Offsiders Draft of varying degrees of relativity

From an Essendon point of view I think you have done very well.

I would love Tapscott, and along with Christenson and Vardy, we are covering several areas. A lot of phantoms have us drafting 4 mids which is unlikely.

Honestly I have only seen Kennedy play twice, so obviously not that much and I have had to rely upon opinion for some of this draft. PS every player has weeknesses so don't get touchy!!

I only had Houghton coming to Brisbane as we need a tall back up player and he was next best, A tall at the third round should be better than later on, and the mids even out more.

A really good mix for Essendon. Two inside mids, a flanker, and a tall. Not sold on Vardy, but depending on Laycock & Hille's injuries it isn't exactly a stupid move.

Cheers!

does anyone know whats going to happen to brayden norris great athlete won the beep tes equally the best ever score 15.6 along with jarryd mcveigh will he go to Sydney at pick 54 or 55?

Will probably go either late in this draft or early in the rookie draft. As you said elite endurance, good pace yet poor skills IMO, and doesn't rack up huge numbers. Not a natural inside player, more of an outside winger or half forward.

Offsider,

A question I'm asking of the modk drafters who have watched the kids. On Talia, what is his scope to play as a midfielder? There have been numerous mentions of his versatility, playing CHF mostly, CHB at the Champs and spending some time in the midfield at the champs. A number of "midfield like" references have been made by a number of commentators - clean hands, did some good clearance work, runs all day, smart footy user. There are also some nice to haves such as marking ability and could be ready soon.

It sounds to me he could play a Mark Bolton/C. Kornes/Hird/Goodes style role (obviously hopefully better than the Bolton end!).

So, to ask it again, does Talia have scope to play and be picked as a midfielder primarily, who could also play KP if you really need him to?

I think that he would play a similar style of mid as Goodes, without the flair. He has the potential to play as a mid, with his hands below his knees and his speed/agility. I have doubts on whether he will be able to consistently play as a midfielder at AFL level, at the U18's he was more of a pinch hitter who provided a bigger body (he may continue this role at AFL).

IMO his disposal and decision making is a bit suspect under pressure, and in close this could be more of an issue. His hands in close though are very good. But I see his position as a CHB in the mould of a Bock, as his defensive skills are top notch.

Hats off.:thumbsu:

James Craig a likely fourth rounder?

James Craig is one of the hardest players to place IMO, could go as early as second round and as late as the Rookie draft. IMO he slips because I don't think he will have a position at AFL level. Too short to be a ruck, to slow to be a KPD, so his only option is as a CHF/FF, which is doubtful.

I have updated my phantom after a while, apologise for the delay. As it all would not fit on the first page, apparently too long. It is now finished there are some players who were unlucky to miss.

Pick 60: Saint Kilda – Pass (PSD)
The Saints are in Premiership mode and may top up in the PSD, if available in the ND I think that they may consider Russel Robertson as a third tall. Otherwise I would consider Hill here or Sumner, Weedon is another option.

Pick 61: Adelaide – Tom Hill
Adelaide has gone small so far, and with Hill here I think they could use a KPF/Ruck prospect who can act as a second ruckman and provide a good option up forward. Overlooked last year and injured for a lot of this year, Hill hasn’t really had a chance to enhance his draft status, but I rate him highly and think that he has a lot of potential. He is predominantly a forward, but can play as a second ruck as well, as a forward he is capable of being very good, on potential but he has not performed very well. He is quick and very agile for a big forward, and if taught well should be able to achieve separation on the lead. He can also take a contested mark, although he needs to bulk up so he does not get pushed out. He is not a natural reader of the play IMO, but he is not bad either and as a ruckman he does not get many disposals round the ground. His skills are reasonable but not a highlight, his kicking could use some work, and his handballing is good without being super slick. His hands below the knees are a bit of an issue for mine, he is not consistently one touch although he does compete well, and he could work harder on his defensive pressure. His tapwork also needs some work, but in general he should have a lot of development left in him. He has slipped a fair bit due to injury, and not being picked up last year. I did consider big Serhat here, but Hill has more potential than him.

