specifically targeted China, and wanted to give investigators powers equivalent to weapons inspectors.

We are either incredibly naive or were deliberately picking a fight
Or just maybe it was designed to figure out what actually happened so it wouldnt happen again. This wasnt the first time viruses have been released from china in the past twenty years. Australia never demanded reparations and only ever wanted an independent enquiry. Millions are dead ffs.

and how stupid are we - we are doing the USA's work of banging the drum, and we are paying the price on their behalf

you dont send inspectors in with nuclear inspector powers for something like that - thats not about independence, thats about intimidation

this isnt about the Trump and US ffs. Chinas authoritaranism is a threat to australians, to the world and to the chinese people.

us citizens are in fact the ones least impacted by the rise of authoritarian china.

so australia single handed will do regime change in China via pointing our finger at them?

ScoMo will need to do a lot more than just praying to achieve that outcome

We banned Huawei and ZTE from our 5G rollout, that's a large part of what they are pissed with us about. They are describing our actions on Huawei as the precursor to their current trade blocks against us.

We did this after US pressure, just like many other countries did (Belgium, Brazil, Canada, quite a lot of others)

Thats not trade though. Thats foreign investment. And complaints from them would be complete hypocrisy given how difficult it is to invest in their country.