Pick 62: Collingwood – Miles Sewell
Collingwood could use some inside ball winners, and as a mature age player Sewell could fix that problem immediately. Sewell won the medal for best VFL player this year, and will probably get picked up with teams needing hard first-dibs players. He is not an athlete but a footballer, he only has reasonable pace but his endurance is quite good. He wins clearances and can dish out a handball well to runners, his kicking is good without being great. He is very similar to his brother, but may need more bulk. I did consider Temel here as a forward option, but Sewell replaces an immediate need.

Pick 63: Western Bulldogs – Byron Sumner
Doggies to get a speedy winger in Sumner, who is very agile with a long left kick, and can break the lines with his pace. I could see him either playing as a winger at AFL level or as a half-forward, who can push up the ground and deliver to the forwards and push forward and crumb off packs. His kicking is very good, he has a nice long smooth kick that when coupled with reasonably good decision making means he will hit a high percentage of targets over 55m. His inside work is not very good, and it will be an issue at AFL level, as he may get pushed off the ball more, although he does have quite a strong nuggety build, but he lacks the inside finesse and hands to become a good player. He is quite good overhead for a small fellow, although he may struggle at AFL in contested situations. I think that is endurance needs to improve, but once he does he should become a reasonably good player, with line breaking ability and good disposal, that will suit a speedy dog’s outfit very nicely. I have issue on how he will handle the step up to AFL level with his size and outsideness (is that a word?), but he has a good chance of making as he has a few tricks. I did consider Weedon here as a half forward, and Hicks as a small crumber, but Sumner is a better prospect.

Pick 64: Saint Kilda – Pass

Pick 65: Geelong – Pass

A few notes on the draft, not much separates the third and fourth round prospects, include fifth in that as well. There are some good prospects still, but all have question marks over meaning some will not make it some will. Also with Sydney I am adding two more picks onto the 4 they already have, as I presume that Goodes and Kirk will move onto the Veterans list.

5th Round

Pick 67: Richmond – Garrick Weedon
Many rate him highly and he will probably go third round or even fourth round, but from what I have seen he has not performed that well, but his second half of the year at Colts was from all reports excellent, so I don’t know what to think? He is a good athlete, not exceptional though and has good evasiveness and many rave about his awareness which is really impressive from what I have seen. I see him playing as a HFF/FP, not as a mid who has excellent defensive pressure and can kick goals but provides more in assists. He has reasonable skills yet they are not really a highlight, but are good enough to hit most targets. He has good pace which allows him to crumb the ball nicely, and he is a good mark overhead, which add some more strings to his bow. I think that he will make a good small/medium forward who can push up the ground but provide a lot of pressure, although he is not a massive goal kicker. I did consider Robbie Hicks as a small forward and Harms as a medium half forward.

Pick 72: Richmond – Jason Tutt
Richmond will continue to pick into the later stages of this draft, and they get a player who could go a lot higher IMO, but slips as I rate others higher. Richmond interviewed him at Draft Camp and appears to be very interested in him, as a small HBF, with good pace and very good footskills who will run out of defence. His height is an issue for mine as he maybe exposed in the air during marking contests, although in his defence he needs to put some muscle on. His kicking is elite over 50m+ and he has exceptional decision making skills, which means he hits almost every target even under pressure. His attack on the ball is also very good and he can win it in contests and also lay a tackle. I could see him moving onto the wing if he builds his endurance and able to win the inside ball but predominantly an outside player who uses his elite skills to great effect. He can also break the lines with his pace, but he needs to bulk up or else risk been rag-dolled around. I think he has a fair bit of development left and at best could be an excellent winger. I did consider Dylan McNeil and Mark Hutchings but Tutt has more upside and potential.

Pick 73: Hawthorn – Pass (PSD)

Pick 76: Brisbane – Dylan McNeil
Brisbane need some inside mids capable of winning clearances but also working round the ground well, and I think McNeil fits this bill really well. I could see him going higher than this but I don’t he has any standout factors which could see him become a very good player. His pace is above average and his first few paces are quick, but he does not have line breaking pace, but he reads the play well which means he is several paces in front of his opponents. His inside work is quite good without being elite, he manages to get clearances and he can distribute the ball nicely from packs, he can also do the defensive things well like shepherd and tackle. His outside work is improving all the time, he finds a fair bit of it and his kicking has improved greatly, it is IMO also quite good without being great, he can hit most targets over 50m, and he generally has good direction on his kicking. He has good scope for improvement and at best I see him as being an important midfield contributor but never a top player, at worst I think he will not make it as he lacks an elite quality to make it AFL level. I did consider Robbie Hicks here and Hutchings as an inside mid.

Pick 78: Collingwood – Mark Hutchings
A tough inside mid who many rate higher than this but IMO he would be lucky to go in the national draft. He is slow and lacks any sort of agility or X factor, but he has reasonable endurance, which should see him get to contests. I see him as a similar player to Travis Tuck (don’t know if that is a good thing), in that he is an inside clearance winner, who has fantastic hands and can dish out the ball, but also he can lay a tackle and do the team oriented stuff. He will give 100% at all times, and reportedly has fantastic leadership skills, and you would know that he will give it his all to make it at AFL level. His kicking is reasonable over 40m and he will hit most short targets, yet 40m appears to be his max and if he looks to kick longer then he will miss a lot of targets. He should be able to play round 1 next year and provide a good tagging/clearance option, as he has played WAFL level reasonably well. I did consider Robbie Hicks here as a small forward, but Collingwood need inside mids.

Pick 83: Brisbane - Sam Harms
I think Brisbane would consider, a half forward type here who can kick goals and has a very nice kick, that player IMO is possibly Harms. He hasn’t got much press but clubs are probably interested in him and I see him as a backend choice in the draft. He is a half-forward in the mould of Tapscott, who can move into the midfield and win his own ball inside. He has a very good right foot, which can hit a target over 55m most of the time, although he can be inconsistent with his decision making. He is also a goal kicker and is a very accurate shot, be it as a set shot or on the run. The downside to him is his athleticism, he lacks the endurance ATM to move up the ground consistently although this should improve, and he only possess reasonable pace although he does have a nice side step I have noticed. For these reasons he does not rack up huge numbers, but rather he just has cameos, he is also quite powerful and can break the odd tackle. His overhead marking is strong, yet I don’t think this will be strength at AFL level. I did consider Robbie Hicks here, and they might consider a mature age player, but it is hard to know who is nominating.

Pick 84: Swans – Pass PSD
They will probably pass here to use a PSD pick to get Bradshaw.

6th Round

Pick 85: Richmond – Pass

Pick 86: Brisbane – Mitchell Thorp (Probably Pass PSD)
Don’t know where to put him probably need to edit him in!

Pick 87: Collingwood – Declan Bevan
Collingwood could use a KPF prospect that is a strong target and has the potential to be a dominant KPF. At the start of the year I rated him as a potential first rounder/early second rounder, now after a poor year he may not get drafted and GC have not even signed him up (don’t know why though). He is a strong powerful full-forward who is a good contested mark and is quite quick on the lead, not elite pace though, he may struggle against quick defenders. His kicking is quite good, he has a nice set shot routine, though his field kicking is average. He lacks defensive pressure and he really needs to build his endurance to get more of the ball, a bit lazy? Possibly? He is very much potential over performance this year, he struggled in TAC and the Champs with GC, but was better last year and U16, don’t know why? He could be on potential a very good FF, capable of 50+ goals a year as a focal point, yet there is a good chance he won’t make it, very risky. I strongly considered Serhat Temel here as well as a PSD pick, but Bevan is potentially better and athletically.
